Best thing is you didn't really hear dudes' named mentioned at all. ZP took a bad angle one one play and Toure had the one bust, but it wasn't like we had guys getting picked on over and over. They had two deep passes that I remember: the bust and the great diving WR catch (that was well covered). Other than that everything was a quick out or screen. Gameplan was clearly to not get beat deep with an unknown at QB, but I'd venture to say we''ll be more aggressive against weaker offenses, which should give our DL more time to rush weaker lines.I really liked how Heatherman simplified the coverages and let their athleticism take over. Less thinking more reacting.
At one point in the game, Beck was 12 for 12. He was in an absolute groove, and then we went up 21-7, mailed it in. "they didn't trust our passing offense yet", is just complete dumb rationale. Spend the entire offseason waiting for this particular QB, give him $4m, watch him make 12 straight completions, go up 21-7, have a chance to make an emphatic statement on national tv against CFP finalist, 25-3 as a starter, and in the conversation with the best QBs in the country..........- We obviously went into a shell late in the game. The criticisms are fair. My personal sense is they just didn’t trust our passing offense yet. This is Game 1 against an elite secondary and a team that finished Top 10 in takeaways. On our end, Beck just started throwing in mid-summer and we were playing two true freshmen. I think if this game was in Week 5, we would’ve put the ball in Beck’s hands more often.
I think it’s more about the receivers than Beck. What happens when one of Notre Dame’s veteran corners gets away with pulling one of our teenage WRs jerseys, tips the ball up and it gets picked? Or if they are just off on their timing with Beck due to lack of reps?At one point in the game, Beck was 12 for 12. He was in an absolute groove, and then we went up 21-7, mailed it in. Spare me. It's Mario and Dawson. That's the modus operandi for them. And it almost, almost cost Miami the game. January 19th is a delusion of grandeur if this continues the rest of the year.
I'm wondering how much of that shifts with Feld out the door.If this team can continue playing at this level then we can 100% win a national championship. Unfortunately, our team has always lost steam as the season goes on. Hopefully we turn a corner in that regard
Brother, the rationale makes ZERO sense. You said so in your article, but then. you took a different conclusion.I think it’s more about the receivers than Beck. I’m not saying I agree. But I can understand the rationale in this particular game.
It’s more about the timing. He doesn’t have that many banked reps with these receivers and they are mostly young. We're playing the best secondary on our schedule and maybe the country. Elite in terms of takeaways. It’s Week 1. One mistake could cost the game.Brother, the rationale makes ZERO sense. You said so in your article, but then. you took a different conclusion.
Beck: at one point 12 of 12. Miami waited just for him to enter portal. Gave him $4m. He looked patient and aware in the pocket. Only pressured on 4 drop backs. Not one pass was close to being intercepted. He is 25-3 as a starter in the SEC! He has a tremendous arm, and completely brilliant as a QB. He protects the ball and wins games. Up 21-7 and then just stop playing? Come on man. That's who Mario and Dawson are and if this continues, we will not make it to January 19th, ****, maybe not even Charlotte. Stepping on the brakes almost.....almost......cost Miami the game.
Do you agree with that?
Brother, do you agree that we almost lost the game because of that approach? It’s more about the timing. He doesn’t have that many banked reps with these receivers and they are mostly young. Personally, I thought there were opportunities for low-risk passes. But I was worried about their secondary, too.
We did. But we won the game.Brother, do you agree that we almost lost the game because of that approach?

How accurate should we realistically expect Carter Davis to be? It's clear his range is functionally unlimited, but the guess with a guy like this is he might as well be wild thing out there before he got glasses.
Yup, I took Dawson's Monday presser comment about ND's secondary: (paraphrasing) "I thought they were really good before the game, and as the game went on I thought they were even better" to actually mean, "those guys are good, but holy **** the refs are letting them get away with murder (and I'm going to consider that fact when calling plays up 2 scores in the second half)"I think it’s more about the receivers than Beck. What happens when one of Notre Dame’s veteran corners gets away with pulling one of our teenage WRs jerseys, tips the ball up and it gets picked? I'm with @P-Tizzle on this one. Outside of the td passes, Beck was making safe throws and not putting the ball in harm's way. This was a massive over correction from last year's Syracuse game and it almost (I stress, ALMOST) led to the exact same outcome. As has been said already, Mario is really good in these games and has proven that over his career. But he's got to find the right balance between aggressiveness and being conservative.
Beck didn't come to Miami to hand off the ball. He saw what Cam did and he is going to try and put up the same type of numbers, even if he has to change the play call. Let's see next game how this unfolds.Brother, do you agree that we almost lost the game because of that approach?
Who cares how old he is? His knowledge of the game and his ability to read defenses is literally not normal for anybody that age. Also, the slot WR is always going to excel in Dawsons offense.the major issue for this team's ceiling is that your offense can only be so good if your best WR is a true freshman slot receiver, regardless of how good that player is. Toney looks like someone who will finish top 5 in career catches at UM, but a 5' 10" 17 year old can only shoulder so much of the load. there was little to no evidence from Sunday that any other WR on the team can consistently get open on 3rd and long -- against most teams that shouldn't matter but if we're talking about the playoffs that is the number one thing that needs to be figured out moving forward.
however it's been almost 25 years since we have looked this physically dominant on both lines of scrimmage. the 2017 team had some really good players on the DL but they all topped out at as fringe NFL players and got pushed around by Clemson in the ACC title game. Mario is worth every penny for that fact alone.
