butch davis inherited a worse situation and was a very experienced count at miami and in nfl. golden is an al groh guy and miami would never have hired groh in past.

You would want to believe Butch inherited a worse situation, but that is speculative.

This year reminds me a bit of the '01 team actually, now that you mention it. We have, like, a couple quarterbacks on the roster, and umm...a few WR's too. Very similar team.

dumbass....99 team won their first game against a pretty decent OSU squad. GTFOH

And then did what after that game?

Then they beat FAMU and lost to #3 PSU by 4 pts in a close game.

Really comparable to losing to a shltty Louisville team

And then what happen after they lost to PSU? Keep going...I insist.

We ended up smashing a good GT in the bowl game that year....what just happened two games ago?

Go on.....

If you really think that this years team has any type of parallel to the '99 team and that next season the 2000 Hurricanes are showing up you are out of your mind.

it don't stop...won't stop... can't stop.

Some dudes been out in the sun too long. Mother****ers are reminding me of Blondie after Tuco made his *** walk through the desert.

My point is, when we lost those three games in the middle, PSU, an East Carolina team THAT DID NOT EVEN PRACTICE and FSU, this fan base was up in arms. Then they got smashed by VaTech and that was supposed to seal Butch's fate. By all means that was a very mediocre year considering the talent that was on that roster and all signs pointed to coaching. That same staff turned it around 1 year later.

And GT was decent but nothing to bring up

Better than any team we have beaten in a while, we also beat OSU to open up the season. Very similar to getting smashed by an average at best Louisville team.
Look, we dont need to keep going with this. You have your opinion, I have mine. All I'm saying is that if this year is like '99, like you say, then next season would be the 2000 'Canes coming back and I dont see a chance in **** of that happening.

This current team reminds me of the 2013 team.

Which reminds me of the 2012 team.

Which reminds me . . .

All you proved was that fans were mistaken in 1999. That does not mean we are wrong again. And bye the way Butch was a bad game day coach.

Other than the fanbase calling for Butch's head and an apparent stock-piling of talent, I'm struggling to see the overall similarities. For all of Butch's faults, and there were many, he won games against some top teams. He lost to some really crappy teams, too, but AG hasn't shown that he can beat any team with a legit pulse. The UF ag win is the best he's got, and that was dampened by the Crocs (and us) ****ting the bed the rest of the year. AG needs to get some of those wins against legit competition and give the team (the players, not this apocraphyl fanbase) some semblance of hope that he can have them playing for something meaningful in the near future. The coaches and players are uptight...you could see it on their faces before the opening kickoff. If he can't get them to relax and have fun, and soon, then he's toast.

1999? don't be such a moper.

This reminds me of 1983. We lost the first game with a freshman QB, then ran a train on the rest of CFB for our first national title! Al's got 'em right where he wants 'em.

For the brainless, this is sarcasm

This current team reminds me of the 1999 squad, which is actually a good thing and interesting.

Let's start with coaches.

Butch Davis was in his 5th year and I think a year removed from the NCAA sanctions. That year when we lost a close game to Penn State, I remember listening to WQAM the next morning and fans were saying they "had it with Cokers horrendous play calling", and "Butch Davis is not a GAME DAY coach and he needs to be shown the door". Do you guys remember the infamous Chafie Fields play over Mike Rumph? I believe Miami was in Man Coverage when they should've been in Prevent Defense as the game was basically won. Butch Davis was scolded for that and guess who was the D Coordinator as well? Schiano. Do you guys also remember the horrendous play calling the next game against East Carolina, a team that did not practice for a whole week due to a Hurricane that hit that town? Miami started out fast and then got shut down and made a plethora of mistakes in the second half and East Carolina came back and snatched victory from the Canes. Once again, I tuned into WQAM, and fans called in sounding like they had pitch forks looking for Butch Davis and the rest of his staff. The team also went on to lose it's 3rd straight game that season against FSU. Seemed tragic, didn't it. Did I mention who our offensive coordinator was?

Player Personnel/Perception/Trajectory

Similar in many ways. Truth be told, nationally, and even our own fans didn't even know how stacked we were. I remember we had Kenny Kelly at QB with Ken Dorsey as backup. We had James Jackson in the backfield with Clinton Portis. We had a fleet of WR's like we do now and a mediocre O Line. We were actually stacked on defense with the likes of Dan Morgan, Nate Webster, Damione Lewis, Ed Reed etc. Our defensive talent and depth now is very similar to that team. We were listed as nationally irrelevant by most of the media as we are perceived that way now, but just 1 year later, in 2000, everybody was back on Miami's jock.

Bottom Line

I know I'm going to get negged, but the knee jerk reaction from last nights game has been real crazy. I already understand how fickle this fan base is and how quick the "off with his head" sirens go off when we lose a game. I will say this, this staff as well as these players have gone and are still going through the rigors, the same way that 1999 squad did, full of coaching errors and bone headed mistakes by players that cost games. I'm not apologizing for this current staff, but I do think because they have gone through the rigors, that is what will bring about greatness. Miami was full of talent in 1999 with your favorite coach Butch Davis and still managed to make fans (a lot of you same people on this board, and don't lie) sick to their stomachs with the losses they had, and it will be no different this year. I really believe Miami is on the brink of having an elite program. I predict that Miami will have another 9-4 season. I also believe that the 2015 season will be the season Miami wins the coastal and make a playoff appearance.

Sure, this reminds me of the 99 squad - it reminds of the VT game where we got our **** pushed in and it reminds me of trotting out there an ill-prepared freshman QB that was set up to fail.
