This defensive line will be historic

For the “going to take a step back” guys,

You guys do realize the amount of talent in this defensive line room, right?

There is an 85.9% chance that the FIVE 5 star defensive linemen on this roster will eventually be drafted, with a 62.8% chance that they become 1st round picks. Add in Moten, a former 3 star recruit who is currently projected as a 1st round talent, and you’re looking at a defensive line room with the potential to produce SIX, 1ST ROUND NFL DRAFT PICKS before even factoring in the rest of the roster.

Now add players like Booker Pickett, Herbert Scroggins, Keona Davis, Jarquez Carter, Keshawn Stancil, and Asharri Charles 🤦🏾‍♂️

So the question is this: you’re giving Corey Hetherman arguably one of the most talented defensive line groups in the country, combined with a proven defensive scheme that has consistently produced elite run defenses everywhere he has coached…

And you don’t think he’s going to be able to build a defense that completely disrupts and shuts teams down?

At some point, the talent and the coaching track record have to matter.

If he had committed to virtually any other ACC team he would likely be amongst the top 4 players on the offensive roster. Kid is a beast with legit 4.5 speed at 6'5" and 250 pounds and can catch. Any sane OC would be creating an active role for him.
 
I completely understand the crazy ability Bain and Mesidor had to set the edge vs the run. However, they weren't taught that by themselves. They were taught that by JT..
 
We may have lost two stars at d end who will no doubt be tough to replace, but the totality of overall depth should do wonders for us. And I like many love the upside of these young guys who won't be aaked to do too much too soon and will likely be playing vs teams who are down 10+ points to us 80-90% of the time. Keona Davis should become a very valuable piece at DT and I expect at least 1 young d end aside from Lightfoot/Blount to take a big step. Its almost showtime boyz 🙌

We're not replacing what Bain and Mesidor did with two single players. It will be 4+ guys getting regular snaps at DE. Given that I think we can get close. And given how good our DTs should be, the DL as a whole be just as good as last year

We will be elite, a step back is in the context of losing two of our best DEs ever, arguably the best player in the country last year in bain. Thats pretty reasonable to expect a step back at least on the edge. No amount of depth will replicate the impact of superstar players.

I think our superstars will be interior so i think the dline will still be elite. There is still alot of talent in the edge room too just no bain or mesi which is fine. Still more than enough talent to produce an elite defense

Good point.

I am with you and am very excited about the DL. I think Lightfoot, Scott, and Blount will all make huge leaps in performance this year and wreck games. We have Moten & Wilson as stalwarts too. Good/great depth depending on how ready guys like Newton and Charles are.

I don't think we are going to be giving up as many easy access throws by design on defense this year either. Having an explosive offense will do wonders for the defense too.
