MEGA There’s Still Hope for the ACCCG/CFB Playoffs Mega Merge Thread

can anyone succinctly list the ACC games this weekend and what Canes fans should want to happen?

It appears they are setting Miami up to be an at large bid as long as they take care of business. So likely Miami jumps Utah and BYU in the end and you have 2 teams from the ACC get in.

Whether Miami then jumps ND a spot or not is kind of moot, but in this scenario both should make it in.

What makes you think they plan on moving UM into the top 12? If we move one spot to 12, then per their own statements the head to head with ND comes into play because we are clustered. So IMO they are going to keep Miami 4 spots or more away unless someone forces their hand.

I actually thought about that as I posted this post above. But I was already into it and figured it would be a good follow up discussion. Thanks for playing along. lol

I guess the big difference is that we dont get the week off. I'm thinking we'd be better off getting a bye week and play all road games in the post season than have to play an extra game (ACC-CG) and no bye week.

Edit: Is there still also a possibility that Miami could play in and win the ACC CG against a 3-4 loss team, get the automatic bid and still not be in the top six? That would truly be the nightmare scenario. Extra game, no week off, AND no home playoff game.
Possible. But I think if we did the above they would have to rank us above ND and thus possibly get the #8 seed and a home 1st round game.

A week off would be nice but I don’t trust the committee to give us the last at large. At least with going to the ACC-CG, we completely control our destiny.

Just an FYI, Josh Pate last night stated that the CFP committee does far less than most of us expect. He basically summarized that the rankings are just the old BCS model formula run and the committee simply reviews and make a decision to flip a couple spots. He said the entire presentation on Tuesday and explanation are only theatrics. The committee does not really evaluate teams or “watch the tape”.

Check out this twitter account comparing the results, seems plausible. If true, we are getting pulled up. Unfortunately Margin of Victory was not a big impact on the old BCS computer models as compared to wins and quality of opponents. However, the Margin of victory does impact the AP/Coaches poll voters which is included in the calc.

A few of the BCS computer programs absolutely had RUTS as a value.
In 2000 it was the computers that screwed us, as some included RUTS, but did not include head to head.

For your viewing nausea. Both polls had us at #2.
Three computer programs had us at #2, four had us at #3 and the Seattle Times had us at #4.

The ones that had us at 3-4, used RUTS but not head to head.

JUST ACC:

Week 13 - This week:
--Syracuse to beat ND - CFP (only need 1 ND loss)
----------

--Louisville to beat SMU - ACC-CG (need 2 SMU losses)
--UNC to beat Duke - ACC-CG (only need 1 Duke loss)
--Pitt to beat GaTech - ACC-CG
--Stanford to beat Cal - ACC-CG (Tiebreaker impact)

To be clear...if we move into a tier with ND, the head-to-head will become A PART of the conversation. There is no guarantee they would move Miami up. When considering FOUR teams in a tier (such as Seeds 5-8 or Seeds 9-12) they could also move THE OTHER TWO TEAMS ahead of Notre Dame, such that ND and Miami get the last two slots in that tier.

TO ME...it would be better for ND to just lose. They will NOT plummet to #25, this is ND we are talking about. And we need Pitt to beat GT anyhow, so Pitt might "look better" in the final weekend when we beat them.

Everyone relax. Root for chaos in the ACC and chaos in the portion of the CFP directly ahead of us.

I hate those "if x happens I'll do y" posts, so I'll just say one of my Canes shot glasses might get a few extra tosses on Saturday afternoon.

I believe with so much potential chaos for others teams losing. I think Miami will go to the playoffs, but for some reason we don’t we as fans not need to blame the referees or the conference, but Mario Cristobal for losing to SMU and Louisville.

Correct, but the formula got modified in 2004 due to the controversy over that. It was presented that it is the 2004-2013 formula running now, with very minor modifications.

Moral of the story is, if we are back to BCS formula, schedule four extra bye weeks for out of conference. Might as well space them out also.

Look at Indiana/Oregon/BYU/Utah out of conference. They are doing it right and limiting the possible number of losses.

It sucks, we should have won, but lots of good teams with good coaches have two losses. And we didn't lose to MTSU. Louisville and SMU are both good schools. One wonders if it is better to have Narduzzi's attitude and say, "I don't care if we lose all our non-conference games by 100 as long as we run the table in the ACC." It's nice to say we beat UF, USF, and ND, but at the end of the day you could have 2 OOC losses and 1 loss in the ACC and not only make the ACC championship game, but be guaranteed a playoff spot. So the people who say, "We can't lose more than 1 game a season" are dead wrong. We could potentially be a 2 loss team and still get a great seed in the playoffs, including a bye week (2 OOC losses plus 1 conference loss). You just have to win the conference and be one of the 5 highest ranked conference champs.

The SEC/BIG don’t have to pay the losing tax and everybody from the mopes and slurpers knew this before the season started

I knew even with the tough first half of the schedule we couldn’t lose any more than one game

Who cares about the losing tax? If you mean a SEC team could lose two conference games and not get hurt? Ok. So what. We could lose 1 ACC game. Getting through the ACC with just one loss isn't some insurmountable, unrealistic task.

A Miami team that lost 2 OOC conference games and 1 conference game, then wins the ACC championship would have a very good shot at being ranked in the top25 at the end of the season and being one of the 5 highest ranked conference champs. 3 losses and still make the playoffs. Conference wins matter more than almost anything else.

What makes you think they plan on moving UM into the top 12? If we move one spot to 12, then per their own statements the head to head with ND comes into play because we are clustered. So IMO they are going to keep Miami 4 spots or more away unless someone forces their hand.

They moved us up 6 spots last 2 weeks. I think they want us for ratings. We’ll probably jump Utah and BYU if we keep winning

According to the other MegaThread we are already in the SEC and B1G and Miami is playing chess while moving like lasagna. But in reality you are 100% correct. Losing Tax. ACC is ****. Coached not to lose.

So knowing this….meathead needs to be working overtime on these conference opponents
We had a g d BYE and a home game and managed to get out coached and outplayed and lost to f ing Louisville!!!!

That is 100% on Meathead and staff and the team not being ready to go

No excuse IMO
