Just collectively bargain this thing already. College Players Union needs to happen. The fact a deal is being considered with zero representation from the players is pretty crazy to me. If it hurts the players, it will likely lead to another type of response.
The old saying “Be careful what you wish for….” Is appropriate here.
The current situation is a joke.
Whatever comes out of the settlement will be a joke.
A unionized collective bargaining could be worse than both.
Those of us old enough to remember, remember the 1982 NFL season strike, the 1994 MLB strike, the 1987 NFL strike and a multitude of other strikes and lockouts that delayed starts of the seasons.
The 1994-1995 MLB strike almost killed MLB. It took a long time before fans started going to games in the numbers pre strike.
I have zero confidence the courts can fix this. About the same confidence it can be fixed legislatively, though that is probably the only real long term fix.
The biggest problem is the NCAA, if it had not been such a complete cluster Fvck of an institution, it could have solved this with participation of schools and players, but that ship has sailed. Now there are no adults involved in finding a solution.
College football needs a leader, a Pete Rozelle type not beholden to the schools or conferences. This is where legislation could probably help, but I don’t see it happening anytime soon. The conferences are greedy, the players are greedy and it’s all amateur hour right now.
