Updated defensive rankings

Simpson came in and DL hasn't skipped a beat. If anything, they've gotten better but that could just be GW3 being the monster he is and JJ/Garvin taking the next step.

Either way, great sign that it's more the scheme and not the actual coach. If any other coach leaves similar to Kool then gives hope that there won't be much of a drop off.
Here's what i've been saying, when people for some reason kept anointing coach kool as the "best d-line coach" i never thought that, in the 2 years that he was here, our run defense against the better competition was **** poor with the exception of the notre shame game. Coack kool is good t teaching how to pass rush, but run stopping is what makes a defense more dominant, it wasnt coach diaz defensive calls it was the d-line giving up to much **** in the run game.

Now this year, we stopping the run much better, and everything else is falling into place, coach richt wasnt happy with the run defense nor coach kool's recruiting ability.

We are looking really good for sure and having those stats is nice, but we also haven't played the most explosive offenses in the country.

@Dwinstitles I love Silvera but the level Willis is playing at is beyond insane. You think Silvera has the same type of ability or is he a different type of DT in terms of style? TBH I don't know enough about Silvera's game to answer that.
Nah Willis coming out is a better prospect he was a 5 star for a reason, I would like us to go out and get those types of kids at DT instead of settling. Some flame out but u have to get those Willis types..........Silvera is a dog though lets not mistake that.....kid is a gamer man and has all the tools to be great.

Definitely going to be different in 2019 with Willis off to the NFL. But I believe in Coach Simpson’s teachings and think Silvera will be ready to take over in his absence. Simpson has these guys playing at an elite level - across the DL. They’re stuffing the run AND killing it on passing downs. During Coach Kul’s tenure, we were just ok at run defense. I think having a former NFL guy in Simpson is really helping develop the DL and recruits are taking notice with the quickness. We should be able to close on top talent for the foreseeable future. Question - I wonder if Coach Simpson is being groomed to take Manny’s spot if he ever leaves?

Someone will step up, just like how people cried and said the season would be disastrous because mcintosh and Norton left , Willis stepped up and exceeded the play of what both McIntosh and Norton could have provided. It will be a new season and the production will get replaced especially playing in this agressive scheme

I will say all the get rid of Manny, Diaz is corch talk seems quite unwarranted considering these stats.
It was always so freaking dumb. Literally if you bagged on Diaz much there wasn't much sanity in your brain. He consistently has this D getting better. It was better his first year then it had been in years . It was better last year then year 1 and this year it is way better then last season. All you can ask.

And most importantly - It attacks . At Miami you play attacking defense . None of this crap D-no tried with Golden.l

We already DE U, if we get Joe to stay holy fook..........Cam Williams, Harvey, Rousseau, Garvin, JoeJack, Weaver, Patchan, Joyner (if they stick him there) Bruh
Dont forget that we might snag bogle and Ingraham, which if we due we definitely need to move joyner back to LB

I would love for Joe to stay but I’ve been told by someone that’s good friends with him that his words were this is his last year. Obviously that can all change because of his nfl stock but he really doesn’t want to come back for his senior year.

Forgot Bogle one of my favorite prospects this cycle, him Neal and Stevenson and Keontra (think thats how u spell it)

Simpson is important, but don't discount having Willis sitting next to Silva teaching. That senior leadership, helping underclass man along, is critical to success. It is a part of the secret sauce we have been missing for years. Our D-Line will be much better in 2019, 2020 because of players like Willis. Its one thing to coach a guy. Its another to have him playing along side the best. Silva gets to watch the best at work. Pick his brain, get tips on how to get better. There is no better school then playing with the best at a position.

we need to give coach diaz a big fat raise and make him HC in waiting. We can't afford to lose him. The guy just gets the players from here.

I know these stats has you dropping your drawers @Dwinstitles!

Please note: I am not concerned with comparing us to others, especially at this juncture, I am just concerned with the actual accurate numbers.

If you look at ONLY ACC play (yes this is a small sample size for 2018), here is where we stand against prior years:

2016 (averages): Defense

Points Allowed: 21.75 (This includes the 7 points on the STs TD against Pitt, the 100 Yard Return) [Actual Points Allowed is 20.875]
Yards Allowed: 397.75
Turnovers: 1.5
Sacks: 2.5
Tackles for Loss: 6.75

2017 (averages): Defense

Points Allowed: 18.75 (This includes the 7 points on the STs onside kick flop against GT) [Actual Points Allowed is 17.875]
Yards Allowed: 368.25
Turnovers: 2.75
Sacks: 3.75
Tackles for Loss: 8.75

----- (Through UNC and FSU)

2018 (averages): Defense

Points Allowed: 18.5 (This includes the 7 points ST allowed on a Punt Return against FSU) [Actual Points Allowed is 15.0]
Yards Allowed: 264.5
Turnovers: 4.0
Sacks: 4.5
Tackles for Loss: 13.0

Our D is devastating to offenses. However we need to work on scoring D a bit. Some of that goes to offensive efficiency, punting, and punt coverage. Clean that up and we are the best D in CFB.
Yep. It's special teams play giving up good field position
