The Phony Excuse of the Buyout

Yes, a massive buyout seemingly exists. But guess what? It'll exist next year too. What do we actually save by waiting another year? More lazy "journalism" by Dave Hyde and every other clown member of the media. If a move isn't made now it's not because it can't be "afforded". It's because Donna is passing the buck and we have an AD that's a figurehead. Blah blah blah about that ridiculous excuse about UM's financials being soooooo secret because it's shielded as a private university. Never have I seen anywhere else where the real figures can't be laid out to the public but then again that'd take some members of the media actually caring. When we all sit through another year of this garbage I want it to be explained rationally that it was because we didn't want to eat one year of Golden's salary as that's seemingly the only thing offered as any excuse for no action being taken now. Then again we should expect nothing more from people (and a large contingent of fans) that foolishly believe we're cash strapped.

To your point Golden's salary became public for the world to see this week. The numbers can be found.

Another thing about this buyout...it's highly, highly unlikely they have to pay him the buyout all at once. For instance, Saban's buyout in his first contract with Alabama was the amount remaining on the contract paid out over twice the time (e.g., if he had 5 years left at 2 million per year, he'd be owed 10 million over 10 years).

If there is a "lump sum" style buyout, it's likely a much lower figure than he would be due over the course of the contract. So, chances are that UM does not need to find the money right away. The buyout is a dumb excuse, but we shouldn't have been extending this clown till 2020 unless it was on extremely, extremely favorable terms anyway.

So what are we actually saving by keeping him around another year? The $2.3 mil or whatever he makes annually? You could raise that (if you absolutely had to produce it from an outside stream) by raising ticket prices the day you announce the new coach. Wouldn't even be $100 across the board to the supposed 30000 season ticket holders we claim to have.

And she's not retiring until May. A new coach would be in place for 4-5 months by then. People act like firing Golden would leave the new president with no employees in the athletic department.

People also act like the president is deeply involved in the search. Please. They sign off on it but a freakin' consulting firm almost always does the legwork in conjunction with BoT suggestions and the AD (at schools that have a real AD). If anything, Donna would almost being doing the new president a favor by handling it now as they could be absolved of responsibility if the new coach fails but would reap all the benefits if they win. The only person served professionally by passing the buck here is Donna.

That's why I thought it would make sense for Blake James, at least, to push for a firing. He'd look like an idiot if he has to fire the football coach during the prez's first year. On the other hand, if he gets a new corch, then he has a cushion with the new president.

Wouldn't the buyout be less next year though?
Not when you factor in having to pay his salary for 2015. Might as well cut your losses, pay him his buy out and move on. My guess, maybe there is a stipulation that before 2015 his buy out is a million dollars higher similar to Brady Hoke. If Michigan waits til January to fire him, his buyout decreases by $1 million. Fire him tomorrow and you have to pay him 3 or 4 million instead.

This is why I think it's coming. The only way it makes sense to keep him, if they got their eye on somebody for whatever reason won't be available until next offseason. Nobody has anything to gain by keeping Golden around. Not even Golden, he'll be in Brady Hoke territory next year-unhireable.
