UM spends ~$18 million a year on its football program. That is top 10% of D1 universities. Its not as much as Ohio State, ND, Alabama, LSU and a few others but its the same about of money as UGA, Tenn, USC, and many other successful football programs. So my questions are: Why does UM seem to under-pay its assistants, why do they prefer to only offer an entry level pay structure for new head coaches and most importantly, why does UM always seem to get less for their money than other programs??
Interestingly, its my understanding that the Athletic Department is charged full boat UM tuition for every athletic scholarship. Tuition is $45K a year for UM, that means that the Athletic Department has to pay the University $3.825 million dollars every year for its football team. Lets use UGA as a comparison. Annual tuition & fees at UGA is $15K. So assuming that UGA charges their athletic department full boat, that's only $1.275 million a year. That gives UGA a $2.5 million advantage over UM. ****, that equates to TWO very highly qualified coordinator salaries.
To quote the great American philosopher Medley - "UM is a mom and pop operation."
