US News 2017 rankings are out....

Hey being a top 40's institution and # 1 in Florida is a huge selling points to parents and recruits that value their education. Throw in the small class sizes and this is another tool in Coach Mark Richt's toolbox.

Go Canes

Apparently so is excellent criminal defense team that keeps your rapist child out of misprision and on the field. Remember that RB's mom who was so happy how Jimbo protected Winston? Starting with JJ, our graduation rate has been outstanding. While Bobby was in teens, JJ was over 50. Our players have always graduated well without any recognition. I hear kids talk that stuff and then go to trash school anyway. I have UM degree. It's value when way up after that first NC and climbed through roof for years after. It's value has plummeted since Donna got her fat little fingers on it. Enrollment, like fans, come with winning, being the hot team, the in place. Without enrollment, a university is nothing. I would trade 30 places on the US News ranking for one more NC.

An alum would know that the value of the degree shot up even further under Dr. Shalala, and they would also know that while having kids apply is important, it's the QUALITY of applicant that makes for a competitive institution. Even when Miami isn't winning on the field, elite students are applying, Miami is turning away kids today, that 10-15 years ago would have been actively recruited to attend the institution. National titles are great, but I can't put that on my resume.

I disagree. As an alum from Sun Tan U, it was those titles that got the notice and it was not necessary to put them on the resume. That is the exact point. The [[__]] said it all. The constant ridiculous increases in the amount of money the government allows on student loan has more to do with high priced colleges increased enrollment than Donna. Her claim to fame was acquisitions of hospitals. I started doing M&A for a living in 1977 and now do it one of 15 largest companies in the world. The prices she paid for the beds she bought were beyond any reasonable ratios and could well be the financial ruin of Miami.

You have a point of view that what goes in matters the most. So "elite" applicants are heavily waited in your opinion. That is the basis of an elitist mindset. I put weight on what comes out, the results matter. Therefore I judge the value of my degree by the reaction of the people is come across. I work in results world where elitist do not care to enter. In your world Donna might have increased the value of your degree. In my world she lowered it.

Outside of the money making healthy system and now the athletic program finally (kind of sort of) the management is obviously horrendous by any single metric you want to pick.

EDIT: Being behind Michigan state is embarrassing lol

As a 2023 grad and now current grad student the answer is simple. The tuition attracts rich kids that want to party hard (and somewhat study). I only went to UMiami because of a merit-scholarship I received, otherwise I would be in TrailerHassee or Gainesville. The school would rather accept the rich kid with no chance of a scholarship or international student (cannot receive aid) over a hardworking student imo -- and even still because of the school's location, the acceptance rate is HILARIOUSLY low for being #67th.

Our fans don’t realize that the USNWR rankings are easily gamed and the criteria has directly affected private schools like Miami. When affordability is a consideration for an academic ranking, that’s all you need to know.

Don’t get me wrong, Dr. Frenk is a mediocre leader and should be gone ASAP, but this ranking isn’t the end all be all our fans think it is. There’s no way Miami dropped that far in less than 8 years. Something more is at play.

It’s a private school, of course it’s expensive. The issue is that as the tuition goes up, and it becomes more competitive to get in, merit aid is tougher to come by. I was a Foote fellow, my stats wouldn’t get that today, and that was 20 years ago. I would barely get a half ride today, which means that odds are, I would have not attended the institution, had that been the case then.

The issue is that Frenk isn’t the fundraiser Donna was, and it’s tougher to justify spending 250k on an undergraduate education when you aren’t at an Ivy or near Ivy.

Is there another ranking system that ignores the cost and/or demographics? I believe I read somewhere that schools with more 'diverse' student body score higher.

frenk sucks, however, the metrics have been gotten worse under him in the other rankings as well not just the US News one. theyre gonna need Saudi money soon if they want to continue charging what they do for what is now a lower ranked school when it shouldn't ever be that low. the system is gamed but thats on frenk as president to do so. whether or not we like the rankings and their criteria, its a metric a lot of HS and parents use when determingin where to send their kid. the education is still better than FSU and I believe on par with UF but at that price tag, its not that much better.

This is correct. Tulane in the 70's is a joke.

The rankings of the first 20 schools seem relatively reasonable. After that, the cost of tuition seems to be too heavily weighted. LOL at Rutgers ranked ahead of NYU.

UM should also be ranked much higher…and be the the #1 ranked school in Florida.
