As we get closer and closer to kickoff, and every nuance and angle of this game swirls though my head, the one thing I keep coming back to over and over is just how perfect of an opportunity this is from literally every perspective. Rarely do opportunities this perfect come along for a team, a coach, and a program.
First of all, for Manny. How often does a brand new coach, a first-time Head Coach for that matter, get a chance to start their career with a neutral site game against, what I feel, is your biggest and most hated rival? This doesn't happen everyday. The closest thing I can think of is Jimmy Johnson in 1984, starting his first game here against the #1 team in the country (Auburn). But JJ had been a HC before, and it wasn't a natural rival. This is Manny's first game ever, and he gets a chance to take on the filthy cousin****ing gator.....what more can you possibly ask for in your first game?
And speaking of the gator, what an incredible opportunity to play these delusional ****heads, RIGHT NOW, as opposed to basically any time in the past 6-7 years. This game literally could not have come at a better time. The gator is as "up" as they've been probably since 2010 to start a season. They began that year at #10, just 2 years removed from the 2008 National Championship. But every year since, the expectations have been down. Imagine this game being played after one of their 4 win seasons? Their confidence wouldn't be nearly as high, and again, the opportunity to beat what people think is a marquee opponent wouldn't be nearly as prominent. These dudes actually think they're a good football team. There are people in that fanbase who think they can beat UGA and play for the SEC. What a perfect opportunity to humble them on national TV in front of the whole world.
Yes, the whole world will be watching. Again, what an opportunity to announce to the country that #TNM is real and not a mirage created by the false hope of a new coach. They literally moved up this game a week so EVERYONE can watch. There isn't a football fan in the country who will miss this game. Everyone is foaming at the mouth for football....well, this is the FIRST game of this season that actually matters. Every college football fan and even NFL fans will be tuning in. What a chance to show the world, literally, what this program is about and what this team will be this season.
So again, you just don't get the stars to align like this in life very often. Opportunities like this do not come around frequently. Yes, there will be 11 more games this year, at least. No, Manny and this year will not be defined by only these 60 minutes. But you couldn't draw this up any better. An underdog. Week 1. National TV. Your most hated opponent. Them coming off their best year in a long time, with a ton of optimism, expectations, and confidence. All eyes on your new coach. I'm sure there's some credence to having Manny start his reign with a cupcake to ease into this whole Head Coach thing. Most guys get that chance. But ***** that, this is Miami. We wouldn't want it any other way.
I just hope this staff and roster understands the true opportunity that's been laid out in front of them. Don't let it slip. Chances like this don't happen often. Go show the world, your fanbase, your staff, your school, and most of all these delusional pricks in jorts that, no matter what, Miami owns []_[].
