The Phrase "learning how to win"

But it’s still X’s and O’s at the end of the day. At its highest level it’s the little things that count...you’d be surprised how many guys who can play football or basketball on a physical talent level, but can’t because the mental work that goes into playing at the highest level holds them back..coaching is the same. You have to be sharp. Even if you played the game you have to be able to communicate, compartmentalize, and teach..that’s why when ppl say “oh he can’t be a *** or head coach because he never played” I scoff at it.
There have been some good coaches who didn't play. Charlie Weis was an outstanding coordinator who just didn't become a great college head coach in one of the toughest positions in football. There were others...just can't remember them all right now.

You're right about Gibbs. I believe Belichick played college at Wesleyan. David Cutcliffe and Chad Morris did not play college football. Mike Leach never played college football. He followed the team closely as a student at BYU when it had a then cutting edge passing attack coached by Lavelle Edwards and Norm Chow. There was a time in the '80's when it seemed like UM and BYU were the two most sophisticated passing attacks in the college game.

If you’ve ever played sports at a competitive level..there is substance to learning how to win. Simply put comes down to stopping self inflicting mistakes and being crisp in situational areas. In baseball limit walks. In basketball no unforced TOS and no stupid fouls. In football no procedural penalties, selfish penalties, and knowing situation, Down distance..that 4th in 17 against UNC playing sticks and not freelancing

That is all “day one” stuff. It doesn’t take years to figure how to not play stupid

Mario said after th auburn loss. If a kid missed a kick, I have to coach up his kicking. If a kid drops a pass, I have to coach up his coaching. If a kid makes a penalty , i have to coach up his discipline. It’s on the coaches.
Ultimately it is. And Manny recognizes that and is trying to change it.

Exactly. A lot of them. I think bill stopped playing because of grades or something like that. But you didn’t have to play the game to learn the nuances of football and coach

It took less than five seconds to find “learn how to win” quotes from those hucksters Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney.
You understand that hucksters try to mimic winners in order to advance their shyst right? No of course you don’t, Jagr.

It’s empty rhetoric, Jagr. Double-talk. Coachspeak. Useless.

It applies in a situation like clemson when they were still losing to fsu and bama, but still a top 10 team. Learning how to do the final little things needed to win against good teams. It does not apply when playing against cmu or nc. We just look like we are "learning how to play."
It applies to them too. It about making the plays that makes a difference and change the game. Against the CMU's and NC'c it comes earlier in the game and creates separation. When was the last time we can empty the bench and allow them to play loose if the opponents were not named Bethune, Coastal Carolina or Charleston Southern?

An excuse lol... Urban meyer took over ohio state went undefeated, saban went 12-2 in year 2, Bobby Bowden 10 - 2,

We know the diffrence lol , year 2 tells the most honestly when you have talent there are games you must win! We expect tough games but you have to win the games your supposed to win

Doing your assignments and playing fundamental football should be enough to beat cmu comfortably . Those are the basic things. Yes you need them to win big games but you need those to win any game at all. Learning how to win is making timely plays, getting to another level in the 4th quarter when your tired, baiting the qb as a safety, and those things come after youve got the basics down. Level 1 compared to level 10. They havnt mastered fundamentals yet. And as has been said all day today that falls on coaching
