USC goes 7-5

It’s going to be a tasty reward for underachieving and fun match up in El Paso! Canes vs Trojans! Oh yeah, baby!!! Possible playoff preview for 2028!

He should have never left Oregon-
Had one good season with the Eagles then was abysmal in the NFL-
Terry Donahue and **** Vermeil were much better coaches at UCLA-
33-33 at UCLA-
He’s got resources at UCLA while it’s not perfect he should be better than that-
Maybe you’re right if he went to USC but, he’s no Pete Carroll that I can tell you.
If you followed ucla he walked into a dumpster fire left by Jim mora jr, and he has rebuilt it if chip wins next weekend it will be the 3rd straight 8 win year, and the program in better shape for long term success. I get chip ain’t a all-star recruiter but even if he was he can’t get certain kids into UCLA because of academic requirements. I will say chip ain’t Pete Carroll but he would have USC being a tough nose team with guys in the trenches and not soft. I wouldn’t be surprised if he works out on his own this off-season

Overreaction?

Nah-

He hasn’t won the big one he’s been embarrassed in most of them-

The Big 12 was weak as well-

Try telling that to his fan base at OU and now USC-

He’s a good OC I won’t deny that-

Win something already.
Only a few head coaches walking earth have “ won the big one”. Is that the bar to being good now? Natty or you suck?

Most disappointing team of the season by far, based on expectations going in.

Who would’ve thought USC and Miami might end up with the same record? Of course, I fully expect we will clown ourselves next week so we’ll be 6-6.

Jonnyblaze with the hot take to match! Aye!!!

Their recruiting hasn’t been that hot either

Riley seems to let his DC’s do what he wants because he may not know much about it. Sucks that they do not know much about defense either. Mario on the other hand seems to want his hands on his offense despite his lack of knowledge on how to run one. Sucks his OC seems to not know how to run one either

I’m usually on this side of the coin too, but when you have what is about to be THREE #1 overall picks as your QBs, and another 2nd rounder, along with a plethora of highly rated skill guys and you can’t even MAKE the natty game, you deserved to be looked at a lil funny …

He’s the one developing those qb’s. One being a former walk on. His offense also allows those wr’s to develop and put up huge numbers. Yes his defense is trash and he’ll never win a natty but he’s a good coach.

Agree. I think he is a good coach, that’s it. To go 7-5 with Caleb Williams and all the NIL money they just utilized on portal kids is criminal though. I don’t think it will get any easier for them going forward with the conference switch.

He wasnt even that good at Oklaoma, dude got by on name recognition and the usual hype
Whenever I think our fans can't be any more ignorant, someone comes along and limbos right under the bar. You can argue that Lincoln Riley's inability to grasp complimentary football(As is the case with most of the Mike Leach coaching tree) limits his ability to win titles, but you can't look at the dude's record and conclude that "He wasn't even that good at OU".

At OU, Riley went 55-10, with his worst season being a 9-2 season. This year will be first year where he didn't win 9 or more games. He finished in the Top 10 EVERY SINGLE YEAR HE WAS AT OU. Let that marinate. 5 years, 5 Top 10 finishes with two Top 5 finishes. You can argue that he feasted on a weak Big XII, but considering that a lot of coaches run up great records beating on programs that are down, or struggling, that's a weak argument. Dude is legit, the issue is whether he finally realizes that you can't compete for titles, by depending solely on offense.

Let's be honest, if you keep knocking on the door, you're more likely to break through. Riley is one of those guys that has consistently been knocking on the door, dude is young, there's a good chance he breaks through. This is something I've noticed in college football circles: People are extremely myopic and think that Nick Saban just showed up one day and started winning titles. It took him years to get there, the difference between someone like Nick and a guy like Lincoln is that Lincoln didn't get to cut his HC teeth at a Michigan State, dude came in at OU and started winning off the bat.

I think there’s a connection with his offense and the defensive issues. I don’t think he’ll ever get over the hump. Even though bough he’s been at the door step a few times I never really believed it would happen. Their medicine was coming. You must be legit in both trenches to win. That’s the one reason I was ok with Mario.

People forget that winning a National Championship is usually luck, mixed in with coaching ability. People forget that there are tons of mediocre to lousy coaches that have a title, mostly because of something happening for them. Ed Orgeron, Gene Chizik, Jimbo Fisher, Larry Coker, Les Miles, the list goes on of average(Fisher/Miles) to bad(Orgeron, Chizik and Coker)coaches that have won titles. Keep in mind, Larry Coker and Gene Chizik have more titles than Mark Richt, and just as many as Mack Brown.

If you can hit on a generational talent at QB(Chizik/Fisher) or be the beneficiary of a loaded roster that required minimal oversight(Coker/Orgeron), you can win one.

I noted in a previous post on this thread that Lincoln has the same problem most of the Leach Coaching Tree has, they don't understand complimentary football. This is why despite his brilliance, I was never sold on Leach being a guy that could win if given legit resources. You have to stop someone EVENTUALLY, you have to be able to salt games away with a strong running game, and Leach disciples don't believe in either one of those concepts. The Air Raid was invented as a matter of necessity, it is a way for a less talented team to keep pace with teams that are bigger, stronger and faster. The issue is that a lot of things that make the Air Raid and its offshoots unstoppable are also the same factors that make it an issue in big games.
