Could be wrong, but I swear I've heard on this site that S. Coley has dogged it with regard to conditioning and preparation. Is that a truism?

That would be contradicting because all summer and fall we heard how he was ahead of all the WR's. It was Stacy and then everyone else. I remember hearing Golden say something along those lines in an interview, then the season comes and nothing.

When you talk about Stacey his lack of production is because of "idiot coaches." When it comes to Dorsett, Berrios, Herb and Malcolm, they are all having good to great years, yet I guess it's a different coaching staff entirely because they couldn't be idiots with Stacey and great with the others. How could they switch idiocy off and on depending on who they coach? I think it must have more to do with Stacey and that happens with a lot of players, they have injuries, go into a slump, etc. Sometimes they break out of it, sometimes they don't.

Here's one case where I have trouble with the reasoning of calling them idiots or else we'd be seeing problems with others, including especially, Dorsett, who is having a phenomenal year, and with a more experienced QB, might be doing even better. (Not a knock on Kaaya, but he's had to grow into the job--he is on his way to greatness).

We've played 7 games and he has 16 catches. 16. Even worse against our four power 5 opponents he has 6 catches for 162 yards and not TD's, however against those three sparing partner teams (two of which Coley didn't get to play against do to injury) he has 10 catches for 388 yards and 6 tds. That YPC looks great on paper but there aren't anymore A&M's, Arky St, or Cincy's left on the schedule. Let's try having a WR have a dominant game against a power 5 opponent. It's great that Kaaya moves the ball around but maybe if we had a go to WR (ala Winston/Green, Simms/Cooper, Trickett/White) we wouldn't be such a **** show on 3rd downs. The passing game still has lots of room for improvement so stop with the blank, blank, blank is having a great year so coaches are doing a good job with them.

When one of our WR's truly starts dominating and we aren't making less then a 1/4th of our 3rd downs then maybe people won't care that the coaches have a talented playmaker sitting on the bench. But hey he dropped 1 pass against Duke so that means he isn't taking advantage of his opportunities (good thing Braxton wasn't banished to oblivion after a critical drop against UNL).

We would have the same record if he was balling out or not. He's a sophomore, other receivers are playing well, and we have a freshman quarterback. He's on kick returns, punt returns, and is getting snaps at WR. This is not Dorito's unit and the cream rises to the top.

Whatever the failings of this team (which are many), I don't get the complaining about the Wrs. Who has been overused? Dorsett? Ah . . . No. He's pro-worthy. Lewis has been a clutch stud. Berrios isn't stealing balls from Coley. Too many mouths to feed, which is a good problem to have. If Coley ain't getting balls, he ain't separating himself.

What plays do you think are missing from a freshman QB averaging 9+ yards per attempt? Get after it Coley, if you wan the ball.

This recurring Stacy Coley argument is getting ridiculous and certainly wasn't worth another thread. Everyone is talking in circles with very little data to back anything up. If I didn't have several other equally meaningless activities that I enjoy more than re-suffering through our games (sucking at golf, watching my dog not bring back tennis balls that I throw for him, etc...) I would love to get the information about how many snaps he has played, his number of targets, catches v drops, etc... on which I could base an informed argument instead of just stating, "he is being misused" without merely citing a lack of production.

In reality we are talking about the difference of a few plays from last year. If Coley had broken a couple of those screens and caught that deep ball at Duke we would all be talking about how he is better than Julio Jones at this stage in his career all because of a matter of inches. He could easily be doing all the right things and just not getting a few good breaks. That's how it goes for someone who isn't a megatron level of dominant. The flip-side is if he didn't get a few breaks last year no one would give a **** because we would have thought he was a bust last year and then we could be moving forward with our next JAG annointment.

It's been said already but, notwithstanding the idiot coaches, which at this point I think we all agree on, Stacy needs to step up. He's a big boy, and I think many of us have high expectations of him, as we should. He dropped a sure-fire TD on a perfectly thrown ball from Kaaya. While I can't remember other specific plays at the moment, suffice it to say that he hasn't been quite right (yet) this year. For example, IMO he looks tentative on returns (like his intent is to not get hit too hard, rather than to score every time).

He's talented, so I think he'll ultimately be fine, but I don't think he gets a pass because our coaches suck. He has all the talent in the world and a good QB throwing the ball. It's on Stacy for the most part, IMO.

Very true, I feel like Dorsett is running a lot of the deep routes Coley would also be running. If I remember correctly Coley didn't really start to break out last year until after PD got hurt against UNC.

well dg151 has pretty much broken down every snap of the season so far through the GT game so based on his breakdown 246 offensive snaps against UL/UNL/Duke/GT (he didn't play St and missed much of A&M game) he's been in on 69 offensive snaps and 42 of those were against UL. So he's basically been on the field for 23 of 186 offensive snaps since the UL game. Of the 69 plays he was in he was targeted 15 times, caught 9 of those passes for 40 yards, and 1 drop. Sorry but if you think that isn't misuse then go checkout how little Herbs been on the field. Stacy plays most of the game against UL where the game plan was to just run Duke into 9 man fronts, but he can't get on the field now gmafb. Yeah the shoulder injury messed things up and they were going to slowly work him back into the offense but no excuse for him to still not be on the field.

It can't be the drop because looking at dg151 breakdown Braxton has been credited with a couple drops but that's not stopping him from getting a chance and lord knows Clive has nearly 1 drop a game. They obviously don't have any question about his hands because he's the only person outside of Duke that they completely trust to field punts, so much so that even when he was clearly hurt they kept him back there. That's not hearsay either. Also I'm still waiting for someone to tell me about all these routes our WR run that Coley can't? Heck just look at all 16 of Dorsett catches only one (the out against A&M) was a route where he had to get in and out of a break, but I guess Stacy's not good at running streaks up or across the field either now .

Like I said before when your offense is so bad at converting 3rd downs that you can't even fit on ESPN's statistical page because they stop at #122, then there is lots of room for improvement and no justifiable reason to have a playmaker sitting on the sidelines watching.

82 snaps played this year, 9/15 targets (+2/2 on jet sweep plays against Cincy) with 1 drop, plus the fumble against UL. A ton of his catches have come on screens, which makes people complain about his usage, but those are plays where the staff is trying to manufacture him touches (same as the sweep plays against UC). He's run 38 routes (not screens) this year, was targeted 6 times and had 0 catches. He's not getting open, he's not playing well, and he's done nothing to deserve playing time over the current top 4 WRs atm.

Excellent post and thank you for pointing me to that information. I wasn't arguing Coley was being misused (in that post at least, although we probably draw different conclusions from that data and can still both be rationale people in the sense that interpreting it is based on several assumptions). My main point is twofold: 1) nobody bothered to present the stats, and 2) the data set at this point is pretty small due to other issues (3rd down efficiency is a great example), which means a greater chance for atypical results.

Overall I tend to agree with the posters who have pointed out that others are doing well in the offense, and, while I strongly support bringing in a new coaching staff I would rather criticize them for their many obvious and measurable flaws than subscribe to these conspiracy theories about trying to sabotage a player they got good production out of as a true freshman.
