The NCAA recognizes UCF's national championship.

They also recognize Miami's national title in 2000 but Miami isn't retarded so they don't claim it.

How does the NCAA recognize those? Curious....

Yes. However they still finished first in a national poll that’s recognized by the NCAA. The NCAA doesn’t award a national championship in football. For years championships were awarded by polls. Then the BCS and now the CFP. But there’s still a handful of polls that are recognized by the NCAA although most fans have no idea what most of them are. So technically if you finish first in a National Poll that’s recognized by the NCAA, you are the national champion. Most teams don’t claim those titles because it’s kind of silly and it harkens back to college football’s earliest years when everything was regional and teams didn’t travel across the country to play other teams. All mighty Alabama does claim 15 national titles and a few of them are very suspect though so they are the last people who can complain about UCF

It really dates back to the earliest years of college football when teams only played other local programs so they had groups of pollsters vote on who the national champ should be. Funny thing is, nobody cared about nattys back then. Conference and regional titles were the big prize. Fast forward 150 years and the NCAA still has a list of “recognized” national polls. Some well known like the media AP poll, some completely unknown to most college fans. The Colley-Matrix poll, which I believe was one of the original computer polls used for the old BCS is still used today. It’s completely non-subjective as it’s just a numbers formula. UCF finished #1 in that poll and thus can claim a NCAA recognized national title. It’s stupid and a total publicity stunt by UCF whatever. I think Miami has two or maybe even three unclaimed titles. A ton of schools have them also.
