I was going to do this about the offense but I think it would be interesting to do one about the True Freshmen first since this is such a deep class. The following list is in no particular order.

1. OT Jackson Cantwell 6'7½" 325
As hyped as Cantwell has been I'm not sure that most have a realistic grip on how good this kid can be and the type of rare tools he possesses. Just to put his strength numbers into perspective I'll compare Cantwell's testing numbers vs the NFL avg
Bench press 450lbs(Cantwell) vs 400-450lbs(NFL Avg)
Squat 645lbs(Cantwell) vs 550-700lbs(NFL avg)
Power Clean 365lbs(Cantwell) 300-350 lbs(NFL Avg)
Power Clean shows functional explosion
Shot Put 76' 11.25"(Cantwell) N/A(NFL)
This record shows the strength he has in his hands.

Most OL recruits need 2-3 years in a college S&C program to come anywhere close to the above #s. Jackson Cantwell is basically entering college with an NFL ready frame (84" Wingspan) and strength numbers that are above or in the upper end of the NFL avg. This means that he can just concentrate on technique and fundamentals.

Despite his size he shows advanced mobility. He began as a Tight End and still shows exceptional footwork and lateral quickness allowing him to reach the 2nd level with ease.
He is already known for his aggressive and nasty style and had 158 pancakes in one season. He doesn't just block defenders. He literally drives them into the ground. His run blocking is absolutely dominant and elite. He is still developing in Pass Pro where it is said that right now, Cantwell is more of a "Catcher"(pause) than a "Puncher" when going against speed rushers.

Cantwell's floor is described as a "Multi year starter for top P4 program and early NFL pick. At minimum he is a dominant plug and play drive blocker at Right Tackle or Guard.

Cantwell's ceiling is an All American and top 5 NFL draft pick and and All Pro Left Tackle. "If he masters Pass Protection depth and Hand Placement, he has the tools to be the best offensive lineman in the NFL."

2. S JJ Dunnigan 6'2" 185
JJ Dunnigan is a versatile defensive back prospect from Kansas. The staff intends on using him as a versatile safety and/or Nickel defender. Timed at 10.94 in 100m and played DB, WR and KR in high school. Dunnigan possesses elite range with the ability to go from hash to hash with ease while striking ball carriers with conviction.

Dunnigan plays with violence and plays through would be blockers to finish tackles. He is quick to read and diagnose plays and triggers downhill effectively in run support. His length and speed allow him to man up with elite WRs as well as match up with TEs up the seam.

As with most aggressive players, he can get caught over pursuing or over running plays. He also still needs technical refinement on the more detailed nuances of Safety and Nickel play. Dunnigan would also benefit from adding a good 10-15 lbs and increasing core and functional strength to handle the rigors of a P4 college schedule.

Floor: Rotational Safety/Special Teams Ace
Ceiling All ACC Standout/NFL Draft Prospect

3. WR Somourian Wingo 6'2" 180
Wingo is a multi sport athlete who brings basketball athleticism and elite ball tracking skills to the football field. Wingo excels at winning 50-50 balls and has the core strength to secure off target throws through contact. He is capable of playing both at X WR and in the slot to exploit mismatches. Dangerous after the catch he used his lateral agility and quick feet to make defenders miss and sheds tackles with a sturdy, powerful build.

Despite all his athleticism, Wingo lacks elite speed. Like most freshmen, he needs to add strength and some good weight. Wingo also must learn to be a more consistent run blocker.
Floor: Reliable Rotational Receiver/Chain Mover

Ceiling: All ACC WR/ Primary target for CFP contender.

4. WR Milan Paris 6'5½" 205
Milan Paris is a prospect at the X WR position. He possesses elite size and length that he uses to overwhelm smaller defensive backs. Has rare size/speed combination 4.54 40 that he uses to stretch the field. Has a massive catch radius as his length and leaping ability allow him to act as a "Rebounder" in the red zone where he specializes in winning 50/50 balls. Uses his size and strength as an asset in the run game where he blocks by driving defenders into the turf.
His weaknesses are a limited route tree as he must work on the ability to run more complex intermediate patterns plus he needs more fluidity to be able to maintain speed through his breaks on non vertical routes. Another 10-15 lbs of muscle would help him use his frame to better leverage P4 defenders.

Floor: Red Zone Specialist
Ceiling: NFL caliber X Receiver

5. DT Keyshawn Stancil 6'3" 275 lbs
Shows elite first step allowing him to quickly penetrate into the backfield. Stancil has shown a great amount of versatility as he has lined up anywhere from 0 tech(Nose) to 5 tech(edge) in 4 man fronts allowing for scheme versatility. Shows great strength at the point where he is known to deliver a devastating pop overwhelming defenders. Stancil has great pursuit ability and shows exceptional lateral quickness and a high motor tracking plays from the backside.

Stancil needs to work on his leverage as he plays too high at times. Also needs to develop an ****nal of counter moves for when his natural strength and speed are neutralized. Needs to work on improving hand placement and striking ability to shed blocks more effectively at the college level. Has the frame to add 20 lbs easily that will allow him to anchor vs ACC OLs.

Floor: Solid interior 2 down defender
Ceiling: All Conference/Top tier NFL prospect

6. LB JJ Edwards 6'1" 205 lbs
Edwards shows elite blitzing ability. Uses his speed and instincts to chase down ball carriers sideline to sideline. Plays with a nonstop motor often described as playing with "his foot on the gas at all times.". Edwards still needs to add muscle and strength to better handle the college game. He also still needs to better learn to finer points and techniques of playing LB. As a converted Safety Edwards isn't new to pass coverage but he still needs to refine his skills in zone and man.

Floor. Special Teams Standout/Situational Pass Rusher
Ceiling: All ACC/NFL draft pick

7. OL Ben Congdon 6'7½ 320 lbs
Congdon possesses elite length(pause) and is described as "Playing Mad" and as someone who frequently records pancake blocks. He is a decorated heavyweight wrestler which translates to superior leverage, balance and hand strength.

Congdon is elite in the run game using elite punch power and the ability to manhandle defenders once he establishes leverage. He shows great effectiveness trapping and pulling on zone schemes and despite his massive size he shows surprising quickness and burst out of his stance. He is also know for his high motor and tenaciousness often chasing plays for 50 yards to block for his teammates.

He needs to refine his technique in Pass Pro as his high center of gravity can make him vulnerable to speed rushers. Like most freshmen he need to add strength and good weight. If he is forced to move laterally vs twitchy edge rushers, he can seem plodding.

Floor: High quality depth piece
Ceiling: Multi year starter with NFL potential

8. CB Jaelen Waters 6'2" 180
Waters is a blue chip CB prospect with an elite frame and length(pause). He is highly proficient in press man coverage with elite instincts and ball skills. He is adept at turning and locating the ball which leads to pass breakups and interception. Waters is also very active and effective in run support. Waters does lack elite recovery speed and he needs to work on maintaining his speed through transitions as well as being more consistent as a tackles.

Floor. Depth Boundary Corner/Special Teams
Ceiling Multi year All Conference Starter/ NFL Prospect

9. TE Gavin Meuller 6'5" 255 lbs

Mueller scored a 93 explosion score with a 10 foot broad jump. In high school he played Tight End, Running Back and Wildcat QB and scored 30 TDs as a Senior. He is a natural hands catcher with a huge catch radius and body control and is dynamic after the catch with great burst and vision. He has only played football since his junior year so his position coach will need to work on refining his technique and blocking consistency.

Floor: Red Zone Specialist/Goal Line Weapon
Ceiling: All American TE/Elite NFL Prospect

10. DE Asharii Charles 6'2" 235 lbs
Charles is a high motor, explosive edge defender. He has a lightning quick first step that allows his to get across the LOS before the OT gets into his pass set. He is smaller than the typical DE at 6'2" 235 lbs yet he has 34" arms and 10½" hands. Together with his low center of gravity, Charles is able to easily gain leverage on opposing offensive linemen and Tight ends. He is known for his elite production with 24.5 sacks and 39 TFLs over both his Junior and Senior years. He is exceptionally strong for his size with a 360 LB power clean and a 400 LB bench press. He uses this strength to walk larger tackles back into the backfield. Charles is a violent finisher with a knack for creating negative plays and forcing fumbles(6 in 21 games). Since he is a smaller DE there are concerns about him consistently holding up vs the run. He can squeeze lanes and pursue outside the hashes but he needs to refine his technique to be a 3 down DE. He needs to be more consistently violent and precise with his hand placement in order to u lock his potential. He must prove he can set a hard edge before the coaches reward him with playing time. Key for Charles will be getting up to 250-255 lbs while maintaining his elite burst.

Floor: Quality Rotational Depth Piece
Ceiling: Top 100 NFL Draft Pick

11. LB Jordan Campbell 6'2½" 210 lbs
Campbell is a versatile LB that many services view as an edge rusher because during his senior year that was what he was asked to do. In reality, Campbell's history as a high level off ball LB and track athlete make him a very intriguing LB prospect who has many different skills. As a former track standout, Campbell has rare gap closing speed and a nasty first step. He excels as a stand up 2 point stance edge rusher with the ability to bend the corner with flexibility and juice. Campbell is known as a LB who finishes with violence often getting into the QB's head with his relentless pursuit and non stop motor. Because he has played WR and LB he has three fluidity to play in space. He can effectively reroute slot receivers or spy mobile QB's. Having moved from off ball LB to edge he likely needs time to focus on LB to learn the finer points of the position. He also needs time to add strength and muscle to effectively deal with major college football offenses.

Floor. High end Special Teams Ace and pass rush Specialist who provides depth at different LB spots.

Ceiling. All ACC Impact Starter. NFL draft prospect. If he grows into a 240lb+ frame while maintaining his speed, he could become a dominant hybrid defender.

12. CB/Nickel Jontavius Wyman 6'1" 175 lbs Wyman is a multi phase athlete having played almost every position on the field including QB and WR. On defense he has played every position in the secondary. He has played Boundary Corner, Field Corner, Safety and Nickel. Wyman brings elite ball skills to the Hurricane secondary. His background as a WR gives him the ability to high point the ball and pick off passes that others merely deflect. He has an extremely high football IQ and he likes to bait QBs into making dangerous throws then using his speed to make a play. Wyman is also a dynamic kick returner averaging 28 yards per kick and punt return.

Wyman has a slender frame and needs to gain strength and muscle to play effectively at this level. Also because he has played so many positions, he needs to focus on learning the finer points and techniques of one.

Floor. Special Teams Contributer
Ceiling All ACC Starter at Nickel or CB

I think this is the best class mario has brought in by far, maybe we won’t have top5 pick level players like bain and francis but i think the hit rate will be higher than any other class so far

Every year i like to put guys in tiers after watching every piece of tape each player has available to see if i can improve my personal eye i agree with most of your list. Here’s the first two tiers

IMG_9160.jpeg

Im most confident in cantwell and Dunnigan starting early because i think they have clear spots and roles. I think wingo, charles and Ervin will be stars too but since their positions may be loaded now we may just see flashes early before they fully start

Ervin nursing an injury but he doesn’t get mentioned enough imo, charles as well but edge is loaded.

Portis and Wynn could be our nickels if they’re physically and mentally ready

2025 hit rate is absurdly good. Would love to see back to back like that

Here's the funny thing. Originally I was going to list about 15 players. You want to know who the other 5 were going to be???

OL Joel Ervin
DB Jontavius Wyman
DB Camdin Portis
OL Rhys Woodrow
LB Jordan Campbell

Great minds.........

Also great job on this @FrancisSawyer

I didn’t follow recruiting as closely this year but Asharii Charles I think has a chance to be at that #2 spot after Cantwell when all is said and done. Part of that being the coaching he will hopefully be getting the next 3-4 years

I love your optimism OP, but if Mario has recruited in the manner he believes he has, only 3-4 freshmen will have meaningful snaps. And that is not a knock on the freshman as much as it is a statement about depth on the roster.
No one will be as good as Toney, and probably not as good as Fitzgerald either. The playing time won’t provide the opportunities. But Cantwell, another OL and a LB have the best chance.

On defense I think Dunnigan & any of the linebackers have by far easiest paths to playing time. On offense Cantwell starts, Mueller, Wingo, and Parris have great shots to get on the field in rotational duty. Ervin & Congdon have a lesser chance but should get some time in mop up duty games. D line, Rb, and corner rooms are so stacked its hard to see a freshman playing a lot this year.

You all know by now I love Dunnigan as a prospect. I don’t know if he’ll really get a chance this season, but what a skill set.

Cantwell has consistently reminded me of Taylor Lewan.

If we’re going to have some surprise youngster break through, I pray it’s at LB.

From moment he touched down and got scout team reps to now with off season training he has had a buzz about him. Add his athletic profile and pedigree I think Dunnigan will have a real chance.. You listen to his pops talk ball and training, and its easy to understand why..

Still have some landmarks to really confirm, especially a freshman but so far so good.

Agree that this class has the highest floor I've seen as far back as I can remember. I don't see any outright busts. We'll inevitably have transfers because only 22 can play at a time. But I'll bet those guys from this class who do transfer land similar to how Chris Johnson or Popo or Schott and end up starters at other good P4 programs.

We're deeper in quality upperclassmen than we've been since the early 2000s at nearly every position, except OL and TE, so that's where I see a true Freshman emerging as a starter.
  • Cantwell is the no brainer. Ervin and Congdon have a shot at legit playing time, as well
  • Mueller played against weak comp in high school but has all the physicals to be a baller. I expect him on the field early and often
If those two step up meaningfully, it increases our chance for a Natty run substantially. They have until the ND game to figure it out. But we'll need the for the playoffs.

After them, I'll jump on the bandwagon with Dunnigan and Wingo. I like both LBs, they'll see action. We're so **** deep at DL, CB, RB, I'm not sure how much action our new guys will see outside of 4th quarter garbage time. But injuries happen and one of them will be tapped. Antoine played great when we got unexpectedly thin down the stretch, and I expect Charles, Portis, Waters, etc will deliver when called upon.

I think this is the most realistic look at the situation. Looking at the condition of each room matters when trying to anticipate who will have opportunities.

I would add another variable to this calculation. Some positions see a lot more rotation than others. It is much easier for a second team DL to make a splash than a second team OL. They just don't sub out very much (outside of injuries).
