UPDATED: Mark Matthews commits to TAMU

D$ said multiple times that we were the high bidder. Not sure why anyone would doubt that since that actually makes it worse

Also, Elko is a much better coach than Fisher. Not sure that they will have the same problem developing their current 5 stars so I’m not consoling myself with that.

The comment about us having our left tackle on the roster already for the next few years has merit. We actually have a bunch of young studs on the Oline so from that standpoint, I’m not stressing this loss.

All that said, we have a very good coach and staff that are developing our guys and building the roster and culture the right way.

At this point, I would spend all our money on the Dline.

But when they said Francis and Samson were scaring players away, no one believed it. I wouldn't really worry about the OL but the optics are bad and worse than losing the RB.

If we are paying, he is local, best OL coach and HC combo in the country, 2 tackles just drafted in the top rounds. He has to had fell in love with that cow pasture. Top it off we just ended their season on their own field.

If I had to guess, seems like they are probably selling the whole OL as a unit. Really the only thing that makes sense. It can be hard to admit sometimes you might jive with a coach better.

I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say Mario has built a ton of equity in player development, culture and now winning here. But his personality isn’t going to be a right fit for everyone.

Sucks, unfortunate reality is we aren’t going to land every single kid. Him visiting a ton early and not committing always had me a bit leery but I figured Mario would win out. I’d bet more often than not on Mario landing the guys he wants, especially on the OL.

If you genuinely think Mario is going to just fall apart in the recruiting department you need to reevaluate your brain and go touch some grass. The world ain’t ending.
Probably selling the Miami model. Get bullies and bully everyone.

As soon as y’all come to grips with the fact that a highly rated South Florida player’s first choice is to leave South Florida, the easier this will become for you.

This recruitment should crystallize that.

Thank god we are back to being a national brand and Mario recruits as such.

Keep the SoFla dogs that WANT to be Canes and let the rest walk.

Losing out on the local 5 star is tough, but I'd glady take a guy like Olu, who's 6'6 295 with twittch & athleticism and a really high ceiling.

You never know what these kids are thinking on these visits. You get a bunch of kids on campus at the same time and the visits become a runaway experience.

It’s genuinely the only reason I can see, outside he flatly doesn’t want to play for Mario. Money, success, pro potential and location. They all literally trump TAMU in our favor. So it’s literally either the coach, or the guys on the team currently and in the future.

It's not a money issue. We were ready to pay Matthews top of the market.

It wasn't effort. We recruited him forever as the top priority.

I don't think Cristobal and Mirabal forgot how to recruit offensive tackles, especially after watching Cantwell toss people all spring.

I also don't think it's about playing time. We play freshmen, and even if Matthews played RT (which he does in high school) he could still go Top 10 like Mauigoa and Fano.

So all that leads me to this conclusion: I think the kid just wants to go to Texas A&M. I don't understand it, but I'm not him. These guys are all different. Texas A&M did a better job recruiting him and looks like they'll win this battle. It's a brutal loss for the Canes.

All we can do is take the L and move forward. Consider it the recruiting version of the SMU game. Focus on Olu Olubobola and get it done. Elite offensive tackles are rare, and there is a big drop off to the next group (as we see in the first round of the NFL Draft). This needs to be a position where we continue to spend money on high school talent. Maybe we can flip Matthews back, but that's becoming less common in this era.

I still think we land a Top 5 class. But I also thought we'd get Matthews. So let's see what happens. We've got seven months. Go Canes.
I’m not going to cry over a south Florida OL recruit. Its not like losing J. Smith. I’d be surprised if he’s a day one starter, but I wish him well.

@DMoney forget about Matthews specifically…why is Mario losing so many highly rated local guys each year? Why hasn’t he been able to recruit at an elite level even after seeing steady on-field success, particularly after a title game appearance? Don’t pump sunshine please!

Agree. The optics certainly suck

Miami is not for everybody but A&M? That city sucks. It’s in the middle of nowhere, there is nothing interesting to see, the bar scene is a small strip of beat up chicken and bbq joints and there is absolutely no female talent.

As far as the stadium, sure, the 100k erupt periodically but they are not screaming the entire game. I actually find it pretty tame, plus they pipe in extra noise… ridiculous!

Their pregame tailgating is nice though.
