Butch Davis and Manny Diaz shook hands after the
Florida International University (FIU) upset victory over the University of Miami on November 23, 2019.

At the time, Davis was the head coach for FIU, and Diaz was the head coach for Miami. The game was highly anticipated because Davis had previously been the head coach for the University of Miami, leading their program from 1995 to 2000. The handshake occurred after FIU defeated the favored Miami team with a score of 30-24 at Marlins Park, the site of the old Orange Bowl stadium.

At the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, Miami Hurricanes star defensive tackle Jerome Brown and his teammates famously wore camouflage fatigues to the pregame dinner, signaling their "mission" to take the national championship from Penn State, with Brown declaring, "Did the Japanese sit down with Pearl Harbor before they bombed them?". This controversial "fatigue game" stunt generated buzz, heightened the "battle for No. 1" narrative, and became an iconic moment of Miami's swagger before their eventual loss to Penn State, notes ESPN and The New York Times.

Key Details of the Incident:
  • The Event: The 1987 Fiesta Bowl, where #1 Miami faced #2 Penn State for the national title.
  • The Stunt: Miami players, led by Brown, arrived at the pregame dinner in military fatigues, treating the game like a war.
  • Jerome Brown's Quote: During a planned skit, Brown removed his warmup jacket to reveal fatigues and famously asked, "Did the Japanese sit down with Pearl Harbor before they bombed them?".
  • The Impact: It intensified the hype, with the team adopting a "war" mentality, but ultimately, Penn State won the game, 14-10.
  • Significance: The "fatigue game" remains a defining, often-discussed moment of the legendary Miami Hurricanes era and Brown's fiery personality.

Terry Porter, a field judge from the Big 12 Conference crew, throws a late flag for defensive pass interference on Miami cornerback Glenn Sharpe during a fourth-down play in the first overtime of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, played on January 3, 2003, where No. 2 Ohio State defeated No. 1 Miami 31–24 in double overtime.

The pass from Ohio State's Craig Krenzel to Chris Gamble fell incomplete, but Porter's penalty gave them a first down.

The call remains one of the most debated in college football history.

Debated my ***!

He cheated us outright - or he was crosseyed.

And he wasn't crosseyed.

That should be a capital offense.

They kept calling things so that OSU got about fifty plays on the goal line. My blood still boils over that night.

Bernard Clark makes a key interception and set up to go ahead touchdown right at the end of the first half against #1 Notre Dame, at the Orange bowl in the last game of the season 1989. Miami scored a few plays later and took a 17-10 lead in the halftime. The eventual win propelled Miami into a national title opportunity against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Miami won the bowl game and their third national championship in seven years.
