TVD Is Coming Back

https://nflmocks.com/2022/10/04/2023-nfl-draft-tyler-van-dyke/

"I still believe that Tyler van Dyke is a draftable prospect, just not on the first two days of the draft. I think that he is best suited to being a late-round selection that can take the field if there is an injury or in the dying seconds of a game that is incredibly one-sided.

Having said that, we are only in week five of the CFB season and still have a long way to go before draft day, so everything could change either for the better or for the worse."

As a fan, I’m all about stacking chips at every position. I can think of worse backups than Jake to have. But he does have some growing to do in my opinion on and off the field if he is going to be groomed to be a starter. I think perhaps in the right system at the right school he could start.

Let me ask you, why do you think Jake was passed over by Brown?
It was the face paint bro! It’s always the face paint!

Passed over? You mean the OC's bad decision? We found out in the Pitt game that Garcia is better.

I touched on it briefly in my Josh Gattis thread. My belief is that Gattis really Eff'd Jake Garcia over this season. When TVD went down, Jake had to split first team reps with Brown. Garcia was never handed the reins. My guess is that Gattis felt he could do more with Brown's running ability because Gattis likely knows that he is not a schematic whiz.

Garcia continued to struggle IMO because he's a pocket passer in a poor schematic passing system. Keep in mind TVD also looked like doo doo this season as well. I do not think Brown is anywhere near the QB that Garcia is. In fact, (and Im not a fan of bashing players online) but I will be highly surprised if Brown ever becomes a competent Power 5 QB. Im not high on Brown at all.

Garcia on the other hand has shown to be a **** good passer and has a way better pocket presence than folks here give him credit for. There's a reason why Garcia was USC's top QB commit at the end of his junior season. Gattis constantly pulled Garcia for inexplicable reasons. The 3rd quarter of the Pitt game was a perfect example. Garcia comes out strong, goes 3 for 3, picks up two first downs and Gattis pulls him and puts Brown in just to hand the ball off. What in Sam **** was that? Gattis simply refused to allow Garcia to develp any kind of rhythm. In fact, at the end of the game when Brown was injured and Gattis didnt have his other toys, he left Garcia in the game and Garcia looked solid in the 4th quarter.

Somewhat disjointed response from me but the crux of my thoughts are that Garcia is a potential legit, Power 5 starting QB and Brown is a low probability project. The fact that Gattis didnt see that is, in part why he's about to be unemployed here shortly.

I agree in that he was not put in a great position this year. But for whatever reason Gattis AND Mario looked at Garcia and Brown when TVD went down and chose Brown to start the last few games (or come in when TVD was hurt). That is not a decision where Mario looks at Gattis and says “Whichever one you want G man”

So something just isn’t adding up for me. I am 100% with you on Brown mind you. I like the kid. Has great energy. But other than some goal line or short yardage sub package I have a hard time seeing him developing into a very good P5 QB.

Garcia was handed the reigns against VA. I wanted him to start the last few games. But for some reason Mario and Gattis chose Brown. I wanted to give Garcia enough rope to get off the ground and fly or hang himself. But here we are debating what we have in Garcia.

Has to be that he knows Gattis is done here.
Insanity is doing the same over and over again and expecting a different result. Why in the right mind will anyone on the offensive side of the ball would come back if Gattis stays? Makes no sense. TVD and Garcia would be hurting their stocks

Hopefully He gets the WRs numbers this off-seaon and stops acting like He's scared of inner city ninjas with BBCs.

I just don’t see it. I’d be curious does he even get a grade. Maybe @DMoney can get with his boy petey and provide us a little insight on what draft grade Tyler wouldve gotten if he came out this year.
I did see a few days ago Walter football had him with a 2nd-4th round grade and said pro sources like his instincts and feel as a passer

Correct but has he beaten FSU yet? Not blaming him for the loss by any means...he barely played in this years game... just stating he hasn't been able to beat their biggest rival yet...
To be fair he led team to a come back last year. Manny’s defense blew another 4th and forever in final minutes and topped it with a dumb attempt at a goal line stand instead of letting them score and giving ball back to offense with just under a minute.

Thoughtful response.

My only guess is that Mario and/or Gattis felt that given all of the injuries at the other skill positions (RB, TE, & WR) that Garcia, who is primarily a distributor type QB would be less effective than Brown who is better at scramble ball. What ended up happening after the Ga Tech game is that teams got film on Brown and forced him to have to complete forward passes and he was incapable of that.

I have some lightly verified theories that I’ll keep to myself and prob irresponsible to post

You and I may have different grades on him. But I think he is still a quality backup. But if I’m looking at his best interest I think it’s a new environment at a G5 with a good chance to start (or perhaps the right P5 situation).

I thought when Brown was given those opportunities that he would bolt unless given a meaningful NIL and a hard sell by Mario to stay and see what the new OC can do with him. Looks like it’s leaning in that direction

Personally I look at his ceiling as a very poor man’s Brett Favre.

Garcia is coming back, and rightfully so. The job is his after TVD leaves, and twice (!) in the last season he had to step in for TVD when he got hurt.

Basically, he’s more or less guaranteed a starting role in 2024 and beyond, and is a snap away from getting that role in 2023, behind a quarterback with injury issues.

Definitely the right call.

Let’s face it, Brown should really never have been on the field this year outside of subbing him in for the occasional 3rd and short read-option.

So the real question is how is TVD going to look in Arroyos offense?

Don't kid yourself, you know Mario wants his old OC who had the Ducks offense around the top 15.
