SOC Michael T Ernst

From Cohasset, Massachusetts...

Enlisted in the Navy in 2009, went through BUD/s class 286 & got his trident first go round. He was with Seal Team 2 for 3 years until he would Green & get drafted into TACDevron 5 (Silver Squadron), where he would serve in DEVGRU for 10 years.

Unfortunately, he recently passed away back on February 19th 2023, while conducting a HALO jump during military free-fall parachute training at an Airbase in Marana Arizona’s.

He is the 5th Navy SEAL to die during a training exercise over just the last 2 years, many SEALS have spoken about the old adage that more SEALS die during training than they do on the Battlefield. An untimely & unfortunate way to go, but glory to every one of those Warriors who represented their country & fought alongside their brothers valiantly in every task upon which they were called.

CWO4 Boyd Renner,

From Pagosa Springs Colorado...

Boyd enlisted in the Navy in 1988 & after graduating BUD/s he served at SEAL Team 2 for 4 years. Then went on to Green & got drafted to TACDevron 4 where he would serve 23 years at DEVGRU. He earned every rank from E-1 to E-9, and then he transitioned to Chief Warrant Officer in 2010. Boyd served for 28 years total in the Navy before retiring in November of 2016, after having transitioned onto TACDevron 1 as the primary advisory strategist & SIGNIT specialist.

He completed 10 tours in Afghanistan, 2 in Iraq, as well as deployments to Albania, Sarajevo & Yemen. In 2014, he graduated with honors from Saint Leo University with a degree in Business Admiration with a focus on technology management & got his Masters in project management at Penn State University.

He was also apart of Operation Red Wings 2; he was an E-8 Senior Troop Chief at the time, & was apart of one of the many RECCE team elements that were looking for Luttrell & attempting to recover the rest of the guys from the initial QRF who had been shot down out of their MH-47 by RPG. A lot of people forget that it wasn’t just Murphy, Dietz & Axelson who unfortunately died during the mishap of Red Wings; 8 more SEALS & 8 160th SOAR aviators & crewmen were killed in the wreckage as well on the attempted recovery of the Seal Team 10 recon team that had been ambushed.

Along with the valiant & heroic 2nd/3rd Batt Rangers who were securing the ridge-lines in the surrounding areas of the crash site scouring around 1200-2000 meters searching & tracking a signal of one of the initial QRF element SEALS who was still alive at the time, they would go on for about 2-3 weeks recovering valuable intel as well as the bodies of all the fallen Warriors.

Once they received word where Marcus was, HQ Command split the search elements in half & had the Rangers, SF & PJ’s go get Marcus, while RECCE team that Boyd was leading along with another RECCE Ranger platoon element were sent to go after the initial target, Ahmad Shah. They obviously didn’t catch him (and wouldn’t until 3 years later), but they were able to capture/kill some of his Militiamen that were responsible for the ambush & downing of the MH-47.

His was also apart of the raid on the Jalalabad Airport in 05 & has been rumored to be the infamous “Red” who was accredited for killing UBL on the Neptune Spear mission.

SCPO Kevin Houston, from West Hyannisport, Mass.

He enlisted in the Navy January 1995 & after passing BUD/s class 282 in May of 1999, was assigned to SEAL Team 2. After 4 deployments with Team 2, he went to Green in December 05 & after passing OTC was drafted into the Legendary TACDEVRON 3 (Gold Squadron). He would go on 6 more deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan & HOA rising to the rank of E-8 SOCS Senior Chief Special Warfare Operator.

Was most notably known for being in on a famous raid against an HVT & fighting valiantly while being ambushed in Afghanistan, vastly outnumbered & held the rear of his unit’s position & saved the lives of multiple teammates.

- On the night of 26 November 2008, Chief Houston and his Joint fire team came under significant enemy fire from several insurgents while conducting a raid targeting a key Taliban leader. CPO Houston led his team's response, immediately returning and suppressing the enemy fire. During the engagement, enemy combatants were using a tunnel within the compound to attempt to flank the assault force. CPO Houston realized this grave threat to his teammates and led a high-risk clearance of the tunnel. As they cleared the tunnel, Houston was wounded but continued leading his team on the exfil & neutralizing the enemy combatants while securing the unit's flank. Largely due to his intrepid leadership & bravery on this objective, his unit removed numerous enemies from the battlefield and eliminated a Taliban bombing cell.
(This mission earned him a Bronze Star with Valor)

They were going after Mullah Najibullah a.k.a Abu Tayeb, who was responsible for the kid-napping of an American journalist David Rohde, that also resulted in death of 3 US Army Sergeants from 425th Infantry from F Company in June of 08, & then was responsible for the shooting down of a UH-60 just a month before this incident took place. And on that same night, Abu orchestrated a car bombing on the US embassy in Kabul, that’s why TACDev-5 (Gold) was hunting him down & were close to capturing him...

He was also personally responsible for the capture & killing of several high ranking members of Al-Shabaab in Kismayo & Barawa. And that’s not even scratching the surface of all the combat operations in the Kunar, Paktika & Ghazni provinces that he was apart of & pivotal in the success of completing objectives...

He was one of the most tactically proficient Operators in Gold history.

Unfortunately, he would end tragically passing away just 3 years later on Aug. 6th 2011, in the Wardak province, Afghanistan, from the result of a Taliban combatant shooting down the CH-47D Chinook that the SEAL Team was on while conducting an operation with a RPG. This more famously known as the tragedy Extortion 17; where 38 (30 American Military personnel) people on board the Aircraft were killed in the crashed, including 17 Navy SEAL DEVGRU Operators, 2 AFSOC PJ’s, 1 AFSOC CCT, a pilot, 2 crewmen, 1 Reserve Pilot & 1 National Guard crewmen, 7 Afghan National SF’s & an interpreter.

Operation Anaconda

Special operations teams from the AFO detachment led by LTC Blaber were to provide on-location reconnaissance in the Shahi-Kot Valley for the operation. Task Force Bowie: AFO (made up of a 45-man reconnaissance unit Delta and augmented by selected DEVGRU operators recce specialists, combat controllers and supported by ISA's technical experts.

Delta LTC Pete Blaber ruled out any helicopter infiltration of AFOs into the area as not to alert the terrorists in the valley; in addition to AFOs conducting reconnaissance of routes into and around the valley on modified Polaris ATVs, two teams (codenamed India and Juliet) with Delta recce operators, and Air Force combat controllers climbed high into the mountains of the Shahikot. On February 28, three AFO teams were covertly infiltrated into the valley, one codenamed Juliet was made up of 5 Delta operators, a combat controller, and a signals intelligence specialist from the ISA, entered the valley on ATVs from the north, driving through the night reaching a covert hide on the eastern side of the valley. Another team codenamed India, composed of three Delta operators, a combat controller and an attached ISA operator walked into the valley to a hide in the southwest of the valley, known as the "Fish Hook". The final team was known as Mako 31 and was composed of three SEALs from DEVGRU Red Team, a USAF Combat Controller and a US Navy EOD operator. They infiltrated the area on foot via the southern edge of the valley to set up an observation post on a terrain feature known as 'The Finger.' All three teams were tasked with confirming enemy strengths and dispositions including antiaircraft emplacements, providing terminal guidance for air support both prior to and during the insertion of conventional forces. AFO teams called in continuous airstrikes on al-Qaeda positions.

In the late evening of 3 March, LTC Pete Blaber received notice from BG Gregory Trebon, commander of TF11, that two teams commanded by Lieutenant Commander Vic Hyder were to be inserted. The two SEAL teams, Mako 30 and Mako 21, planned to establish an observation point. One team would move to the peak of Takur Ghar. Originally, an insertion point 1,400 metres (1,500 yd) east of the peak was identified, but due to uncontrollable time constraints, the SEALs of Mako 30 were forced into an insertion to the peak itself. Even though all overhead imagery showed no signs of life on the peak of Takur Ghar, LCDR Hyder gave the team final guidance per SOP that if any signs were seen, mission would be aborted.

Blaber was notified that the SEALs were forced to insert on the peak in order to fulfill the order to infil Mako 30 that night. An AC-130H Spectre, reconnoitered the peak, and, seeing no enemy activity, declared the mountain top secure. It was then called away to support other troops before the Chinook arrived.

At approximately 03:00, the Chinook attempted to land atop the mountain. As they approached, the pilots and SEALs observed tracks in the snow and other signs of recent human activity. As they discussed a possible mission abort, the helicopter was met with effective RPG fire. Two RPGs slammed into the helicopter, shutting down one of its engines, the electric system, and the hydraulic systems and causing PO First Class Neil C. Roberts to fall out of the open ramp. Roberts survived at least thirty minutes, expending all of his ammunition and killing an untold number of enemy fighters, before he was shot and killed at close range.

PO First Class
Neil C. Roberts was later found mutilated and nearly decapitated... ON THE AFTERNOON of March 6, 2002, Lt. Cmdr. Vic Hyder and more than two dozen operators from SEAL Team 6 boarded two Chinook helicopters...

They were conducting the operation in the Suwayda village of the Al-Ghandoura township in the Jarabulus district in Northeastern section of the Aleppo Governorate.

They captured Abu-Talib Al-Safrani who’s brother is one of the top commanders in the Suquor al-Sham Brigade which is under SILF & is allied with Tahrir al-Sham.

The 160th SOAR unit had 3 out of their 8-manned Heli unit shot at; one CH-47, a UH-60 & at least 6 MD 500’s. But none of them was shot down, they were just shot at on before they hit the LZ. But once they landed & conducted the infil raid they killed 3 armed militants & captured 2 others. Ibrahim Sheik Musa Al-Ma’an (aka Al-Maklab) was the Senior leader captured along with 2 of his operatives.
