Thoughts on the UF game and weekend

Beck grew up in Florida, he’s played football in rainy, humid, messy conditions countless times. To me it’s a bad game and I think he’ll be fine as he gets more reps after the injury layoff, but I’m not buying that we can chalk up the struggles against UF to rain. Beck not being fully sharp and the lack of separation/elite talent at WR are why the passing game has struggled at times imo.
Hard agree on the WR talent. I love Toney and Daniels, but neither are plus athletes. Moore isn't quite ready. Marion isn't a finished product. Johnson is fine. Trader is whatever Trader is.

I am not saying we cannot win with those guys being competent instead of gamebreakers, but against athletic secondaries, they aren't going to shine very bright.

I was going to start a new thread about this but I'll just do it here. Through the first 4 games I think Miami is teetering on being the best team in college football. The question becomes can they improve and make it there or do what we've seen for decades and stand still or regress.

Notre Dame
Up 21-7 with 5:00 minutes left in the 3rd. Miami can't complete a 3 and 1 and punts the ball away. Notre Dame goes down and scores a TD. That drive is the championship drive for Miami. You go down and score a TD or even kick a FG, taking time off the clock, and the game is not only over but it's a blowout. So close to not just winning but absolutely dominating. One drive. So close.

Florida
3rd quarter, Miami is up 13-0 with 10:00 left. We have the ball at midfield. Brown scores a TD that gets called back. Terrible, I know. But still, we end up punting. A TD there and the game is over 60% of the way through. Not just a win, but domination. The narrative for Canes fans is completely different. So close. One drive.

These are two good teams in UF and Notre Dame, one is very good, that Miami had the opportunity to blow out. That's why I say they're teetering on being the best team in college football. That extra gear they need to complete those drives is what would make them unstoppable. I hope Miami does something they haven't done in the past few decades and that's get better as the season goes on. If they can get there nobody is touching this team.

The best teams throughout sports history recognize the moments where you can absolutely put a team away, not just at the end, but before it even gets to that point. Good teams win close games. Great teams win by the 3rd quarter. Miami has to learn that skill.
on this point, if this team puts a full 4 quarters together, there are maybe 3 teams in the country that would be able to go toe to toe with em (Ohio State, Oregon and UGA)

The bomb was to Moore.

His issues have consistently been what happens when he throws off platform or needs to move off his spot. At Georgia last year and in glimpses here. I don't think it's solely a weather issue, though I'm sure that had something to do with some of those very poor throws.
Saban talked about this on Gameday - at Bama they always tried to get Beck to move his feet to get him uncomfortable and induce poor throws.

I think not having spring is affecting him a little bit. But I think this offense won’t hit its stride till Louisville. But for now Physicality is the hardest thing to sceme for. Defenses now what’s coming and they still can’t stop it. Continue to dominate the trenches against FSU and after the second bye starting slinging that **** against these weak secondaries.

Didn't watch Gameday or see his comments, but I've commented on this a lot going back to the time we were talking about getting him. People tried to make it like I said he sucked, but it's just reality that QBs have flaws, and he has struggled with this area of the game. I personally value this area of a QB's game very highly (not quite up to processing and release), so I've hoped to see it improve. When you talk about "top QBs," I think they need to make some plays off their spot. Most defenses are too fast and good now. We'll see how much of it was weather impacting his output. Rather be in the position we are in right now than last year's (with a defense unable to defend basic motion).

I agree with this. I don't think it's only rain. It was my main concern for the entire offense all off-season, really. Do we have elite separators at WR, and can the pass catchers gel with Beck in time to really win big?

We're 4-0, and we've now been practicing football for almost 2 months. We have a bye week to do nothing but generate more cohesion. We have 1 game in the next 3 weeks, albeit it's looking like it'll be a REALLY big one, provided the criminoles get by Appletini U this Friday.

So, we've survived what I'm hoping is an "acclimation period". It's time to start clicking for real in the passing game. I really, more than anything, was saying the field and weather was much worse for UiF than it was for ND, so are some of the troubles attributed to that? And I want to see him on a nice clear, dry night. ****, even USF had a long delay. We haven't had a perfect football day/night yet for any of the 3 FBS games. Go drill this **** to death for the next 12 days, and come out clicking against fsu. IMO this UVA game tells us a lot about them.

UVA is 29th in Adjusted EPA/play, and that's mostly generated by their offense. 11th in offensive Adj/EPA per play, and they're pretty balanced. 20th in EPA per rush, and 27th in EPA per drop back. Let's see how the fsu defense handles that, because we're coming up there the next week with a lot more talent and the best line in the country.

Not allowed on this fan site to point out issues we'll face with Beck...so I'll just say:
This ☝️

I'm so excited to hear Lyle may be coming back. I think he's the best home run threat of the 3 RBs.

Lightfoot is fun to watch. He's understandably behind 3 and 4, but when he's in, you notice him. Excited for his future.

Also, that lineup with Bain, Blount, Lightfoot and Mesidor is hellraisers!

Only cold water to throw on this game was the pass game was ***, against a UF defense that had a bunch of injuries, and UFs offense is complete *** so not much you can really take from that aside from our Dlines performance.

We are 4 weeks into the season and I legit don’t think we have had 10 total passes attempted on our DBs further than 10 air yards…

And I don’t expect that to change too much against FSU either except for a few really deep shots. Louisville will be the game our Pass Defense gets truly tested

Im all for celebrating the win, idc how it happens just win. I think we get the best of both worlds however... The team was fed rat poison all week, if we go in and dog walk them that only heightens. Now there is some tape that I think has a lotttt of coaching moments. Dumb pre-snap penalties, teh fact they were missing like 7 starters on defense and STILL had the game close, while our OL was dominant, and we physically beat them down, there were some holes and room for more dominance for sure. I think it was the first drive in the fourth quarter, beck got pressured and had to have a weird little dump off to fletcher that fell incomplete on 3rd and long and we punted, but give Beck a clean pocket there is a wideeeeee open daniels down the right hash, legit walk in 70 yd TD so I think it could be beneficial there is so much to clean up and a lot of the media buzz will die down with us on a bye week.

edit, I found the full game replay here: go to the 1:50:00 mark:

but the screenshots speak for themself:

At the snap, basic alignment showing pressure

2.png
left side runs a stunt, one guy drops out so basic 4 man rush, coop is lost, Samson got beat inside and Brock is about to get beat, but peep daniels at the top right, that S is about to come flying down towards lofton running an out....

3.png

Beck was still able to muscle this ball out for an INC to Fletch but LOOOOOK at daniels now at the top right. I am sorry but a 4 man depleted front should not do this to our OL in the 4th quarter of (at the time) a close game scoreboard wise.

I know, I mentioned in the OP that’s where I got it. Dead on.
I feel like this analogy might be much more appropriate for FSU than UF. We already knew UF was soft and not a real contender. FSU has beat up two high school teams yet calls our SOS weak. They haven’t played an actual physical team yet. The knockout punch is coming…

He's a distributor, not an improvisor. That isn't a criticism, just a fact.

Tom Brady is the same.

Beck thrives on open read-fire! So long as that happens, Miami's pass game is going to hum.

He does have to work on his accuracy/timing on checkdown throws. He's gonna get somebody killed or a pick 6.

Thru 4 games though...4-0...not to shabby...

Go Canes.

All in on Beck, but Saturday night was worrisome. Seemed rattled at times & accuracy was a mess. WR struggled getting separation was also a factor. Held breath every time we put ball in the air late in game. Hopefully just one bad game.

We are going to have more rainy nights.. hopefully not one in Tallahassee in two weeks

Appreciate the write up.

I believe Beck’s game was a blip. If you watch the all 22 of the game you can see where his big game experience and poise shined through. Some of his decisions not throw kept us in a position to win. Perfect example being the pump on the completed throw to Toney (I believe). It’s a pick 6 at a vital point in the game without the vision and pump.
where did you find the all 22?
