We seem to be eagerly awaiting the transfer portal season and thinking we can fix our weaknesses. Looking at last year only, I’d say we only hit on 3 of 11 transfers.
Cam was a grand slam, ZC is a solid starter for us and DM is really coming into his own. The rest? We got some regular rotation guys, but nowhere near the impact of ZC and DM, much less even in the same strasophere as Cam.

3/11 is not a good hit rate. Not to mention, the missed opportunities for the freshmen to play and grow. In some cases, I would argue playing the freshmen more would not have made things worse and we would have more of a known quantity heading into next year.

If we are tapping into portal, we need to be channeling through the back door with the best of the best ahead of time. Last year I think we were out front on Cam, Jaylin and Dyoni. Everyone else I think we put our name in the hat after they announced they were in the portal. Thats not how Oregon and SEC teams do transfer portal.

Impact
Cam Ward
Zach Carpenter
Simeon Barrow
Damien Martinez

Meh/No impact
Elijah Alston - injured - role player usage
Tyler Baron - nothing since early season out of conference
Reese Poffenbarger
Sam Brown - Zay, Jojo, Ny
CJ Clark - Justin Scott
Marley Cook
Jaylin Alderman - Pruitt
Meesh Powell - Quan, Markeith
D'yoni Hil - Stafford, Mack
Isaiah Taylor - hurt
Savion Riley
Tyler Rowe - ????

I don't want more than 3-4 transfers. We have a bunch of top blue chips that Mario recruited. They'll be sophomores and juniors. It's their time to shine.

Simeon Barrow was a hit, but the point remains the same.

DL has been a huge disappointment. After game 1-3, I thought we hit a grand slam. But as the season wore on, baron and Alston have been disappointing (albeit a little banged up).

Need another 4-5 DL portal class. The thing, like elite DBs, gonna be real tough to lure top flight portal DL

Meesh Powell and Dyoni Hill are how I expect LSU fans felt about Andre Sam and Duce Chestnut last year. "What in the **** are they doing here?"

Just players not at standard (or even close), but because high school recruiting was so poor, prior, they have to be takes. But these guys are not good.

Qb, rb, wr, dl, cb, and s. Not quantity driven but need a high quality add at all these spots. Our portal hit rate hasn't been great and we need to course correct on that immediately if we expect to significantly continue to climb upwards.

Those are the holes Miamis got going into next year in my opinion, before more guys leave in the offseason/declare for the draft.

Pick your 4 transfers.

QB
WR
1 Oline
Blocking TE
2 DT
2 DE
LB
2 CB
FS
SS

I would focus on QB, DL, S and CB in that order.
RB and WR are luxury pick ups imo, but if we got the $$$, than I’d go WR. I think we have a stable of good rbs that will only get better. I kinda feel the same way about WR, but outside of Horton, no experience to hang your hat on.

And then when we go 6-6 and lose to a bunch of teams that have portal guys you’ll be *****ing too. Every single good team is doing both portal and high school. It’s the way it works.

Ranking 2024's transfer class

Ward
Martinez
Crapenter
Barrow
Baron
Powell
Brown
Alston
Clark
Alderman
Cook
Hill
Poffenbarger
Taylor

With all this money being infused into the program and Mas support, why do we not have a more professional scouting department?

I have dbs second , that’s arguably the worse position group on our team

Meesh was pretty good. He was a nickel who got forced into a FS role and teamed up with the worst safety I’ve ever seen in a Miami uniform….and that’s saying something given the last 15 years

Pretty good? Cmon.

In this era you have to bring in more than that, because you also lose more than that to the portal.

Mario brought in 40 transfers and high school players last year, and lost the same. I'd expect similar numbers from here on.

Yup was saying since he got here he was not a free safety and that Harris was not a safety at all. We misused our defenders this year. From d-line playing coverage too much to stunting on every other down, it was awful to watch. Baron had a few games where he didn’t get sacks and then we started stunting him inside and into double teams and covering the flats. D-ends won’t produce in that system.
