Update on David Stone-he is staying at Oklahoma

Pena isnt an impact wr. He is a by product of an offense that threw the football a lot. Just dive deep into his numbers he is a volume player. Dude had 84 catches and only 900 yards. That shows he wasn’t making many big plays.

Longest play on the year was 50 yards. Only 2 100 yard games 1 vs stanford where he had 101 and to no surprise the best game of his career vs miami with 128. Only 9 plays of 25+ yards. Only 20 plays of 15+ yards.

He could help as a possession guy in the slot but I don’t see impact

You can either grab a depth piece or you can grab a stone/watson and probably expect 1 DT to leave (id guess moten).

Staff has to decide if they want an upgrade or if they want depth.

With everything at stake in terms of conference realignment and the literal future of the program riding on getting into the P2, now is not the time to go cheap. Do what we have to do to bring in impact players. Stone is a multi year guy at a position we have been terrible at fielding impact talent at. This should be exactly the kind of guy we open the check book for. No excuses.
I did not follow his first year at OU and whether he played or had any impact at all, but I completely agree unless he was just a bust. This is that position we have not recruited at the highest level…not sure how many opportunities there are.

I’m a bit confused by the retention aspect that’s apparently a big block.

We just lost Cam Ward, Martinez, Barrow, Restrepo, George, Brown, Arroyo, Baron and Powell. Patterson was on a nice NIL deal, so was Carr. Same with both Horton’s. Even Riley Williams and Rudolph were getting some $$$.

We signed like 2-3 guys in the winter portal worth considerable $. We upped Jordan Lyle’s bag so that he wouldn’t transfer. The HS class sure as heck doesn’t reflect a top tier NIL allocation, because remember - we were told that we were going to spend on portal guys instead, since they were more proven commodities. Absolutely fine take to have at the time, in fact I’m for it.

So the question is - are we penny pinching, are we waiting for someone or a few guys to enter, or who the heck did we overpay for very very badly?
Players that would melt the board if we lost them.

We aren’t the only ones pushing and spending to get better.

How much longer is the portal open? There haven’t been any offense changing WRs enter the portal this cycle and I doubt one will. If they don’t have a true WR1 tampered with, why be stubborn? Pena is the best guy out there and I wouldn’t classify him as WR1. Good player but there are levels.

Hopefully we can land him and he can be an impact. Blay, Scott, and Stone is a talented DT trio but obviously needs to put it all together.

Absolutely am aware of that. Mentioned Lyle as one obvious candidate that a certain big-time school was after. But that certainly does not equate to the list I mentioned above. Carson Beck got paid, sure. We had to have it at the time. But everyone else? I mean idk…seems like Mario was talking out of both sides of his mouth when he said we don’t re-negotiate.

Because I know we do, and we have been.

O’Connor probably got some money, but not some massive deal. Lucas sure. That’s three. Blay I can’t imagine got a ton.

Who else are we upping that proved their worth last season? Or was it out of desperation?

If you’re blindly upping 4 and 5-star players that haven’t played yet, well then I personally think that’s very foolish and completely against the train of thought that we need more instant-impact guys. That’s reactive behavior, not proactive.
Most people realized he was shooting blanks the minute it came out of his mouth... the usual suspects ran with it like always

Every thread we are rich and poor at the same time...

Jordan Lyle better be a legit P2 RB1 THIS YEAR.... let's hope he is...

Coaching can make several position archetypes better. If the new DC is the goods I say save the money on high priced LB's and safeties and allocate it towards Stone.

You cannot teach trench warfare. The position is tied to traits and talent. The position also takes a year or two to adjust to on this level. Getting Stone would be like acquiring a Porche used a year after the driver barely put any miles on it....but had to eat the initial depreciation of a lost year right off the bat.

You go all in for OL, DL, and QB's when the rare opportunity arises to get difference makers there. I sincerely hope the staff makes him the top priority once our own guys are squared away.

THE PORTAL IS ALWAYS OPEN!!!!

Wonder who they would worry about leaving if they picked up Stone...
He’s not saying if we bring in Stone it risk other DTs transferring. He’s saying there’s other projected starters irrespective of DT that are getting bigger offers from other schools and we need to decide whether to match those offers or look for cheaper replacements in the portal.

Once that’s done and they address the other priorities there may not be enough to get Stone
