Va Tech to Hire GM first per Bruce Arians

They beat us too many times and took great pleasure in doing so.

I don’t want them to ever come back.
We might as well join the Mac with that mentality. I want to play good teams and I want to beat good teams.

Fundraising, sponsorships, ticket sales, facilities for all sports.

GM manages football operations and staff which is now about the same size as AD staff.
I get it...it just seems like these folks have organizational design way off.

If you think about, unless they carve away GM position entirely from AD, that role [GM] would/could be higher paid/more "powerful" than their boss [AD].

😬

I suppose that already exists in some Universities where Head Corch/AD is more "powerful" than University President (99.999% academic weak betas).

🤷‍♂️

So I guess he means a new GM and is throwing their current GM, Bruce Smith, under the bus. Sad way for them to do an alumni, locally grown dude, and NFL HOFer that's serving in that role

Not that he is anything more than Ed Reed was for Manny at Miami but still something they just announced in June and made a big deal about it

I think all of this **** is a joke.I’m starting to hate college ball much like I hate the NFL. I don’t want 20 good teams and 110 bad ones.

It's just another way to funnel money from one hand to another and take a lil bit off the top....

From what I recently read VT commits a very small amount to their football program as compared to the top six or seven teams in the ACC.
They had a meeting with the Board of Directors and basically said do we want to be competitive in football or not? If so, we need another, if I recall correctly, 150 million committed to the football program.

it's been speculated they would clean house, including the AD...

yes. I read that the original budget was around $144 million. The Board was told they needed $200 million to be competitive.
It was agreed to infuse an additional $50 million for 2026 to bring them up to around $190 mill, then up to $205 mill in 2027 and $216 Mill in 2028

They should have fired their AD years ago.

Still not a great look to do Bruce Smith like that. The best player in the history of their program.

Imagine the outrage here if someone came out publicly and said "We need a GM first" when Ed Reed was actively our "GM". Our fanbase would riot.

So they want a HC that’s ok with not having full control of the program? All while not having **** for NIL? Yea good luck.
