The only reason we have have been in games this season (not counting those against SS, FIU, Todelo) is because of our defense. FSU would of have been 100% a loss, and who knows what happens against UNC if the D doesn't score 3 TDs. That being said, this year is pretty much a lost cause. However, going into next year we are looking at a defense that very well will need to replace:

Graduating (Potential Replacements):
Jaquan Johnson (Amari Carter)
Gerald Willis (Jon Ford / Nesta Silvera)
Michael Jackson (Al Blades / DJ Ivey)
Sheldrick Redwine (Gurvan Hall)

Likely Leaving to NFL (Potential Replacements):
Joe Jackson (Scott Patchan / Greg Rousseau)
Shaq Quarterman (Bradley Jennings Jr)
Mike Pinckney (Waynmon Steed?)

Across the board, that is massive downgrade at almost half of our starting defensive positions. We have no reason to believe the establish culture around this program of kids bolting early will change, especially if it's clear that we won't be competitive on a national stage anytime soon. Hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel here over the next 2-3 years to get out of this cyclical mediocrity. Thoughts?

I was thinking the same thing after the UVA loss. The defense is going to be stripped of multiple playmakers and is going to regress next year. If the offense doesn't pick up the slack expect more losses next season.

We still will have talented players in the secondary, the biggest loss obviously would be Gerald willis

Is the HC leaving with the players? If not next year is a lost cause too

Actually, it's lost even if he leaves. We had a commission made up of former Miami football players going over all of the potential candidates to select our current coach. THere was a concerted effort to not hire another Randy Shannon or Al Golden based on someone who had Power 5 head coach experience. I hate to break this to you, but the next head coach will not be any better than Mark Richt. Just like when we fired Coker. I know people like to fire the coach when they don't get their way, but unless something dramatic happens to our hiring process, nothing changes. Ever.

We are losing some studs on D, no doubt, but wasn't this program built on a "next man up" mentality?!? We didnt appreciate just how good Sean Taylor would be when he was backing up Ed Reed and pretty much only seeing the field on special teams. Don't think anyone could have predicted just how great of careers McGahee and then Gore would have when we were watching Portis.

We have a ton of young talent. Instead of forecasting a future of gloom, how about being excited to see kids like Bandy and Nesta become the alpha dogs?

The sky is not falling.
