in the preseason you started to hear the hype about malachi toney, however we've been burned before with the so called "green tree all americans" shoutout to @k9cane

but @DMoney and @Peter Ariz told no lies ... they both said malachi toney would lead us in yards and catches ... well thru five games toney leads the team with 29 catches and yards with 375 ... good call fellas

There are guys who flash in a scrimmage or a week of practice, or maybe a spring, and then flop in games. I get it.

But the guys who are consistently delivering in practice- Toney, Bryce Fitzgerald, OJ Frederique before that- are almost always the guys who will be making plays in the games.

The key to Toney’s success is that he is an extremely consistent player in all facets.

Toney is a dawg and has quickly become one of the best WRs in college football...but this is also the offense. It is slot friendly and the slot is for all intents and purposes, WR1 in this offense like clockwork. From Tank Dell to Restrepo now to Malachi Toney.

Toney will be our all-time leading WR by the time he is done here - single season and career.

Sit back and enjoy.

Yeah, I said it in another thread, but I'm here for my heaping plate of crow.

I never doubted Toney's talent, but I was very vocal on my desire to get Trebor Pena, because I know how a Dawson offense works, and you need an incredibly smart, (and I thought) experienced player who could read defenses on the fly with a feel for the game that doesn't usually come quickly.

And I spoke to some people in the summer and through camp who hit me with the Aaron Rodgers.

This kid has "it". He's supremely physically talented, but he's incredibly patient and understands the game, and he catches everything.

I was very skeptical. I didn't think a true freshman could do it quite like this, especially not one who skipped his senior year in HS and wasn't even a full-time WR in High School his Junior year.

Hand up.....I'm a big dummy. The people who told me to shut up were right, and I was a panicky fool. This kid is THE GOODS. The way he feels his way in the middle of the field, his eyes are always in the right spot, his body is always in the right spot, his hands are incredible (I think @Cribby said he'd let Toney catch his newborn baby like a punt, that **** still cracks me up, and now I believe him), and he has legitimate top end physical tools. It's not like he's just an elite athlete, or just smart. He's truly both.

I can't wait to watch this kid play for a long, long time.

In my view, a good/elite program can have what I call 'a perpetually high floor', where even if you lose 1st round draft picks and All-Americans, the guys who replace them are still very productive and sound players who keep the train moving forward

At a certain point you have to have faith in your evals, hit on recruiting and then develop --- and then the players have to perform.

And credit to coach Beard for his part in all this

He plays as if he and Beck have been together for 3 seasons. He fields the punts with incredible confidence. He never looks panicked or lost. Plays like a 5th year senior. And his blocking extremely physical. I've not seen anything like this kid at Miami?

Fitzgerald gives the same sort of "beyond his years" vibes on the defensive side IMHO. All three of his interceptions have been great, but that one against FSU he just looked so composed and in control and the return was outstanding as well.

You're not a big dummy. You're a fan....and an honest one at that - kudos.

The part that any sane fan would never predict is the MATURITY that this kid has. He just turned 18, yet behaves like a 22 year old vet. Who among the fans would predict that?

That is the most surprising thing I see, the confidence he plays with at such a young age.
I’ve seen some good freshman over the years, making played, but I don’t remember ever seeing some as confident on the field as Tony.

@DMoney in all your years watching practice, who was the most consistent practice player not to get consistent game time?

I’ve been hyping this joker for years. People at AH told me he was killing all the older star cb’s as a 9th grader. Back then everyone assumed he’d be a buckeye . There’s a reason I was so happy when he reclassified and committed.
He and Bain are prime examples of the recruiting losses that were killing us for two decades, and neither was a “5 star”.
