Trend in HS football to use fast LBs in D line

Here is one in my neck of the hood that was a safety last year now moved to OLB and DE. He is a legit 6-3 and 190 pounds. Also is faster than Brini the corner-safety who is a year older at 200 meters 23.64 vs 23.73. Kid could carry 220 as an OLB. Interesting prospect to follow maybe a T. Armbrister type.

2019 Sam Brooks is an absolute beast!

He embarrassed Herbert off the edge when MNW played AH lol...

Not really a trend. Been going on for a long time. Ryan Shazier played DE when he was in high school.

Coaches are always looking for the best way to create pressure off the edge and not everybody has prototype DE's on their roster.

Maybe not a "trend" but definitely used much more in HS football as the passing game has become quite common and pressure must be put on the QB. After retiring with 34 years in HS and JUCO football as a DL-line coach football in California I have seen the "trend" escalate drastically in recent years to become almost common place.

I remember back in the 90s and early 2000s when 190-pound guys like the Weaver Twins and Willie Jones would rack up 20 sack seasons against Dade OLs.

Jones HS career was something else he had over 30 sacks I believe as a senior. Was explosive and could bench around 350 coming out of HS. He has a lot of injuries at FSU and at 6-1 was placed at DE bulked up to 240 or so but never was close to what he did in HS. The Weaver brothers has very good HS careers but at the U never equaled anything close to that as they were tried at different positions I vaguely recall off-hand.

Weavers were too skinny. They were legit 180 pounds. One wound up leaving for FIU. The other stuck around and ran down on STs. They had a ton of sacks at Northwestern.

Correct--one Jermel Weaver ended up playing for Strock at FIU in 2003 and was listed at 6-2/180 as a safety. I guess he left the U and went there.

Jones could have been something but tore and knee then Achilles, etc at FSU. He was up to 245 as a DE and benching over 400. Leg damage destroyed his explosiveness.
The Weaver's are a different story. One of them ended up playing as a back up safety for Don Strock in the very early days of FIU football when they were really terrible.
As a senior Jermel was listed at 6-2/180 so was to small for a DE or even LB and too slow for a DB.

Except for Jones the Weavers were no where in the same quality as those previously mentioned.

Back up at the beginning of the FIU program when they has 5-10 210 lb. LBs starting! FIU football started in 2002.

I liked the films but back in that area were HS O-linemen as well skilled in pass protection as they are now? The prolific passing games of the last 10 or so years have made teaching pass blocking technique to OL very important

True. in my last years of coaching as a JUCO coach after retiring from HS football. I saw the trend of going after large HS TE's that maybe did not have the speed and or hands to play TE at the next level and converting them to OL-men especially at the tackle position as they were usually far more athletic than many of the pure HS O-Lmen coming out as far as footwork and quickness was concerned. Also, quite a number of the big TEs were blocking TEs in HS so were not all that unfamiliar with the T position.
