Tulane's #1 Choice Is Dawson

His last four games of the season reminded me of the Aggie game… space… creativity… creating mismatches. It felt like it all changed after that game until after SMU… just keep doing what we’ve been doing

And no I’m not gonna give him full credit for Cams season… cam was a magician and made plays out of nothing he was elite and special

My man, take off the O&G glasses for a second. I actually want Dawson to come back (needs a consultant for the run game though). But let's weigh his pros and cons a little more carefully:

First, 1M a year difference is nothing to sneeze about. 3% state income tax is nothing compared to the cost of living in Miami. Second, a HC contract comes with a multiyear guarantee, doubt his UM contract is even close. Third, he wouldn't have to work for Mario. Cushy? Have you been watching how Mario treats his coordinators? He has to be one of the most challenging bosses in the history of bossdom. Fourth and Finally, the dude is a frickin Cajun. ... oh, and as a bonus, he wouldn't have to deal with Mirabal on his staff who, no matter how much Dawson may like the dude, is Mario's best bud and undermines Dawson' authority just by existing.

If this is a serious deal, Dawson would be insane not to take a HARD look at it.
bro they already promoted the guy already on staff.

I disagree but neither one of us know his true situation, so it's pointless to speculate. How challenging is Mario on him, personally? He barely recruits. I think the Mario stigma is true 98% of the time because he forces his assistants to be relentless in recruiting. It doesn't seem that's the case for Dawson. How much does he love Miami? How much does his wife like Miami? How much do his kids like Miami? Obviously $1M is nothing to sneeze at, but is that the true delta between what he's making and what he'd be offered at a G5 gig? We don't know the answers to these questions. What if he really doesn't care to be a HC? Some guys really don't give a ****.

Usually assistant contracts are 2 years or 3 years, so he's probably due for an extension this off-season. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out.

Absolutely nothing wrong with being content in your current situation. Some people would rather stay in their comfort zone then venture into the unknown. Been there. Done that. Many factors go into making a life altering decision.

The plays and tactics aren't some secret, the real magic from both Shannon and Cam have been as caveman therapists.

It's about mindset and philosophy, which is also why it was fixable in season but also a long term project.

I can agree with this… need to get away from the phone booth “game control” offense that I think Mario wants the identity of having

He even made a comment the other day on Herbies show about “need to cut it loose” after the SMU game and just staying with it

It might have finally clicked for him that you can’t have all these athletes and then cut the field in half horizontally. We’ll see going forward because these past 4 weeks really felt like last year with Cam

I know Dawson interviewed for the Tulane job, but I truly believe that if he comes back for one more year and whatever agreements need to be made between him and Mario regarding offensive approach lead to the strategy for our last 4 games stretching out to all of next season, then Dawson will get an opportunity at some P4 school that is kind of done with their HC and has tons of potential.

Truth is, I wouldn't be overly surprised if he took over the Noles spot, but regardless, he'll get a chance at better job than Tulane if he (and the entire team) performs next year like they did the last 4 of this year.

One more year of Heatherman and Dawson + Mario maintains his own "awakening" that he's alluded to in interviews, and we will be cemented as one of the elites and will be a playoff team with a shot at the heavy weight title.

this is the second opening he's a candidate for which he's interviewed, which means he's actively working towards leaving.

"Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Coastal Carolina concluded its final round of interviews Wednesday morning and is targeting a final decision in the next 24 hours."

"Sources indicated to FootballScoop that Dawson, who also was a central figure in Tulane's coaching search to replace outgoing Jon Sumrall, was asked to interview and spoke with Coastal Carolina's contingent in the past 24 hours."

Now taking the CC job would be stupid IMO. But it definitely shows he's wary and weary of working for Mario. I'm a Mario fan. But I would never want to be a coordinator for him.

Maybe he just wants to be a head coach. It doesn’t automatically mean he wants to get away from Mario.

Maybe, but whereas Tulane was 3M, CC was just over 1M in salary. He makes 2M. One was a 50% raise, the other is a 50% paycut. Hence my feeling it means he wants to get away from Mario.

Just think he can get a better job than that but oh well. We have survived a sweat with Dawson the last 2 offseason. I’m not sure however on this one as he might get the job

The truth with all of these scenarios is that Dawson has an agent and his agent only gets paid when Dawson gets paid.

The agents are reaching out to their candidates and saying "let's just see what they have to say" and Shannon is like "sure, sounds good".

Its also common practice just to keep these guys names in the cycle in case they actually want to be a head coach at some point.

But yes, if he leaves and takes a 50% pay cut to be a head coach, that would certainly be noteworthy.

Personally I think he should shoot higher.

Hartline just went from P4 co-coordinator to a head coach at USF and he's not as good of an OC as Dawson but a better recruiter.

He's had two good years with transfer QBs, so his stock is high right now, as it should be. There's also likely to be some question about the QB situation next year. His agent would be derelict if he wasn't putting his name out there.
