Once again NCAA shows its ineptitude.

Benihana dinners from a booster gets us 2 year bowl ban...

Meanwhile UNC skates from fake academia.

College athletics needs a new governing body big time.

Don't understand why people don't get it.

There's an accreditation board that determines the validity of courses provided by a school. These courses were provided for and attended by the general student body, not just athletes. End of story.

We got GaTech coming up and we're sitting here worrying about another school, in another sport. Must be a millennial thing to be this pathetic. Our cloud has already passed over. Move on man.

This ruling is a disaster not just bc UNC skates, but because it sets a precedent that as long as fake classes are offered to ALL students then it is not an improper benefit and therefore not a violation.

Nationally, this is a big story. The NCaa has signed their death warrant.

As of Friday, there’s no reason for any athlete to be called a “student-athlete” anymore. They’re just athletes, because the NCAA is powerless to enforce the other half of its beloved phrase. And as if it just couldn’t resist applying a coda to highlight this, the NCAA ruled N.C. State freshman Braxton Beverly ineligible for having the temerity to attend a summer school class at Ohio State, the kind of capricious nonsense at which the NCAA excels.....

“Sometimes the behavior you’re not proud of doesn’t fit into a bylaw,” North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said, which is also serves as a reminder that even though the NCAA didn't sanction North Carolina, this scandal will remain an embarrassing and shameful stain on a proud university's reputation. No amount of gloating over a legal victory against the NCAA will change what happened.

Oooh! Their reputation took a hit! Oh noes!!!!

The N.C.A.A. on Friday announced that it “could not conclude that the University of North Carolina violated N.C.A.A. academic rules” in what is widely considered the worst academic scandal in college sports history.

The dingle berry up thread trying to get us to move on can suck a nut. The cheating happened over 20 years! But UNC skates. They tried to bury UM with made up stories from a convicted felon, got caught trying to lie in their own investigation and let UM self-impose their own sanctions. If this doesn't bother you, then you're most likely an UNC troll trying to fight a PR battle on forums.
How anyone who claims to be a UM fan can gloss over this is beyond me.

The bottom line is, as always, the NCAA is only concerned with things that threaten its revenue model. They don't care about academics or even children being molested. They care about somebody buying a kid a hamburger because it's an "improper benefit" and only the NCAA gets to decide what a proper benefit is. They trot out that old trope of "the kids are getting the benefit of an education in exchange for playing sports" yet when it becomes obvious that kids leave college still functionally illiterate because they had tutors taking classes for them, it kinda makes you wonder why the DOJ hasn't charged universities and the NCAA with defrauding student athletes. Students receive a scholarship with the expectation they will get a quality university education, but when the university sets up a tutoring system that is built on making sure kids can be at practice rather than class, then the students were not given what they were entitled to under the terms of the scholarship. The charges in the Adidas scandal can cut both ways.

You're right, how could I be entertaining this stupid thread when I've got so much important work to do to make sure the team is successful this weekend.

Must be a boomer thing to be so sanctimonious.

DING DING DING! We have a winner! The NCAA could not give a third of a **** about "student" athletes' academics. The whole system is a charade to try to convince the public that the athletes are students, just like anyone else thus they don't deserve a cut of the huge money pie that the universities rake in. Rampant criminal activity and/or rampant academic scandal result in only a minor slap on the wrist if anything at all. Meanwhile, if you by an athlete some drinks at the club, your school will face the death penalty.

Nice write up of everything wrong in this situation, but good luck getting UNC donors to abandon their school or the D1 College Presidents to leave the NCAA because they hold "Academic Integrity" sacrosanct...Like Harveywood, the all mighty $$$$$$ rules.

This case highlights how easily a billionaire booster could take a relatively smaller populated D1 school like Miami and quickly buy championships; the key is EVERY undergrad student gets the 50K a year, Nice car, housing...For about $2 million a year, it would be a breeze and the NCAA couldn't do squat because ALL the students are getting the benefits...

Carolina just gave everyone the blueprint for keeping athletes eligible....easy free classes as long as regular students get to take as well

yea this will be a great way for regular students to pick up spending money cause you will have universities paying them to sit in on these classes to make them " legit"..
