TWENTY ONE Blue-Chips

Good question, but that's part of the fun. This time last year, nobody would've said Toney would be this year's Toney. If you go to the 247 website and click on our 2025 class, Toney is slotted between Luka Gilbert and Ezekiel Marcelin. Let's see who emerges in spring and fall.

great point

every genius now forgets that Malachi Toney was..

a THREE STAR RECRUIT

10th ranked classes should mean that mere coaching competence should get us to the CFP.

Well Mario evaluation been better than 5 star Evaluations . Bain will be first round draft pick he was a 4 star , Toney played like a 5 star kid . Upshaw ,Moore , fritzgerals and Pringle are impact play makers . I’m sure Kellen and Scroggin will shine next year . Luke like to see him in bowl game if for some reason we get shafted out the playoffs

2 Things:

1. I think Bain would’ve been a Cane regardless &
2. I think if Bain was 2 inches taller, he would’ve been a no doubt 5 star, player. I wouldn’t be surprised if at the combine his height is more less 6-1 to 6-1 1/2 v. his 6’3 listing. I think that was held against him as recruiting sites r enamored w measurable.

I’m not sure if I posted here or if in my PMs, but Bain reminded me of a less twitched up Dwight Freeney. His ability to get off the snap & use that low center of gravity to bend around taller OTs, then to counter that w a bull rush as they are expecting the outside rush is quite impressive.

The only difference is Freeney had that crazy spin move that worked **** near every time to get to the QB.

Cantwell is the next Mauigoa.

Asking for the next Toney is completely unfair to any incoming freshman considering that we are actively debating whether he is the best freshman of all-time at UM. This is like asking in 1994 who is the next Ray Lewis. That guy didn’t coming along until Dan Morgan, and even he wasn’t like Lewis as a freshman.

There are people who project, that is all this is, to be contributors early, but a lot of that depends on where the room is on the roster. The more talented and deeper UM becomes, the less chances there will be for impact freshman because the players ahead of them will be very good.

Your question is fair, but if we are honest, we want to be so good that freshman have a hard time making an impact unless they are as good as Toney or Fitzgerald.
That part is right on. I’ve religiously watched this team since 1988. I’ve made it clear on other posts why I sincerely believe we’ve never seen anything like what we’ve seen from Toney as a freshman. The set of circumstances are such that I actually hope we never see it again. Running an entire offense off the back of an 18 year old? And, trying to compete at an elite level? It’s simply amazing what he’s done this year.

My top 4 in regards to NFL draft potential:

Cantwell-Obvious with size and power. His question is how fast can he pass protect well against speedy quick twitch pass rushers? Francis struggled his freshman season with this.

Ervin-Size and athleticism. He could be shaking Goodell's hand in 3-4 years. It may take him 1-2 years to be ready as he is little raw.

Paris-His size and speed combo are insane. Maybe 6'6 and a laser time 4.5.

Waters-Length and athleticism. Reason LSU made a late push.

Day 1 starters as we sit here in December

Cantwell will definitely have a shot at RT as long as he isn’t horrendous in his pass pro… not a doubt in my mind he will be a “good” run blocker day 1

Gets tough after that… not many glaring holes after RT that one of these freshman can grab. I don’t think the LBs are day 1 dudes… Portis or waters but I think Fitz has that nickel role maybe locked up. Depends on if maybe Brody Jennings picks up safety quick?

that's refreshing

Absolutely

Though next year DL looks really really good we obviously need to keep stacking. Easier said than done

Moten/Scott/Blount/Lowe/Lightfoot/Pickett/Simpson

With guys like Cole/Jones/Russell

On paper it’s legit. Losing 3 and 4 is brutal but sheesh that’s 3 five stars likely on our starting DL next year and if Moten comes back that’s a grown man in the middle

That’s serious business
Need to spend some money at EDGE, IMO. Especially if D$'s view of Blount being a full-time DT comes to fruition. If that happens:

DT Scott/Blount
DT Moten/Simpson

That's one heck of a DT rotation.

But, it does leave us in a weird spot at DE with Lowe, Lightfoot, Scroggins, Pickett, etc. In that case, then you really need to go out there and get an impact level DE.

[Still don't personally view Blount as a full-time DT *right now* and thought he'd play Mesidor's role, but we shall see how the next 8 months play out. It'd make more sense to me to leave him as a hybrid player and try to find a 4th DT in the Portal or have one of the young guys step up.]

As I mentioned in another thread, twenty one blue chips is the most that we have signed in a high school class in the last two decades.
