Upon Further Review- Florida State

Five Stars
  • D’Eriq King- This guy is the savior of the program. Not just in his ability on the field, but his leadership as well. Focused, driven, ready. Just like the team.
  • Zion Nelson- On most plays, I had to watch it multiple times just to see what number was going against him. He was dominant and didn’t allow a defender to even pressure King on this night by my count.
  • Bubba Bolden- Tackles, interception, tipped pass leading to an interception. This kid is playing like a legitimate All-American
  • Gilbert Frierson- I highlighted his leadership and communication in this game and I believe this was the best game he has played as a Cane.
  • Quincy Roche- Consistently won off the edge and I’m pretty sure he made their LT cry at one point.
5A. DJ Ivey- What a performance against a WR who is supposedly a draft prospect. Not only did he lock him down in this one, he made him opt out of the rest of the season (career?). Nice job, kid. I honestly believe in you.

Lowlights
  • Two ejections, one which carries over into the Clemson game (Gurvan Hall first half). Florida State was dirty in this game, grabbing anything they could, leading with the crown of their helmets, facemasks, choke holds, talking ish. But, with all that said, you have to hold your water and not get ejected.
  • Penalties. There were entirely too many penalties in this game and they will cause a loss against a team with a pulse.
  • Jennings/McCloud really struggled to defend the flats and it’s the only place FSU was able to attack and score. When the coaching staff scripted plays, their method of attack was at the LB’s. Hoping for more improvement as the season goes along.
Overall
This game was exactly what needed to happen. An inferior opponent came into Miami’s home and the Hurricanes played a focused game that eliminated any doubt immediately. I don’t remember the last time Miami scored TD’s on every drive in the first half, and the only reason they were stopped on the last drive is because the clock ran out.

Great writeup and agree on your 5 stars. We are lucky to have King.

As for the LBs, how do we hide that weakness against Clemson - who has 2 guys in their backfield (lawrence and Eitenne) who can outrun our front 7? Do we play Brooks more?

Ivey with a very good game against FSpoo (again). For now, he has shut me up. Hopefully he maintains that level of play and concentration throughout the season.

Zion also looked really impressive at LT. Campbell looked solid this season at LT, but also looked good at guard last season. Maybe put Zion at LT and Campbell at LG if he's healthy?

I'm honestly shocked about Nelson. The kid was literally the worst lineman in the ACC last season. And he doesn't get beaten once.

I think we can safely put to rest the discussion on whether it's talent vs. development that matters. Nelson is exhibit A that you need the raw materials, but that a bad coach can totally derail a kid's performance and a good coach can mask all the weaknesses until the player is fully developed. Kudos to Zion! Kudos to Justice!

Who knows, maybe Donaldson will turn out to be the guy we always thought he could once he comes back and buys into Justice' coaching approach. And we've got Rivers and Walker in the oven baking right now. Good things are on there way for this OL!

OL is the biggest surprise on the team and a welcome one at that. How many years have we just been hoping for merely AVERAGE play from that unit only to be disappointed when it sinks our whole offense? To finally have competency there is a huge relief.

Just a tidbit, don't know if it has been mentioned here but I know it wasn't mentioned on tv but Harvey actually caused a fumble on fsu's first drive by the goal line when they tried to do a QB draw with Travis. The ball hit the ground and Travis quickly recovered it while falling down. Just something small because I don't think it shows up on his stats. Bolden hit Travis at the same time as well.

Yes the LB particularly Mccloud has been very disappointing to me so far. Like they are thinking instead of attacking. Diaz needs to keep shuffling the combinations in there. It's also great to see Frierson stepping up, he is one of the most athletic players we have. Clemson is gonna challenge our eyes and our DTs will have to have a tremendous game to give us a chance against their offense.

I missed it.

Love the mention (and picture) of Cam's pass protection.

I had screenshot'd it and was going to start a thread on it. Figured you'd catch it.

We'll need it bigtime against Clemson.

Cam's really preparing a nice portfolio to present to NFL scouts. He's got about 8-9 more games to complete the presentation.

I think fans are reading to much into the Zion played well thing and Garin justice being such a good offensive line coach. It’s the scheme ie getting the ball out quick getting in formations that are advantageous To offset our developing offensive line. And these are some of things Enos could have done but didn’t. I’m not saying Zion isn’t getting better or Garin Justice isn’t a good coach but how scheme can hide some poor play of front and it doesn’t hurt to have DERIQ KING.

The scheme and tempo absolutely help the OL, as does having a QB who gets the ball out of his hands faster. But Zion looks more physically impressive than he did last season, and his play was definitely better against fspoo than any team we saw last year.

Very detailed but a few things to point out. Nesta was not beating Lucas on the Phillips pick. Also Fsu was not jump setting Roche on the TFL. Its a run play.

@Lance Roffers had a question on the play where Harley dropped/defender swiped the ball out on a deep crosser coming from left to right. It seemed like Pope was coming open on a streak from the right side. Do you think King could have taken a shot there or is it just a case of pope looking open because the safety released pope to make a play on the pass? Thanks

Man, this is rapidly becoming my favorite part of CIS. Always spot on.

I would like to say that through three games I'm pleasantly surprised by more than a few players. The offensive line has been a pleasure. I can't believe the improvement at the tackle position. Campbell looked like a completely different player in the first two games, then he gets hurt and Nelson summons his inner Mount McKinnie. Yes the scheme, play calling and King's magic help a lot but these guys are just fundamentally lightyears better than last season. How many times did a defensive end just blow by Nelson before he even got out of his stance last year? No offensive system in the world could hide that. The interior of the line is solid but not spectacular. Scaife and Gaynor are limited athletically. What you see is what you're going to get from them. Not bad just not special.

On defense, our corners are not nearly as bad as we might have originally thought. Blades and Ivey are both physical and if they can let them play with inside leverage more often, especially on the field side, they can be quite effective. Make a receiver have to fight through the corner on in-breaking patterns. Use the sidelines as a defender and force the QB to be accurate downfield.

Frierson has been impressive also. For a guy I didn't have high expectations for at the beginning of the season, he's looked really good. He's an upgrade in coverage over Romeo Finley and has tackled well. You like to see him take command pre snap and put guys in position. It shows he's been studying and knows the defense well, especially for a first year starter. It's a shame our veterans at linebacker aren't nearly as savvy. If they jsut played their assignments against the run, it would be adequate. We don't need them to make monster plays, just fill the hole you're supposed to fill and make the tackle. FSU's scripted opening drive hit all the right buttons on how to take advantage of those guys and we'll continue to see that stuff all year until they prove they can be fundamentally sound and not bite on the window dressing chasing the big tackle for loss. We desperately miss Shaq.

Romeo was so underrated for us. Agree with you on just about everything, and Gil has been great....just don't disparage my man Romeo. I thought he did a great job last year.

I saw with my own eyes the FSU LT try to jump set on Roche expecting him to go that direction. You are free to see it differently.

Nesta beat Lucas plenty in this game, but yes on that play it was #53 he beat.

I’m often asked why I spend hours and hours on these and this response is why. People read these and a certain percentage CANNOT WAIT to find something to gotcha on. I don’t like Lucas aNd the way he acted towards Miami, so mostly I was just having fun with him.

That said, I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.
