Thoughts From the Bench Press: Clemson

This game does not depend on TVD as much as it depends on the Clemson D.

Clemson has talent so they may be just arrogant enough to come out and play man D like UNC did. If they do, TVD does just fine like A&M.
If Clemson plays zone or switches to zone like UNC, TVD probably struggles.

Dawson and TVD can rip apart man D. They both need a plan for all these teams that are likely going to switch to zone.

I think TVD comes out the last drive, in the red zone stares down X while 2-3 DBs converge. Then TVD goes Surprise!! and throws it to the wide open TE for game winning TD.
Good analysis brother but I think this game is gonna depend on how many pregame “vitamins” we take

😂 at the insta lines.

No idea how you still have the passion to put the time into these. I’m so worn out myself. Keep it up.

Alright my brothers and sisters, grab your preworkout of choice, fill up that syringe of tren, and gather round, we’ve got some **** to discuss.

As I’m sitting here pondering the 2023 Miami Hurricanes football season, I can’t help but be reminded of the fitness industry in general. I’m not in to bodybuilding. ***** cringe as ****. However, something struck me as I was feeling the DMAA coursing through my veins.

Not unlike your favorite insta-hoes, the Miami Hurricanes in 2023 had a lot of filters. The lighting was perfect. The airbrushing was on point. We had our diet and water intake specifically designed to look phenomenal when that photo was taken.

But the truth is, like them hoes, we don’t actually look like that. When the lights come on, we are actually a little flabby, we’ve got some cellulite, and the pump has worn off.

Having said that, I still firmly believe this team is not a complete mirage and we just have to rely on our coaches to do a better job covering up those flaws because we’ve got the Clemson Tigers, a team we haven’t beaten in almost 15 years, coming to town, and despite their flaws as well, there’s nothing Dabo likes more than embarrassing us.

I won’t belabor the point about our Head Coach. After the GT game, I don’t even really want to mention his name. However, I still have faith in both of our coordinators to come up with a game plan that gives us a chance to win this one. There’s lots of nitpicking going on (some valid some absurd) but bottom line is after last years abomination on the field we currently have the #7 offense and the #18 defense in the country and that’s pretty impressive (even if somewhat skewed).

Having said all this, I’m feeling the euphoria kick in, I’m feeling the amphetamines sending my blood pressure through the roof….the endorphins….the adrenaline….

Thinking about that hypocritical “oh shucks golly” **** boy Dabo Swinney standing across the sideline, pumping his players full of cash stacks and SARMS all in the name of Jesus. Rumor has it that he had all of his bibles removed because the covers were black. “I prefer white” he said. I have zero doubt he loves beating us so badly because his shriveled little wang is still upset about the Miami Hurricanes putting Swag on the map.

**** this dude. **** everyone that commits to him. **** everyone that enables him. **** em…this is why we win:

Shannon Dawson: I get it. When we lose, we look for a reason why. We want to solve the puzzle. Truth is, this offense is flawed, but it’s dangerous every time it hits the field. Dawson doesn’t have elite talents to rely on so he has to pick and choose who can do what in which situation. Clemsons defense is outstanding and will likely be our toughest challenge of the season on that side of the ball for our OC and our QB, but Dawson has been a huge bright spot on the team this year and he will put our guys in positions to make plays.

Jacolby George: this board is obsessed with Restrepo and TVD, but beneath all of that nonsense, Jacolby George is having an absolutely massive breakout season. In fact, he’s saved his biggest games for the biggest stages (so far). This kid is smooth and reliable and in a game where big plays might be hard to come by, he might be our biggest threat. Look for him to score.

Jaden Davis: I had Jaden highlighted last week because frankly, I knew he would be targeted. It did not go his way like I hoped, but I think we bounce back this week. He made mistakes and is limited, but he was also hung out to dry by his teammates a few times. Clemson doesn’t have the juice UNC has and I expect the secondary to clean this up. Look for a bounce back here.

Wesley Bissainthe: my wild card on defense. When he’s out there he is a dude that jumps off the screen. He doesn’t play a ton of snaps (or doesn’t seem like he does) but he’s a big play waiting to happen every time he’s out there. We got absolutely housed on turnovers last week and we desperately need to flip that script. I look to Wes on a blitz to cause a big fumble or a TFL that leads to a turnover.

Tyler Van Dyke: He will be on my list every single week so let’s just get that out of the way. Like most college QBs, TVD is flawed. He’s also electric at times. Is TVD the QB that stares down a linebacker and throws him the ball? Is he the QB that stands in the pocket and takes an absolute decleating missile of a hit to the face so he can deliver one of the most impressive passes a Cane QB has thrown? Truth is he’s both. But I tend to see TVD as more the latter than the former. I expect him to play smarter this week against a tough defense, and deliver in the big moments.

Verdict:

I hate hypocrites man. ****** hate em. While I don’t like Mario’s tough talk and lack of discipline, I don’t think he’s a hypocrite. Dabo is a hypocrite. **** him. The season is in the balance for both teams this week and the fans need to get hype.

So throw on those waist trainers, put on those shoes with the heel that gives you another inch or two, stuff some socks down your pants, fluff up that combover, bang out those push-ups, because it’s time to cover up those flaws and bag this piece of *** anyway

Epic post my friend! I love this weekly column you are doing. You found your niche and it works. Keep it up brother!

Now to the game ...You know that I love your stuff and you're my boy but c'mon! Let's get real here for a second. Everything you wrote has its basis in reality but in this particular case I just don't see this team walking out with a W. You nailed the theme with the filters and the airbrush. Unfortunately, Dabo has a penchant for unmasking us in front of huge crowds/national tv audiences. It's kind of like the douche bag jock that liked to pick on the small kid by pulling his pants down in front of the cheerleaders. That's the way I see this game going. As flawed as this Clemson team may be in comparison to their championship teams, they are still more talented than we are where it counts, on both lines.

I'll sum up the game as follows. We won't be able to run and Clemson's front 7 won't give TVD time to go to his second read. That means we won't be able to score much all night.

On the flip side, Clemson's OL will methodically beat down our DL gashing us for solid gains on the ground then stonewalling our DL on passing downs giving the QB ample time to pick our slow footed secondary apart. Oh it won't be anything fancy and it won't need to be. Clemson's passing game will consist of bubble screens, finding the TE in the middle of the field and torturing our CBs with choice routes all game. It will mostly be shallow to intermediate stuff with some deep shots mixed in to break the monotony. Deep shots that we are powerless to defend. By now the entire conference knows that if the offense has trouble on early downs and/or commits penalties that put them in a 3rd and long hole, not to worry just go deep on Miami because they are absolutely powerless to stop it.

Please believe me when I say that I do not derive any sort of masochistic pleasure writing something so depressingly negative but it's the reality of where we are right now. We have not beaten Clemson at home since 1956 and I don't expect that trend to change tonight. We are also winless at home vs the ACC under Mario and I don't expect that to change tonight either. Could it change in the future? Yes absolutely it could. It just won't happen tonight and that's a real shame. Our team is made up of great kids who work hard and won't give up. They just don't have the horses at critical positions(DT, CB) and a lack of experience or depth at the others. It will get better. It just won't get better tonight.

However........... If this team is absolutely sick and phukking tired of talking about how they have lost 2 in a row and they come out angry, ****ed off and locked in with laser like focus and both coordinators have inspired gameplans then we could make this really interesting by giving the fans what they mostly don't expect. A mentally tough team that came to play.

Now this would mean that the OL would have to come together to play their best game as a unit. It means that Tyler Van Dyke would get in a groove from the beginning and ride it all game. Elijah Arroyo will be making his first appearance this season and he could be the pressure point or X factor that takes Clemson by surprise and catches them off guard. One of our RBs will have to have a very good game and it would make sense that a guy like Ajay Allen who was hyped all off season but has not shown this far had himself a ballgame. It would be a great time to see Chris Johnson and what real speed can bring to our offense. Maybe inject some of Brashard Smith, Ray Ray and Harrell into the downfield passing game in addition to jet sweeps, reverses, slip screens etc......

On defense, Leonard Taylor, Branson Deen, and Reuben Bain plus Wes Bissainthe, Mauigoa, James Williams and Kam Kinchens would have to all have great games playing inspired football. Let's say an unexpected contribution from someone like Popo Aguirre and/or Jadais Richard to really ignite the defense!

Josh Pate had a great point. We have turned the ball over 9 times in the last 2 games combined for a -8 in turnover differential in that span. That trend is not likely to continue plus the defense has not had a multi turnover game this season. That trend is also not likely to continue.

We can beat these guys! It's just a matter of which team shows up. What I do know is that I will be rooting my A$$ off for my Canes! We find a way to win this game and use this opportunity to show that we can overcome the adversity of the past 2 weeks then that could galvanize this squad, get the GT monkey off our back and wash the horrid taste of the last two weeks out of our mouths! Go Canes!!!!!

A very nice entertaining write up.

I don't know about a TVD bounce back. The book is out on him. Clemson has had 2 weeks to prepare multiple schemes against him.

After listening to the podcast from McShay of ESPN giving his evaluation of TVD, I'm convinced TVD's issues aren't simply bad decision making. The bad decisions are leading to interceptions, buts it's the root cause that is the issue. Per McShay, TVD is locking into his primary target pre-snap and he stares down the receiver post-snap. He also doesn't process thru his progressions quickly enough.

What we saw from the GT and UNC game is that their defenses are showing one coverage pre-snap and then shifting into another coverage post snap. Because TVD has determined where he's going with the ball pre-snap, and he's staring down his primary receiver post-snap, he doesn't see the coverage change. Further, when he does identify his primary target is covered, he seems to default to Restrepo if Restrepo wasn't the primary in the first place.

What this all means is teams can dictate where the ball will go and plan for it. They will show one coverage telling TVD to throw to receiver #1 pre-snap and then jump that route with multiple defenders. You can bet dollars to doughnuts Clemson will have several coverage schemes to throw at TVD.

I just don't see coaching that out of him in 1 week.

On the flip side, McShay has TVD as the 9th or 10th QB in the NFL draft. That's a day 3 draft selection and maybe even a UDFA. This could all work out well for everyone if TVD returns next year for his final season. I don't think it makes sense for him to transfer unless Jacurri or Emory beat him out in the Spring. It would be year 2 in Dawson's offense. He'd have a full offseason to clean up his game. Jacurri and Emory would have another full season to learn and improve. Jacurri and Emory would battle it out for QB1 in 2025. If Jaccuri won the job as Rsh Junior, we would be set up nicely for the next 5 years as follows:

2024 - TVD - Senior
2025 - JB - Rsh Junior
2026 - JB - Rsh Senior
2027 - EW - Rsh Junior
2028 - EW - Rsh Senior

If this scenario plays out we could see multiple CFP runs.

@JHallCanes This post gets high marks. First off, I too could feel the warmth of Deca (you'll have to pardon me, I'm a little older) passing through my veins as I read your analysis, but it wasn't until you dropped a "shriveled wang" that I really started to see the true genius of your analysis. Once the Dabo-bashing began, I was finished, like a fluffer working overtime on a shoot in the Valley. As The Iron Sheik would say, "Fuccc the Dabo."
Go Canes.

Things are looking rough right now my brother. Spent all week discussing the ins and outs of our weaknesses, but it’s time for the game and to get hype up again even while recognizing this team is in a tough spot at the moment
