The whole "quality losses" argument makes no sense to me either. Once we establish that all of these teams are flawed and have picked up losses this year, how is losing a good team a major deciding factor?

We are trying to determine a champion - a team who can win in the playoffs. Not a biggest loser competition. Who you can beat >>>>> who you can lose to

The 5 highest ranked conference champs get in (via autobid).

Right now, in the AP poll, Duke has ZERO points. Meanwhile, BOTH teams in the AAC-CG are ranked in the AP poll (and likely both will be in the CFP ranking tomorrow night). with North Texas at 11-1 and Tulane at 10-2. Then, in the Sunbelt, James Madison is ranked in the AP poll (and likely will be in the CFP ranking tomorrow night) at 11-1.

Meaning...the winner of the AAC (either N. Texas or Tulane) and the PROBABLE winner of the Sunbelt (James Madison) might BOTH be ranked in the CFP Top 25. While Duke will probably NOT be ranked, even if they were to win the ACC-CG.

And if THAT were to happen...then both the AAC and Sunbelt champs would get the autobids over Duke/ACC.

We need UVa to win to be guaranteed an autobid for the ACC.

I’m smack dab in the middle of 4.

This ******* sucks. I know Miami is one of the 10 best teams in the country. I wanted us to make the playoffs last year, of course, but I didn’t think we were one of the 10 best teams. I thought our offense could score on anyone, and they would have in the playoffs, but we’d have probably needed some luck to actually win a game because the defense was so bad.

This year, I know we’re one of the 10 best teams and we’d likely be favored or at most a less than 3 point dog to win a playoff game. And we’re not gonna get a chance to do it. Also, I blinked, and the season’s over. Bain, Mesodor, and Mauigoa never put on a Miami uniform again, among probably several others. That’s depressing as **** to have the year end with a massive win…but you don’t win anything. As one of the 10 best teams in America. Depressing as ****.

Ya probably right. Barely getting past a dog**** Auburn and getting their teeth kicked in this weekend I’d hope forces the committee to reconsider us.

Absolutely. The idiot CFP committee has turned this into quantum physics. It's football, and everyone who is capable of sentient thought knows we're one of the ten best college football teams in the country, by any metric. The rest is just old-boy nonsense. (Watching those Bama and OU horror shows this weekend just made this even more obvious.)
 
sending a 3 loss team to a playoff would set a new precedence. I’m interested to see if that’s the case.
 
I said this in the other thread. Mario needs to reach out to Saban to see if he’d advocate for us over ND based on the head to head win, comparable components, etc.

If freaking Nick Saban says we should be in over ND - that committee would certainly consider that.

I bet the rankings of 8-12 stay the same. Which, as big of a SEC shill that Rece Davis, he’s been pretty direct questioning the committee chair.

I’d imagine he’s going to ask the chair what the deal with BYU and Bama losing is. If they both lose does that hurt them or are they safe? I remember last year they basically said starting with us, we had no chance to move up in the rankings after the last week of the regular season. They only left room for Bama to jump up.

I wouldn’t be shocked if they said something similar about spots 13-15 this year. Obviously our resume cannot improve any. If we can’t no one behind us can either. So no one could jump us for an at large. Then the question would be, does Bama losing three times, one to a bad FSU team we beat, OU and the team that’s their best win diminish their resume? Does Bama beating UGA in what week 4 or 5, then losing a few weeks from the playoffs change how impactful that win is?

If they want to word salad that ND isn’t the same team from week 1, that same logic should apply to Bama when it comes to UGA. If we’ve seen Bama play a CFP participant, an FCS school, a 5-7 team and another CFP participant the last four weeks. And they go 2-2, with an ugly win that needed a fourth down conversion to win it change the outlook of them? They’ve repeatedly said they want ascending teams, does that sound like an ascending team to you?

That's exactly right.

We were ranked 18th at our very WORST of the season.
At our best, we were ranked 2nd.
We're playing our best football over the past month and they still want to punish us for being at our worst.

When ND was at their worst they almost (and should have) fell out of the top 25. We beat a top 10 team as an underdog. They beat a top 20 team as a favorite.

Not to mention, we didn't just beat them but we controlled that game and shut down their Heisman candidate and the score should have been worse than it was.

"If we had beat SMU or Louisville, none of this would be a discussion".

Well.

"If ND just beat A&M or Miami, none of this would be a discussion".

You are asking a question that, literally, has no precedent.

Clearly, the AAC champion should be ranked in the next CFPC poll.

Presumably, the Doomsday Scenario is if Duke wins the ACC and the Trojans of Troy State win the Sunbelt, with BOTH being unranked in the next CFPC poll.

At that point, I have no idea how the CFP would choose between Duke and Troy for the fifth and final autobid.

I wonder if they could choose neither since technically neither is a "ranked conference champion".
