This defensive line will be historic

The post said it was no difference between the opponents last year and this year which ain’t true. Like I said they can’t help who on the schedule and they have been great vs the run vs us hat schedule but last year was tougher
I agree. What you say is true. Others have pointed this out as well. Posters are taking it as an attack on the team which I don’t think it is.

Not an attack at all. To be 1st in run defense shows they are playing well but that nd game will be interesting. They have a good o-line but the rbs aren’t no where as good as last year

I'm not making the case that this years defense is anywhere close to last years but these games from last year:

FSU - 404 yards (278 passing)
Louisville - 367 yards (248 passing)
SMU - 388 yards (365 passing)
VT - 395 yards

Aren't all that different from:

FSU - 443 yards (305 passing) 2 OT
Wake - 334 yards (312 passing)
Pitt - 403 yards (334 passing)

That's why I think this UNC game is an important bellwether for the defense. If they can go out and play dominant then I think we'll be OK.

I think it’s already come to life, it is impossible to run on this defensive line. I have no complaints about it.
I mean pass rush. I think they are extra focused on stopping the run. When heatherman really sends the dogs and they've "earned" the right to rush the passer they will get home. It's like we are forgetting how good Wilson, Lightfoot, Blount, and co. can be when pinning their ears back. Remember the Clemson game...

"Damon Wilson enters the game with 3.5 sacks and 26 pressures and owns a 82.0 PFF pass rushing grade, which ranks 37th nationally. Wilson's pressure rate is 17.9 percent and his average time to pressure is 2.2 seconds. In obvious passing situations, Wilson's win rate is at 30.9 percent, which ranks 15th best overall.

Marquise Lightfoot is the closer. When he applies pressure, he finishes off those plays with sacks at a high rate. Lightfoot leads the team with five sacks while generating 24 pressures. His pressure rate checks in at 17.2 percent and against obvious passing situations he wins on 26.3 percent of the time.

Both Wilson and Lightfoot rank inside the top ten in the country in win rate."

To be fair, Clemson has one of THE WORST OLINES in cfb. I mean besides like Famu and Central Michigan, they might be the worst on our schedule.

I didn’t like the pressure I saw against Pitt but their game plan was to get the ball out quickly. They didn’t run a lot of play action or deep drops which balanced Lightfoot and Wilson. I still want to see more push from Moten and Scott up the middle. Too may times the quarterback has that perfect pocket to step up into.

The DL is fine.

It’s the horrible blitzing scheme that is killing us.
It’s so obvious. It’s thinning out the backend too much. And teams are attacking it.

You can’t be this bad bringing pressure unless your pressure is so obvious that it helps the opposing QB.

I'm not saying this is u, but anyone in this thread that repeatedly tries to promote the narrative that this yr's dline is as good as last yr's is smokin str8 crack. Smh. Determining how well a dline is playing doesn't just get reduced to how many sacks they generate; there's much more to it than that.

Last yr's dline was a top 5 unit in the country & without question one of the best in program history. The secondary was also top 10, & we were top 10 in overall havoc rate. This yr we have the 40th ranked dline, the 38th ranked secondary, & are 89th in havoc rate.

The net effect of all of this is that the same 5-man pressures that Heatherman was able to call last yr with great success are no longer as effective & are resulting in this defense giving up too many explosives. To counteract that, Heatherman has to rely more on simulated & creeper (replacement) pressures, which is what we saw this past wk against Pitt, when he decided to call multiple Cover-0 simulated pressures for example.
