Top 6 coaches in U history

Stupid, stupid article. We were not "largely irrelevant" until the 1980's.

He should have had Andy Gustafson in that list. He's the only one of our coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Wish I had an email for this dolt Blake Silvers.

Did you even read the article you are whining about? Gustafson is on that list.

For Gustafson to be the only former UM HC in the CFB HOF is Total insanity...and very troubling....

Meh !!.......This list doesn't bother me in the least

All I've got to say about whoever made it is....

You're right. I missed it. The way you had to scroll down on one's phone I must have scrolled right past it. My bad.

It was late, I guess.

We were not largely irrelevant, however, until '80's.

Maybe not competing for number one, but a respected national participant on the national football scene.

Any coach who wins 2 NCs in 5 years should receive serious consideration.

I think Howard and JJ were certainly HOF worthy. It doesn't help though that record away from UM is undistinguished, as was Howard's.

Alot of Players that Won 2 NCs for Erickson were JJs recruits that Butch closed the deal on...thats irrefutable...
You could say that about the kids on the 87 team that were recruited by Howard. He gave full credit to JJ right after the OB game by saying "somebody had to coach them."

My recollection is that Howard was in the stadium for that game doing the color on the network radio broadcast.

I think a better debate would be who were the worst coaches we’ve had
I missed most of the '70's so I wouldn't know. When I first came into Miami football consciousness as a young kid Gus had already been coach for a number of years....and would be for another decade. I remember a lot complaining back then about Gus. We were mostly top 20 caliber, occasionally top 10. People still were not satisfied.

All the coaches pre-Gus were 1940's and earlier. Gus had a role in the great Army offenses of the 1940s. Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside -- Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard. And QB Arnold Tucker (played at UM before Army).

Gus was a top assistant to Army's legendary coach Earl Blaik.

I think Gus came right to UM from Army where he helped develop option offenses. Before that, Gus was head coach at VPI (now Virginia Tech).

Three of four if you include the stolen ND game. IMO, he gets it because he raised things to another level, made the U the U.
I don't charge the ND loss against JJ but TN and PSU out-coached him and he failed to adjusted even when psu used same gameplan as TN. I have no problem with him on top because he made us hated and that was very nice. Plus he gave us 2 NCs from the kids he and Butch left behind and oh, he gave us Butch too.

1. JJ
2. Howard
3. Dennis - only because of 2 NC
4. Butch
5. Gustafson
6. Harding

Yeah..but at the end you have to win..it’s not automatic at all. So Dennis didn’t just win one..he won two over 6 years and very easily could’ve had another..He modernized Miami’s offense a one back scheme... something not seen at the collegiate level Therefore he belongs in the top 3. That’s irrefutable. There’s no guarantee that’ Butch would’ve built what he built AND sustained it..but off the roster he built he belongs 4th. Ericksons teams didn’t fall off after Jimmys guys left.

The 1993-1994 Miami teams were nothing special. And had Erickson stayed longer (and had to deal with the probation he brought on), that wouldn’t have been rock bottom under him.

Miami football was largely irrelevant until the 1980s.

That’s the #1 thing that most of CIS fails to comprehend. There’s a false belief that the last 15 years or so have been a “down period” for Miami football, when in reality it’s not like the current period is that much different than the pre-1980s days. Miami football history is basically almost continuous mediocrity, with a nice 20-25 year span thrown in there.

I really don’t think Miami football will be that much different in 30 years than it is now. I wonder if people are still seriously going to talk about the U eventually coming back then.

The 94 team was nothing Special??...They could easily have Won the NC if 3/4 of the DL weren't hurt or banged up against Nebraska...and STILL almost beat them...
As far as your comment about Erickson....if he had stayed??...Lol...MFer ran a 4.2 outta Hecht in Jan 95.....he lost complete control of team....Kids were running amok...Drinking till 4 a.m day before playing Bama in 93....No discipline whatsoever, on top of Lazy and deplorable recruiting from 90-94....How tf can you go from Erickson & Torretta...too Frank Costa?....You Win 2 NCs in your 1st 3yrs...and your *** busts out Costa in yr 4??....Jesus H Christ....

Schnelly and Johnson are easily 1 and 2.

Starting at #3-eh, I don’t really know how you rank.

Erickson at #1 is a joke.

Seems to me that despicable Penn State would’ve been awarded the MNC in ‘94 had Miami beaten Nebraska. They were undefeated and beat Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

But to say 94 wasn't anything Special is ridiculous....Whipped Defending NC FSUs *** as well....
