Tulane's #1 Choice Is Dawson

I think they worked together on the Kentucky staff.
EDIT: Oops, sorry, I thought the reference was to Dawson.
Cade Bell would make a lot of sense for uf, and he may able to bring the Pitt QB with him.
Bringing in the unranked Pitt QB regardless of how well he played this year may cause a tidal wave of Gator tears

it did not cost us

Carson Beck threw 4 interceptions and we still could have won the louisvile game

a roughing penalty and a Carson Beck back breaker Interception in overtime broke us vs SMU

wasn't an INCREDIBLE year for the offense but still 20 in most metrics, anyone hating on dawson just is clueless
My only complaint is the lack of creativity in the running game. He seems to scheme guys open quite often.

Are we still planning on the "avoid negative plays at almost any cost" approach? If so, I pray Dawson sticks around. He seems like the only dude who's able to at least sometimes work around the constraint.

The sheer risk of finding someone else to "blend in" legitimate passing concepts with a system **** bent on a conservative, predictable [run] foundation is just bad math.

That’s a concern.
But at the same time, Mario’s offenses never really bottom out with that approach across several OCs.
Only Year 1 here did the floor collapse, and that’s without his personnel.

His 2018 offense finished 45 in F+. But he’s still building up the roster at that point.
2019 was 17.
2020 was COVID so who cares.
2021 offense was 24. And that’s with pretty average QB play.
2022 was a disaster but also the talent hadn’t been brought in yet.
2023 was 36 with Dawson. So a little bit of bottoming still. But that was a lack of QB issue.
2024 was 1.
2025 is 18.

Across multiple OCs during that time frame, once he gets a few recruiting classes under his belt and gets an average to really good experienced QB, his offenses tend to be in that 15 to 25 range with the exception of Cam Ward.

I don’t think we need Dawson to once again find ourselves in that range next season.

What if Mario just calls plays

Another Arkansas Coach from the Todd Graham disciple Tree.

He'd be a great hire, but he wouldn't come here to have Mirabal dictating the run scheme. He's a Veer & Shoot guy, no way would he be on board with implementing our power run system.

And you can't run the Faulkner Valdosta ST Power-Pistol unless we get a run first mobile QB. Unfortunately, most of the mobile QB's that would be available aren't that great of passers.

That's a complete philosophical overhaul that would envelop the entire offseason installing & would likely lead to setbacks during the season. Everybody's all hot & heavy over Brent Key now, but people forget he was barely floating above .500 before this season. It would take several years to convert the identity of our Offense to effectively transition to that style of play.
Thoughts on Duke’s Jonathan Brewer if Dawson leaves?

Assuming that Mario was holding Dawson back until after the SMU game (and, I do believe something like that happened), if I was Mario, I would give him a raise, promise to keep his hands off the O next year, and point out that Oregon's OC just got a P4 job.

If Dawson waits one more year, and Mario let's him cook, he will leave, but it will be the best thing for all parties.

It comes down to who is the portal QB but for all his faults or Mario’s faults. The offense produced enough to win 20 games in 20 years. There’s a lot to complain about but if Dawson stays is not one of them.

The conundrum with wheoever the next potential OC will be, is dealing with the Mirabal factor.

If Mirabal continues to have significant input on the run game & offensive personnel in general, it won't really matter who the OC is, the same problems will exist.
I’m fine with them (Mario/Mirabal) having input on the mentality regarding the run game given they want to recruit certain types of Oline and you want an OC who is going to maximize that… but yeah they absolutely need to let go of the reigns to the OC as far as run game design.

I think we never go full spread, always going to be a team that uses 12 personnel a lot, which I don’t dislike. We just can’t have a run game like the first 3/4 if this year…

As it stands now, I think Tulane would be the only threat for Dawson to take.

Think the pay is is a little lower than we have to worry for North Texas. He'd make about the same as he does here and we can go up. Hope Neal Brown gets it.

Also watching JMU for Hetherman. Think they would want him or Bryant Haines/Shanahan from Indiana. Same can be said for the salary there. They paid Chesney around $900k and that's probably not gonna be a go for CH. Broyles award caliber DC's launching pad to a HC job is much faster than going the G5 route at HC. That will be a 2-3-4 year process to end up at a failing Big 10 program. Broyles award DC puts you at a successful P5 program that loses their HC to a bigger program.

Not the biggest Dawson fan but I'm a fan of continuity and think having an OC in place is critical for our portal QB pursuit

Fack
I didn’t even think about the JMU opening and him coaching there. I’d hope he would hold out for better but couldn’t be mad at him for taking that. We’d have to ante tf up.
