Toney (a positive thread)

He is not a guy that was advertised as being fast.

"You know #10 really ain't that fast"

"So why doesn't anybody ever catch him."

The physical skills don't jump off, but the kid's smarts and vision and shiftiness are unreal. The most impressive run may have been the one that got called back. It felt like FSU's entire D was around him and he eluded everyone to get into the EZ (albeit called back). How he did that I don't know, other than his feel for the game is second to none.
See this is what I used to believe because it’s what I was told. Don’t watch a lot of high school film and don’t live in FL to go to the games, so I relied on the consensus around here.

But after five games, I have to say the physical skills absolutely jump off. And every single game, at that.

Now, stature wise, I would agree. But that just makes it even crazier. I had no idea he could pull away from guys like he is doing. And he’ll juke you out of your Jordans.

Somebody compared him to Duke Johnson, and I think that’s totally appropriate. I’ve seen enough. He’s a big play and touchdown waiting to happen. Can take it to the house on any given play.

In other words, if we had the old grassy alien emoji, that’s how I would refer to him from now on. I’ll settle for 👽.

I know you’re a data guy. He’s the definition of an outlier. Watched the game yesterday with a buddy with whom I played junior high ball 3 decades ago and with whom I’ve watched thousands of football scenarios. We couldn’t stop talking about how he does these tiny little things that are usually done by old veterans. Just watch how he fields punts. I wish him nothing but health.
I'm not a foot ball nerd like either of you two. I prefer to watch the ball & just enjoy the game but Toney draws my eyes whether he's got the ball or isn't even being targeted. He makes me appreciate him as a player. He's football brilliant.

He’s a special young man, just watch him every play. He’s always busting his butt.
Even more impressive when he speaks, got his head on right.
His parents should be proud. He was raised right.

Take Malachi's mental abilities, his physical talent, his intangibles and nurturing from an excellent support system.

And then place that person in an historic football incubator like SoFla and you get generational players like a Toney or an RBJ

He can see the whole field in 4D without looking. He knows where guys are, where they are going to be, where he wants them and how to get them there.

If he was 5-6 inches taller, he wouldn't be Jeremiah Smith he'd be a Cam Ward level QB.
It took me a while to understand that the Wide Receiver Position is probably one of the most mentally intensive in football. Maybe second only to QB. Being able to see the field and reading coverages to find gaps to get open is everything at the higher levels. It's why so many great specimens with great 40 times flame out and never really reach expectations. And why a lot of your wes welker/danny amendola/julian edelman types do so well. Even Jerry Rice wasn't the fastest guy.

Agree. He even kinda contradicts himself by saying Mali's suddenness is unreal. Thats a physical attribute. I, like you, assume he meant measurable. But he is physically impressive.

Dude is dominating guys taller & heavier than him as a blocker. I worry about his size (unjustifiably at this point) & him getting hurt but every time there is a scrum, he emerges unblemished with bodies lying all around him.

this is under-discussed (though, fair enough because his play as a receiver is unreal). it's incredible to basically feel zero stress on punt return with a true freshman fielding every one.

I disagree. In fact, I think it's why he was a 3 star or whatever. I bet if he ran a 40, he's not a 4.3 guy. He may not even be a 4.4 guy. IMO, he doesn't have the speed or quickness or physical stature. But he's got a feel for the game so athletic skills be damned. And its not a knock. Everyone talks about Jerry Rice, who likely never ran a 4.4 but no one ever caught him from behind either. So there are intangibles at play here.

A true freshman playing in games of this magnitude and performing like he does is pretty special.

I hear you, and maybe we’re saying the same thing. At the end of the day, on the field, he’s elite. And that’s all that matters.

My biggest “worry” was the intangibles we lost with Cam and X

Who would be the dog in the WR room? If you knew Jojo you knew it wouldn’t be him. So I was a little concerned

Well that’s all over with. Him and CJ are dogs. Beck is a leader.

He Is such a dude and has such a bright future. I think he will probably only be able to be at Miami for 2 to 3 years because the pros are going to want him bad the way he's going.

What's cool about him is also the time that he spent signing autographs hanging around the fans after the game and then his interview.

He comes across as a straight up sincere, honest, mellow yet also motivated young man that could be one of Ziggy Marley's kids. And Bob is his grandpa. I say this in one of the most sincere compliments I could give.
