UCLA going all in for Chip Kelly

Exactly. Lack of knowledge. That's like saying Miami in down years didnt have the ability to get studs. There are way more 3,4 and more stars in the southern cal and cal in general area to go around to both USC and UCLA. UCLA has always been considered to be a sleeping giant. They are finally sick of it, invested a ton on recently opened football facility and stepping up to do the Mora buyout.

Miami has had a pedigree in football for a long time. Now that is not to say that UCLA doesn't have access to great talent, all Im saying is that the statement that its easier to get talent at UCLA than UF is ridiculous. Now the statement doesnt say USC, its UCLA, a school that just never has been viewed as football school. UF recruits itself, even when being led by the likes of sharkfvcker he managed to stumble into top 10 classes. From a football standpoint UCLA is not a premier program and never has.

Maybe not, but I bet he can get UCLA to be even stronger than his Oregon team was, and he nearly won a 'Ship with them..

Thats all possible, Im not gonna say he can't do it. There is no doubt UCLA is located in mega rich recruiting grounds, but it isn't as simple as that. There are politics involved down there and SC is king. Its also why UCLA is a basketball school and SC has never been dominant there either. In terms of Oregon, Phil Knight gave that dude a blank slate to do what he wanted, still not sure if UCLA makes that same commitment or even if they can. I expect Chip Kelly to be successful anywhere he goes though.

He wasn't king in Oregon too, but he convinced enough SoCal kids to come play for him. Imagine the same system, but with a slightly better calibre of athlete - as they're not being convinced to move to Eugene to play, but stay at home instead.

Theoretically it's a great fit.

And that's with Mora. Kelly is as high profile a name as they're going to get. Combine that with him winning more = high profile program that can more easily draw recruits.
And recruiting is as much about who you have to compete with as it is availability. At UCLA, within a huge radius, his only significant recruiting competitor is Clay Helton. In Gainesville it's Mark Richt, Jimbo Fisher, Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Gus Malzahn....

Yet they have never been a factor even when SC had down years. We beat one of their best teams in 98 when we were down. Also UF doesn’t just recruit around around its radius. They have places all over the state where they are the main school interest. All the while still having a presence in areas mainly controlled by Miami and FSU. Not to mention the rest of the state and the rest of the south. Also let’s not act like other PAC 12 and BIG 12 schools don’t constantly dip into So Cal for recruits outside of the strangle hold SC has on the area. Kelly would get excellent talent at UCLA but it’s not what he could get at UF. We constantly pump up Florida talent on this site but now we are downplaying it?

In terms of fit I agree UCLA is great. I just said it’s not guaranteed he eclipses his success at Oregon.

There are a lot more similarities on that list than you probably realized as it regards to competition and presence throughout their respective states.

What it boils down to is this, will UCLA truly commit to football excellence? If the answer is yes, they have as good a chance as anybody to not just get better, but be very competitive.

- Excellent Weather? Check
- Top tier prestigious degree? Check
- Elite local talent? Check
- Large, successful alumni base? Check
- World class city and region to spend your non football time in? Check

They have a ton to sell if it is paired with a name brand coach like Kelly, and a dump into football facilities. I would expect them to be a perennially ranked and competitive team with Kelly, just like I would Florida.

As far as I am concerned, the road to the college football playoff is easier at UCLA. It may take another year to get things in place to get there, but easier to maintain once you do.

Good post. In terms of the road to the college football playoff, it is 100% easier at UCLA. I also think Chip fits in better personally and professionally in a place like Westwood. I also think he will be successful wherever he chooses to go. My point is that based on where the programs are, he could build a better talented program at a place like UF than UCLA. I think with the state of Florida talent he could stumble drunk into the defense he never could dream of at Oregon, being the main reason. Offensive players will flock to him from wherever.
 
His lifestyle, not that there is anything wrong with that, would be more accepted in Los Angeles. No where to hide his buddies in Gainsville.

Yea. They were usually in the top 40 in the Kelly era. For Pac-12, that's pretty **** good.

I heard Chip insisted that they strip down to the underwear before he made them all pancakes for dinner at his log cabin and refused to sign the contract they kept pulling out. It was a weird evening.
 
Chip can call his own shots right now. He’s owed 25M. He’s more of a West Coast guy, and he fits better at UCLA. He’s not going to want to deal with the Bull Gators. He’s not their sort of dude.

UF is clearly the superior job, but it’s not the right fit for him. UCLA has the location and facilities. He can make them better with less pressure.

I’d be shocked if he went to UF. I think UF goes all in with Frost. I hope he goes to Nebraska, but I suspect that he’ll take that gig. Would be a strong hire.
