Update on David Stone-he is staying at Oklahoma

Absolutely am aware of that. Mentioned Lyle as one obvious candidate that a certain big-time school was after. But that certainly does not equate to the list I mentioned above. Carson Beck got paid, sure. We had to have it at the time. But everyone else? I mean idk…seems like Mario was talking out of both sides of his mouth when he said we don’t re-negotiate.

Because I know we do, and we have been.

O’Connor probably got some money, but not some massive deal. Lucas sure. That’s three. Blay I can’t imagine got a ton.

Who else are we upping that proved their worth last season? Or was it out of desperation?

If you’re blindly upping 4 and 5-star players that haven’t played yet, well then I personally think that’s very foolish and completely against the train of thought that we need more instant-impact guys. That’s reactive behavior, not proactive.
Don’t know what you’re talking about regarding Mario talking out of both sides of his mouth. He clearly stated that if you sit out for spring for the only purpose of trying to get a new deal then you’re gone.

Did anyone do what Nico did?

Have to think there are some conversations about Samson given where he stands in the rotation vs how much he’s being paid.

He’s not saying if we bring in Stone it risk other DTs transferring. He’s saying there’s other projected starters irrespective of DT that are getting bigger offers from other schools and we need to decide whether to match those offers or look for cheaper replacements in the portal.

Once that’s done and they address the other priorities there may not be enough to get Stone

Agreed. People think it’s easy to just “go get them, no matter what.” Doesn’t work that way. Miami has certainly shown their willingness spend big money, but resources aren’t unlimited.

Good strategy by other schools bidding up our current roster . Squeezes our budget for the portal
I mentioned in the Jackson Cantwell thread I think some schools might be “interested” in only increasing what another school has to spend. While no salary cap, there’s limits to what each school can do, and schools are going to start using that strategy.

Interesting thought.

I personally love David Stone and Trebor Pena. They are impact guys in my book. But this is like NFL free agency and there are a lot of factors at play, not all of which can be reported.

Retention is a huge part of this process that we don’t talk about, but it is creating some tough decisions.
Aggressive bidding from other schools?? It is reported by the college football world that it is Miami and only Miami doing this.😜

Interesting. I could see this alluding to a couple things:
  • Does bringing in a player like Stone to Miami at this point make another member of the team hit the portal?
  • Does the bag Stone requires force Miami to take away from the bags of others on the team which could or could not have them leave?
I'm sure teams are hitting up existing players immediately after a big transfer portal is announced for that team. Message: "look what they think about you, they had to bring in another player. come on over here and get the flowers you deserve"

I think about that a lot. It’s really on the players and his agent to really verify the legitimacy of offers before steering the kid into the portal only to get caught with your pants down like Nico did.

And I wonder if the agents lie and say this team is offering 40% more just to bluff Miami to spend more. Lots of games being played with no rules on how to play lol.

But that’s why Mario gets paid the big bucks.

It came down to uga and Miami for O’Connor you best believe he got paid well. Poyser was the 2 safety in the portal and picked miami over lsu, uf, auburn, uga. You best believe he got a bag. Blay was highly ranked and a top 5 DT in the portal he definitely got paid. We know beck got taken care of.

I’m sure teams were on Bain especially after last year defense. So probably had to throw Bain some extra bread. Probably had to up oj bag. Sure francis got some calls as well as jojo after not playing much last year

what did I miss on the lyle transfer stuff?

The more you win the more money comes in. Spend what you need to build this team. You win the acc and get in the playoffs and make a run that money will come back
Cue the scared money don’t make money Billy Napier GIF 🤣🤣🤣

did he really? I didnt see everyone badmouth him yet
I’m just referencing a few of the posts mentioning him, so I don’t think it’s anything more than the other discussions that you have to constantly recruit your own as others will be coming for them…

But we were also rumored to not spend toward an RB1 in fear he’d leave

I’m ready for him to live up to the hype and ball out
