The Switch from Zone to Man

We definitely played better in man.
At least throws were contested, unlike our zone.

It's not really a zone versus man thing though. It's THE WAY WE PLAY ZONE that makes it so bad. We don't play a "match" zone, we just drop to a spot and wait for the ball to be thrown.
This. Everyone plays some zone. If you only play one type of coverage the offense is going to take advantage of that. Also, you will get abused on the ground if you play nothing but man coverage. We play zone like a crappy AI football video game. They go to their assigned area and can only make a play if the ball is thrown to that exact area. If an offense is flooding one side of the zone with a ton of routes, the defense has to match that. It’s not man or zone. You HAVE to play both to be successful.

We got abused in man too lol
We got down 21-0 playing nothing but zone defense. Switched over to man - and even Bubba Bolden said it is his press conference that everything changed - and we made that 19-0 run.

Oklahoma state eventually adjusted and had some success but they only got 16 points after we started dialing up pressure and had our corners up.

playing 100% man isn’t the answer but why we didn’t switch it up before they scored 3 times is why we lost the game (along with the dropped passes)

It doesnt matter if we play man or zone. Both things dont look structured, well schemed up or well coached up.

OSU had trouble with the adjustment until they adjusted. And when they did, we looked like trash again.

We cant even do the fundamental things about defensive football right, so why the **** would a scheme change suddenly change ****? The defensive staff needs to get the **** out.

We came out playing a ton of zone because the staff assumed OSU was going to come out running the ball. They were a run heavy offense and our previous game we gave up 9,000 yards rushing. Why did it take a whole quarter to make an adjustment? That’s the real question.

Coaching.

Combo between man and zone is what most do. It’s calling the right defense throughout the game.

That aside, Defense had very little pass rush. Doesn’t matter what coverage you’re in if the QB has all night to throw...

Second half our offense actually arrived which kept osu off the field. That tends to make the d look better too. We don’t have the talent to run man too much , at least right now. The blitzing helped out more then just running man , less time to pass is always good. Just running a straight two deep man and we get abused. It would be nice if we had disruptive dt’s that showed up more than a couple plays.

Our pass rush and dl is meh. The dt’s never push the pocket, Very meh. We miss Willis , Norton and McIntosh badly. We have jno game changers inside.

Problem with man is: if you dont run man a lot and dont teach how to press, jam and turn your head, it can turn into a ******* disaster real quick if you have run man because the zone is getting obliterated..

Edit: and I always see our dt straight up bullrushing. I see everyone bullrushing, there are no moves or whatever. Its almost like they try to rush passively.

Hard to play man when we don’t feel the need to emphasize corners. And no, our corners aren’t good in man either

And running man too much will get exposed , rub routes / man beaters make it like stealing from a baby. Until we get dudes inside it doesn’t matter.

150 yards in the 2nd half.
2 TDs and a FG in 6 2H possessions (excluding the kneel down drive) is not good.

That also doesn't consider that we essentially tied the game and just like nearly every game the last 15 years the defense then proceeded to give up a 90 yd TD drive (after being 1st & 20 at the 10 yd line). The defense then gave up another 80 yd drive that made the trek back too hard to climb.

They want preferably bigger corners for this scheme , tackling and size is what they care about lol
and thats fine. Ive seen it before you can win playing an aggressive match zone. But we NEED to recruit better athletes at the least.

The front is what makes it all work , we need disruptive dt’s and consistency from dl.

Agreed. Last night we were without 2 DE that will go 1st and 2nd round. If we play more man like we did last night throughout the season with those guys on the edge I think our defensive numbers are better. Of course I could be dead wrong but id like to see us play more aggressive in the secondary. Its what these kids know in SOFL its in the DNA of the Region. Im not saying never play zone but let the kids do what they have their entire lives is all.
