Time for a Serious Discussion

After listening to their player interviews and there are multiple. They are overly confident. Must be getting that from Elko.

The last time Elko was overly confident we destroyed them on national TV (ND 17).

For some reason I’ve been ultra relaxed going into this game. Same feeling heading into Pitt.

I think our guys are focused and ready to HSBDTS.

My one concern… where are thy going to line up Howell? Over Bell or Mauigoa? Bell is good but this might be his biggest test besides what he sees in Greentree

Spying/containing Reed (keeping him in the pocket) and Beck being accurate with the ball and staying away from major mistakes. Those are the 2 keys to the game. We're successful with those, we win.

Let’s put the Kool-Aid down for a second and have a rational conversation.

We all love this program.

We are all confident in this team.

But I’m going to stop listening to my heart for a second and give my brain a chance to jump into the discourse.

What concerns us about this matchup? I’ll go first….

1) Our LBs ability to cover their WRs underneath.

2) Keeping Reed contained in the pocket. Broken plays have been our enemy before. The ND and SMU games come to mind. Even the FSU game in the 4th quarter.

3) Beck zeroing in on Toney. Elko is too smart of a coach to allow one player to beat him. His scheme will be structured to neutralize Toney’s impact. Carson has to be patient, go through his progressions, and find the open receiver.

4) WRs other than Toney creating separation. With Toney most likely being bracketed, can CJ take advantage of 1-on-1 opportunities? What about Marion? Mark my words: to win this game, we’re going to need a couple of big time, contested catches from someone other than Toney.

5) Pringle in pass protection. Can he handle what Elko throws at us in 3rd and long situations? We’re going to have to trust him. You can’t only bring him in if we’re running the ball — that’s too predictable.

6) Pre-snap penalties. If we can’t avoid more than one or two of these over the course of the game, we’re probably in bad shape. Getting behind the chains hurts the type of offense Dawson wants to call.

What other things worry you guys?

History tells me Mario teams off of bye weeks have often come out a bit sluggish and uncoordinated.

I’m really hopeful this team has turned the corner and can pick up right where they left off the last 4 weeks. Plus it’s a playoff game not some mid-level conference opponent, and Mario teams tend to show up well in big games. But it’s definitely something on my mind…

Miami has played very well against teams that have commanded our full attention, with Pitt being the most recent. I probably would have been more concerned vs Duke or Virginia in the ACC Championship game as opposed to this. I think these kinds of opponents get our boys up like Viagra.

History tells us Mario’s teams come ready to play in big games. He’s 5-6 vs ranked teams as HC here. 7-6 at Oregon. 0-6 at FIU. To be fair we’ll remove FIU from the equation.

So he’s an even 12-12 as a P4 coach. Nearly every game has been close minus, the two games vs Utah his last year at Oregon and the ****show that was Miami year 1. Even year two at Miami he played the 12th, 4th and 9th teams to 10, 7 & 7 point losses. Since then, zero rivalry losses and one ranked loss to ISU in the pop tart bowl, which we’d probably have won if Cam played the whole game and 4 ranked(at the time of kickoff) wins this year.

Odds are the game is close. This is a veteran team who has been given new life. I don’t see them starting sluggish. Maybe I’m drinking the kool aid but I don’t see it. I think it’s more likely we come out hot and then falter. Based on TAMU’s performances this year. They tend to start slow and come back hot at the end. Most of their games they were either hardly ahead or losing at halftime. It’s imperative we play pedal to the floor for 60 minutes. Not 30 and then hold on for dear life.

It’s no way this team come out flat this game. No even a possibility!! The entire country watching, big time opponent, packed house etc.

We faced 6 mobile QBs this year. They totaled 74 yards rushing.
I was coming here to make this exact post. This defense has proven that it can handle running QBs in addition those running QBs who have trouble throwing under pressure have thrown Miami multiple interceptions.

Our offense, mainly the skill positions and the center
I don’t trust Beck. Our pass catchers are middle of the road, outside of Toney.

I think it all comes down to the version of the offense we'll be running.

The slow paced, tuff and phyzical O we started the season with vs the one that prioritized space and pace that we ended the season with.
I laugh about the tuff n fizical stuff but I always say it helps you win games like this while getting you clipped in lesser games.. Im perfectly fine wit that game plan, sprinkled in with malicat, a couple shots like fleaflicker on aggressive safety play..

Kinda like fsu game first 3 qtrs..

I would be shocked if we don’t see them try some misdirection in the run game and look to borrow from VT where they had success.

I think we need to limit the heavy stacked LOS on D and force them to dink and dunk.
Our worst matchup is obviously their WRs plus space.
Keep QB in pocket and go from there

Good stuff

Points 1 and 3 concern me the most

Seems like, for once, the Dawson is throwing some things at the opposing defense that they haven't seen before. Toney gives him options most teams don't have and makes it a lot harder to restrict his touches during a game.
