Thoughts on Miami's First (and Hopefully Only) Loss of the Season (For Non-Hysterical People)

We're in the playoff discussion for the 2nd year in a row (3rd time overall - Richt had us close with Rosier). We haven't been consistently relevant in over 20 years. We could make the championship and lose, and these dudes would want to fire Mario. I think they forgot how hard it is to get a decent coach that does enough to even keep you relevant.
I honestly don’t love Mario as a coach. He’s a great at constructing a team. I don’t know who we could get that is an upgrade over him. Who knows if we will ever be fully back. But it could be a lot worse I suppose. We definitely need more creativity on offense.

Pedo just fired their coach and they play a much harder schedule than Miami every year. And they are fresh off a playoff bid. What has Mario done in 3.5 years? He’s one loss away from missing the playoffs and the ACC championship game.

Mario gave the team the whole week off over the bye. He said so. All they did was non-contact walkthroughs and film study.

It showed today. We didn’t play physical. Tackling and blocking were terrible and the pass game was out of sync

Couple of passes in the middle

1. Daniels got smacked
2. Threw behind Toney who was double covered
3. Couple 2 yard completions (One to Marion for sure)

Regardless, I've never coached higher than summer league/high school and am confident that I could scheme to shut down that OC
Missed Daniels on the crosser in the red zone when he had two guys wide open for a walk in TD

Switch playcallers and Beck doesn't throw a single pick and Miami blows Louisville out of the ******* water with relative ease.

Dawson's a glutton for running into loaded boxes and passing into heavy 2 high safety coverages.

Notice how Brohm made everything easy for Miller? Easy slants, curls, hitches, RPOs, trick plays. Kept our defense on its heels with easy reads one read calls.

Not Dawson. 3 & 4? Dawson calls 4 Vertical routes where the checkdown option is outside the numbers making it a **** 20 yard throw while QB under pressure. We coulda simply employed the same **** game plan as louisville and blew them out. Nope. Gotta go air raid. Gotta go vertical. Been doing it since he started here. ***** super annoying. Cam Ward covered up a lot of his ineptitude. Dude does not have a consistent feel for the game and when to adjust his calls based upon his players execution or lack thereof.

Ive made up my mind that Mario will just drop games to coaches who can match his toughness approach and add to it with good gameplanning and risk taking.

All we can do is pray that our athletes will overcome the ineptitude. Cause it is what it is. We aint going undefeated. Coaches like Brohm and Key will have Mario's number unless our athletes overcome.
Well said brother. But I'll shorten it for you Dawson Suuuucks.

What’s worse than losing to unranked teams when you are in the top 5 back to back years? What’s worse than being a national joke every year? What’s worse than not taking a knee and ultimately lose? What’s worse than getting blown out at home by Middle Tennessee St? What’s worse than winning 5 games in 2022? Last coach to do that was Randy in 07.

Fair enough. Ive been saying it since TvD but hes, oddly got some fans on here and they love attacking me in defense of him for some reason so I have to provide detailed analysis in order for these guys to see my pov without thinking im just emotional

Cool story bro. Last I checked Miami being talked about the last two years is the 2nd and 3rd times in the last 20 years.

Change your handle to CaneTWAT
Miami is always talked about. We had great starts in 2009, 2013, 2016, 2017, and so forth.

The only difference under Mario is this time we're spending a lot of money.

Based on the play call where the INT was thrown, Mario was playing for the tie

He was just trying to get a few extra yards.

The reason I know this is because that was the play called coming out of a timeout. He looked over there right away and threw.

It wasn’t a check down and that is 100% on the head man for that call, especially with 2 timeouts.

Now Carson has to be better especially on that throw but once again, coaching malpractice.

It felt like Beck had pre-determined that he was going to pass that ball to Lofton for a quick catch and go out of bounds. That man did not even scan for the LB

Well, Miami's played with fire a bit this season, and the Canes finally got burned. #2 Miami loses a very close game to a good Louisville Team. Warning: this thread is for people who aren't completely hysterical. Seriously, people, get a grip. Here are some thoughts and takeaways on this team, as we look forward to next week.
  • This was - by far - Shannon Dawson's worst game as an OC in Miami. The offense was predictable, and he did absolutely nothing to disguise whether we were going to run or pass. Just a completely putrid performance. When Dawson is on, he's on. When he's not, he's worse than Patrick Nix. Just a terrible offensive game plan. Multiple opportunities to score, and went into a shell. The absence of a play action pass or anything else involving a semblance of creativity was astounding.

  • This run scheme needs to be revamped from the ground up. The fact that 95% of our run game is inside zone directed to the A gap is astounding. Teams have learned and seen the film: if you just collapse the center of our OL, our run game is negated. We need to throw in some pitches, outside runs, and counters. We have too talented an RB room to have the same vanilla run game.

  • Speaking of which, it was inexcusable that we didn't even try to get the run game going at the end of the game. Didn't even try to catch them sleeping. Just predictably stayed with the pass. If it doesn't work, we have a TO and time to try something else. Again, Dawson was atrocious.

  • Carson Beck had a TVD-level performance tonight. Just absolutely terrible throughout. He has an opportunity now to shake it off or crater. The choice is his. Dawson did absolutely nothing to help him, though. Beck also predetermined his targets wayyyyyyyy too much. It was just a terrible performance all around, and UL made plays all over the field. The fact that the intermediate passing game was working and we just went away from it for long stretches is just astounding.

  • Hats off to our defense. After completely ****ting the bed in the first two drives, they were stout for the rest of the game. They did everything they could to keep us in it. UL's O is too good to hold for all game. However, tackling was the worst it has been this season and the second level of our defense just kept getting gashed.

  • Our OL had its worst night of the season. Pass protection was fine, but our run blocking was absolutely terrible. A lot of that is scheme, but we just couldn't create any lanes. Additionally, and the biggest issue so far, is how many drive-killing pre-snap penalties we commit. It's inexcusable. Every game this year, save Bethune, we've had 1-2 drive killing pre-snap penalties. This needs to be fixed; teams are simulating the snap because they realize we have this bad tendency.

  • We have a good WR room. Malachi Toney is a superstar. He's going to be making big plays for years to come. Daniels and Marion did what they needed to tonight. Ultimately, it's almost always impossible to overcome four interceptions.

  • I remain astounded by Shannon Dawson's inability to use our TEs. When we do, we almost always have decent positive yardage. If we do not figure out a way to involve our TEs in our passing game, there's zero reason for any highly touted HS TEs or portal TEs to consider coming here.

  • Carter Davis, what a guy. Kicker was a huge concern coming into this season, and the guy picked up where the Borregales brothers left off. In close games, like today, a good kicker is an essential.

  • Rueben Bain gets hold on every play and never gets a call. For the most part, Refs nitpick us. But like Jimmy Johnson said, you gotta play well enough to make them a non-factor. I would like to see Mario get in their face more. There's a reason why Kirby and other coaches do it. Refs are more hesitant to throw a flag with a very ****ed off coach breathing down their neck. It's human nature.

  • Our secondary struggled in the intermediate passing game tonight. Too much cushion, not enough press. However, they still did enough to win. This L is not on them or is defense. It is squarely on our offense, specifically, our QB and OC.

  • Mario Cristobal has gotten a lot of flak for his gameday coaching abilities, for good reason. However, especially since 2023, Cristobal has been a far better gameday coach. Yes, he play's it too conservative at times, but sometimes it's damned if you do damned if you don't. If we go for the FG there and lose in 2OT, he gets criticized for being too conservative. If we go for the win but throw an INT, he still gets criticized. Cristobal deserves criticism for today's gameplan and flat performance coming off the bye. However, if you made a list of the reasons why we lost today, Cristobal's gameday coaching doesn't even make the top ten. He's not the reason Carson Beck threw four interceptions.

  • Ultimately, as terrible as our O was tonight, we were in a position to win this game. Sometimes, you just don't get the lucky bounce or play and it's not your night. Losing by 3 is far different than getting blown out or manhandled. The optics aren't terrible.

  • As tough as it is to hear right now, this team was never going to be undefeated. We don't have the depth or across-the-board talent/production yet. We knew an L was coming. This is a good UL team. All our goals, an ACC Championship and CFP Appearance are still in front of us. Hopefully, we can use this as a turning point in the season and go on the run. Maybe even get a shot at returning the favor to UL in the ACC Championship. We'll see what this team and program are made of over the next few weeks. But seriously, people, get a grip. This is a setback, but there's a clear path to our goals.
Agree with almost all of this except for the piece about our TEs. Arroyo was utilized just fine last year and you can argue that is because Arroyo is a freak, but I'd also argue that our current TE group is MID.

Lofton seems like a good football player but he lacks the physical attributes to be a stud and Baumann is a stiff.

We can use the TEs in certain situations to keep a defense on its toes, but if we are game-planning a big role for the TEs when we have better skill position talent literally everywhere else on the field, that is a mistake.

I agree. I wasn't huge on him as the selection when he came. I also think people have to keep in mind, there's typically only about 5 coaches consistenly in the top of the rankings. Everyone else goes in cycles until their coach gets fired because he can't get over the hump. I'm glad that we are setup to be consistenly in the picture. Just need a few breaks along the way. I don't want to go back to wondering if we'll have a bowl game.

As I said, he wasn't my top choice, but he does some things we haven't had in a long time.

1. Focused on the trenches - When was the last time we felt really good about our OL? It's not been often. If you have the best OL and DL, you always have the foundation of a good team.
2. He got them willing to spend. I know college football is a different environment compared to before he got here, but I'm not convinced they open up their wallets if it were someone else.
3. He's gotten rid of bad asst coaches and typically brought in an upgrade.

If we go 11-1 we’re in regardless.
I seriously don't think any of yall are paying attention to anything relating to the rest of CFB or the ACC teams this year if you think this.
UVA, GTech, Duke, and now Louisville due to tie breaker have a FAR easier path to the ACC CG than we do. The CFP will NOT have 3 ACC teams. It will be a very real struggle to even get 2 ACC teams into the CFP. If ND doesn't beat USC, we WILL end the season with 0 ranked wins. If we don't get into the ACCCG that means there is likely two ACC teams in the ACCCG with 1 or 0 (GTech) losses. Why would the Committe pick us over them without any ranked wins? Why would they pick Us over Louisville even if Louisville won out regular season and lost in the ACCCG? Why would the committe pick us over GTech if GTech wins out but lost in the ACCCG?....

Yall really don't see how bad this loss is. We MUST win the ACC now to get in imo.

You're not wrong, but let's see where Pedo is in 5 years. They might look like us before, still looking for a coach that can get them more than 8 wins while paying their last 2 coaches buyouts still. I'm fine with maintaining the 9-10 win coach who keeps us strong in the trenches, can recruit top talent, keeps us in the playoff picture and isn't a threat to use us as a stepping stone.

The one condition for me is if you know the guy coming in is guaranteed to get us over the hump (all the same strengths but better CEO/gameday coach) or if the current one starts to dip back in results. If I know we're getting a Dan Lanning or something, then fine, but not for the next maybe he's a hidden gem coach.
