UM announces hirings & promotions
The University of Miami Football team announced today the promotion of current staff members Larry Scott, Kareem Brown, Eric Josephs and Jorge Baez. Miami also announced the addition of Josh Darrow, Evan Cooper and Jake Flaherty to the Hurricanes staff.

Scott will add the title of Run Game Coordinator in addition to his duties as Tight Ends Coach. Brown will serve as the Outside Linebackers Coach and will direct the team's Nickel package. Josephs will shift into the role of Director of Player Personnel, while Baez will serve as the Coordinator of On Campus Recruiting/Offensive Personnel.

The three additions to the Hurricanes' staff will feature Darrow moving into the role of Assistant Director of Football Operations - High School Relations and Community Affairs, Cooper being tabbed as the Assistant Director of Player Personnel and Flaherty serving as the team's Offensive Graduate Assistant Coach.

Scott received his promotion to Run Game Coordinator after his second season as Miami's tight ends coach where he helped Clive Walford to a career-best 2014 campaign. This past season Walford earned ACC All-Conference honors and was a Mackey Award Semifinalist. The Sebring, Fla. native is no stranger to working with running backs as he served as the Running Backs Coach at USF in 2012.

"I'm very excited to move Larry into the position of Run Game Coordinator," Golden said. "He's done outstanding job at every level he has coached. He's a leader, a teacher and most importantly he has the respect of our student-athletes."

Brown was promoted to the role of Outside Linebackers Coach after he spent the 2014 campaign working as a Graduate Assistant with the defensive line. The former Miami defensive standout arrived at The U following a stint with the FIU where he worked directly with defensive coordinator Todd Orlando.

"As a former player, who defined toughness here at Miami, I could not think of a better person to direct our outside linebacker corps than Kareem Brown," Golden said. "I love his energy and passion for our program and I know he will be able to further convey what it means to be a Miami Hurricane to our players."

Josephs earned his promotion after he spent the past two seasons, working within the Hurricanes football operations department. Prior to his arrival at The U, Josephs had three different intern stints in the NFL, working with the Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. In his new capacity, Josephs will be responsible for the identification, selection, organization and flow charts of perspective recruits. In addition, the 2008 Miami alum will be responsible for the recruiting travel logistics of head coach Al Golden.

"Eric has shown an unwavering commitment to our program over the past two seasons," Golden said. "His organizational skills and work ethic have played strong role in our recruiting efforts. As an alum of the University of Miami, Eric is very determined to be successful here. I am thrilled to see his career develop within our program."

Baez received his promotion after he spent the 2014 campaign as the program's Assistant Director of Player Personnel. The Miami native came to The U after he spent the 2013 season as Gulliver Prep's Offensive Coordinator. Before arriving at Gulliver Prep, Baez spent two seasons at Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. where he worked as the team's wide receivers coach and co-passing game coordinator. With his promotion, Baez will now coordinate all unofficial visits, independent junior days and continue with his role as the team's offensive player personnel director.

"Jorge brings a great blend of skills to our staff," Golden said. "As a former coach at the collegiate level he understands what it takes to be successful and knows they type of student-athlete we are looking to target. Jorge grew up in South Florida and he has a great passion for the University of Miami. I am thrilled that we are able to promote him within our staff.

Darrow joins the Hurricanes staff as the Assistant Director of Football Operations - High School Relations and Community Affairs after covering South Florida high school, college and professional sports for nearly 15 at WQAM and SFHSSports.com. Darrow is no stranger to Hurricane Athletics, since 1999 he has served as Miami's radio sideline reporter. In his new role, Darrow will coordinate the Hurricanes' 7-on-7 Clinic, oversee the program's in-house social media messaging, manage high school coaching visits to spring practice, direct gameday experiences for youth coaches, oversee instructional clinics in South Florida, supervise the Deserve Victory Tour and coordinate team community events.

"Josh is the perfect fit for this position," Golden said. "His previous experience in covering South Florida High School football has allowed him to develop numerous relationships with some of the area's top coaches. Through his experience, Josh will make a seamless transition into this new role within our program. His knowledge and skill set of today's social media platforms will allow us to further promote our program to top level recruits."

Flaherty joins the staff as the team's offensive graduate assistant. He arrives in Coral Gables after serving as an offensive quality control assistant at Montana State University. Under Flaherty's assistance, the Bobcats offensive unit averaged nearly 500 yards per game (488.3). MSU finished the year with an 8-4 record and just missed out on a bid to the NCAA Championship. In addition, Flaherty spent the summer of 2013 working as a Dallas Cowboys Training Camp Intern. During the summer of 2013, Flaherty worked closely with the Cowboys wide receivers under assistant coach Derek Dooley. As student-athlete, Flaherty played four years at wide receiver at Bucknell University.

"Jake has developed an impressive coaching background in a very short period of time," Golden said. "He comes from a great football family and he is highly motivated to excel in the coaching profession. Jake will be a tremendous addition to our staff and I know our players and staff will enjoy working with him."

Cooper replaces Josephs as the team's Assistant Director of Player Personnel. The Miami native joins the staff after he spent the past two seasons, serving as a Defensive Graduate Assistant at Temple University. Before arriving at his alma mater, Cooper spent two seasons as the defensive backs coach at Westminster Academy in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, while working as a student advisor. As a student-athlete at Temple, Cooper played for Coach Golden and had 44 tackles during his senior season en route to earning the 2008 Carlos Diaz Award as the most improved player following his final season.

"With Evan growing up and coaching in South Florida he truly understands the culture of high school student-athletes in the area," Golden said. "I had the pleasure of coaching Evan at Temple and I know he will bring a great attitude and an outstanding work ethic to our recruiting efforts. He is highly motivated and I know he will do a great job for our program."

I think adding "run game coordinator" to his title allows it to be a promotion. It's the equivalent of being a "senior assistant coach", instead of just an "assistant coach".

Nothing says "winning" like hiring a guy from Montana State. They aren't even the 3rd best college team in the state.

Lots of bodies. A couple of former players, a few local high school coaches, a local former radio station high school reporter and so on. It's as good as we can do right now but my question is this. Who is going to teach these guys the ropes. I'm sure these new sub position positions (Running game coordinator) etc. is something they got from the Cowboys or somewhere else but how in operation does it work? you have Coley, you have ice and now you have this hybrid position. What are his special qualifications? I hope this isn't just window dressing. On the surface it seems like they are just rearranging the deck chairs. Hope it works.
