Thoughts From the Bench Press: Clemson

No Kathy Ireland??
How about some Christy Turlington?

A very nice entertaining write up.

I don't know about a TVD bounce back. The book is out on him. Clemson has had 2 weeks to prepare multiple schemes against him.

After listening to the podcast from McShay of ESPN giving his evaluation of TVD, I'm convinced TVD's issues aren't simply bad decision making. The bad decisions are leading to interceptions, buts it's the root cause that is the issue. Per McShay, TVD is locking into his primary target pre-snap and he stares down the receiver post-snap. He also doesn't process thru his progressions quickly enough.

What we saw from the GT and UNC game is that their defenses are showing one coverage pre-snap and then shifting into another coverage post snap. Because TVD has determined where he's going with the ball pre-snap, and he's staring down his primary receiver post-snap, he doesn't see the coverage change. Further, when he does identify his primary target is covered, he seems to default to Restrepo if Restrepo wasn't the primary in the first place.

What this all means is teams can dictate where the ball will go and plan for it. They will show one coverage telling TVD to throw to receiver #1 pre-snap and then jump that route with multiple defenders. You can bet dollars to doughnuts Clemson will have several coverage schemes to throw at TVD.

I just don't see coaching that out of him in 1 week.

On the flip side, McShay has TVD as the 9th or 10th QB in the NFL draft. That's a day 3 draft selection and maybe even a UDFA. This could all work out well for everyone if TVD returns next year for his final season. I don't think it makes sense for him to transfer unless Jacurri or Emory beat him out in the Spring. It would be year 2 in Dawson's offense. He'd have a full offseason to clean up his game. Jacurri and Emory would have another full season to learn and improve. Jacurri and Emory would battle it out for QB1 in 2025. If Jaccuri won the job as Rsh Junior, we would be set up nicely for the next 5 years as follows:

2024 - TVD - Senior
2025 - JB - Rsh Junior
2026 - JB - Rsh Senior
2027 - EW - Rsh Junior
2028 - EW - Rsh Senior

If this scenario plays out we could see multiple CFP runs.

Tbh TVD is essentially the same quarterback as when he first got here and that’s both really good and can be bad. So I’m not sure the book is out on him necessarily as it’s just sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t

I agree and disagree. Yes, it works sometimes, and McShay pointed out that TVD hasn't progressed from 2021. However, it's not simply that it works sometimes. His issues are going to be problems in every game moving forward until he is fixed and I don't see that happening until the offseason other than a bandage on a trauma wound.

This game does not depend on TVD as much as it depends on the Clemson D.

Clemson has talent so they may be just arrogant enough to come out and play man D like UNC did. If they do, TVD does just fine like A&M.
If Clemson plays zone or switches to zone like UNC, TVD probably struggles.

Dawson and TVD can rip apart man D. They both need a plan for all these teams that are likely going to switch to zone.

I think TVD comes out the last drive, in the red zone stares down X while 2-3 DBs converge. Then TVD goes Surprise!! and throws it to the wide open TE for game winning TD.
