UNC extends Mack Brown

Ol' Mack was never nearly as bad a coach as he seemed/was portrayed in Austin at the end but if you're expecting UNC to make the jump from an 8 win type team under him then I'm afraid I've gots some bad news.

Btw, anyone see UNC hoops lose by 80 pts to Wisky? Good times!

You don’t think the current power at Miami, who is 5x champion and held arguably the most dominating dynasty in CF history, has the same standards? When Díaz wins 8 games with this team and soft schedule, they will extend him, as well.

I pray that that's NOT true.....but given our past recent history that's the kind of BS we'll do

Mack is riding the coattails of an excellent QB. Once Howell leaves, I think that program will lose a major step.

Not so fast, my friend. They have been recruiting very well at QB, including Drake Maye in this past class, who was the #55 overall player in the country according to the composite. Huge get for them. I am pretty sure he's on campus already. They also recruited another 4-star dual-threat kid in the previous class.

Both of these kids will be surrounded by better talent than Howell was too.

@JBCanes-NC saw this thread and texted me "15-0"

Good points. But Howell is a likely 1st round pick. 1st round picks at QB are a rarity, even among 4 and 5 star QBs. Unless you get lucky like Oklahoma (Mayfield, Murray), the odds are that none of the QBs on that roster will compete at Howell's level. Plus, Mack is 69. Age isn't in his favor. And you could see coaches on their staff get poached, particularly if they continue some success. I don't know much about Longo, but I have to imagine he will start to get some looks for a HC job based on how well that offense has played under his watch.

For the mopes in this thread, we are talking about UNC football. Their realistic goal is not to win NC's, its to be competitive and to win more than their share of games, which they have done.

Mack is a great CEO for them- he has energized their fan base, engaged their boosters in a major way, dramatically upgraded the talent on the football team, etc. He has embarrassed his biggest competitor in the Coastal in back to back years and gave Clemson a battle.

And if they get rid of Mack, who would they get?

Totally agree.

Mack Brown is to UNC what Canes fans expect Jim Larranaga to be at UM.

Depends if there is an NFL quarterback presently or set to succeed Howell in 2022.

At Texas, Mack had Colt McCoy in the stable. Colt beat out the intended replacement Jevon Snead after Vince Young went to the NFL. That gave Mack five years of NFL-level quarterbacking for the Longhorns, and it showed as they lost 9 games in between 2004 and 2009 (one season undefeated, and two seasons only one loss). After Colt departed, the Longhorns never had another NFL quarterback in Mack's tenure. Between 2010 and 2014, they lost 21 games.

From a national perspective, the program is on the rise. These extensions maintain their momentum and are a huge plus for recruits who desire sustainability in a program.

This is a success for them if Mack shows someone competent can recruit and win consistently. Lay the groundwork, be the guy before the guy - that’s their hope.

I guess it makes sense from UNC’s end.

1. UNC is not a football school; they are a basketball, women’s soccer, and lacrosse school. Football is gravy.

2. Mack is now 15-10, after taking over a UNC program that went 5-14 the last two seasons under Fedora.

3. He just pulled in two, top 15 classes, when UNC was consistently out of the top 15 prior to him being there

4. He just took UNC to a NY6 bowl in only year 2

5. He stomped an absolute mud hole in us that made headline news.

So from UNC’s standpoint, it makes sense. From Mack it makes sense as well. It’s not a high pressured job like Texas who bleed football. UNC would like to do well in Football, but their baby is CBB.

so the 5 str maye is no good?
Mack Brown QB recruits after Vince Young/Colt McCoy:

2009: Garrett Gilbert (5 star)
2010: Connor Wood (4 star), Case McCoy (3 star)
2011: David Ash (3 star)
2012: Jalen Overstreet (4 star)
2013: Tyrone Swoops (4 star)

Mack had a 5 star in the fold after McCoy turned pro and was unable to continue the success. He recruited three more 4 star players, but none provided the same level of production as Colt McCoy (himself a 3 star) and Vince Young had given him.

It takes more than just a quarterback. UNC is losing two great running backs, their two best receivers and best linebacker. The only worry for us is that their entire offensive line returns, so we'd better have a plan to deal with them.

Losing to the worst FSU team in 40 years while sitting just outside the Top 10 was bigger news imo.

And it's funny how ppl here give Mack so much credit for beating us as if UNC doesn't always give us a hard time... Smh whatever *shrugs*
Even funnier for this board to be saying anything negative about him, after he set up Manny saying he should be considered COY and was worried about our defense. This wasn't UNC giving us just a hard time, it was Brown reminding folks of his past, not the Cane's while conducting a Blitzkrieg on us.

Dont think so tbh, he may not get fired, but its unlikely he will get extended after an 8-4 season.
I hope you’re right but I think Díaz will be here for another 2-3 years. Miami will embrace winning 8 games and extend his contract. Our standards isn’t better than UNC and if it is, it isn’t by much. Just look at the process of hiring Díaz. Amateur hour.
