Historically and consistently Miami has recruited in their backyard & Florida as a whole - but they key is in the type of player whether from SoFlo or elsewhere.

Kam Kitchens coming out of Northwestern was always labeled extremely smart, cerebral & once he got to the U it has been said he prepares and watches film like a pro. He also is physically gifted, but not elite like so many SoFlo kids we get. I have said since they came in, Kam is Ed Reed and James Williams is Sean Taylor. James is cerebral as well, but needs to clean up his technique and tackling, as he relies on his superior athleticism. Jacurri Brown is another guy with the cerebral capability along with elite physical tools.

A guy who was physically gifted and played fast, but lacked in mentally processing to get himself on the field more - Avantae Williams.

We need guys that produce big time at the high school level, b/c it translates. Its a football player that makes it happen, rather than loading up on mostly guys who are more physically gifted at a young age or project to have certain freakish measurable's. Yes, we still want and need those types, but we need more guys who are elite above the neck.

I think the class we hav coming in has a bunch of guys who can think the game and process information to understand how the defense & offense scheme flows collectively.

My curiosity is the cerebral part being emphasized and taught at the youth level and up? South Florida or Florida kids as a whole get way more reps than most kids from starting young and then the 7 on 7's, etc, compared to NJ,OH, Pitt and even Texas. Reps, or the 10,000 hour rule...Thoughts??

Bill Castle at Lakeland has always said he could take one of the mediocre Miami-Dade teams and win a state title every year. Has always claimed that those teams are physically gifted but just not coached at all.

No...Historically, UM has recruited outside of Florida as much...if not even more.

although i see what u mean, prepare to get roasted for this:
"Kam is Ed Reed and James Williams is Sean Taylor"
yea thats fine if so lol...I don't mean literally, but from size, to the style of play to the mental aspect. Kam has that feel to be in the right spot for turnovers. Its not a fluke he did this in high school. He had what, 11 or 14 picks, 1 behind the Dade record which I think the safety we lost to Nebraska has. SO he has always had the feel and anticipation and smarts, and he's gotten better from watching film, which is what made Ed Reed elite.

Agree, but the bulk of their roster every year is. SoFlo kids..but those teams of past always got elite talent from the rest of the country to pair with it. Seantrel from Minn, Olsen from NJ, Shockey from Ada OK, DJ Williams Cali, Dorsey, Toretta other QB's from Cali, Brophy was Ohio I think, Ed & Reggie Wayne from Louisiana, etc etc..

We are doing that now with Mario. He has the hybrid national elite talent coupled with the best we can get in SoFlo & FL as a whole. This class coming in is strong despite one of most horrific years as a whole. What goes down must come up, and I think as much as we put weight into some of the names like Rooster, we have to shed the dead weight of guys that don't buy into the program or who cant get it above the beck.

Another cerebral player is Wesley Bissainthe who has picked things up quick as a true frosh.

I think reps depend on the size of the roster as opposed to the State. But anyway, I remember watching one of those OL vs DL camps in New Jersey on YouTube, and I came away very impressed by the flexibility of the O-Linemen from New Jersey.

Football IQ is and has been too undervalued amongst this program for far too long. We've been constantly littered with players who lack discipline, quick mental processing, and the ability to respond to adversity. The hope is Mario & Zo can change this through proper vetting & evals.
