With a continuation of a 7 game losing streak becoming an all time series record (for either team) of 8 straight looming in the final minutes; Malik Rosier and Darrell Langham made the biggest play of their careers at Miami.

Rosier: who finished the game 19 of 44 for 254 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT; came up clutch in pivotal moments/3rd down conversions for the majority of the game, and especially in the final possession. Braxton Berrios was also paramount, routinely snagging contested catches or routing up DBs to keep drives alive. Darrell Langham, who came into the game as a backup after Ahmmon Richards went down with an injury; made the most out of his handful of snaps by securing the go ahead TD with 6 seconds left on the clock.

This would not be the last time Darrell Langham’s name would be called, as the moment was again not too big for him the following week: for another Cardiac Canes surviving moment in the game against Georgia Tech; capping off his first (and only) career 100 yard game with a massive 4th down conversion on a bobbled catch that he recovered as he fell onto the ground

Shout out to Darrell Langham, who was one of my favorite recruits at the time. I thought he was going to be a Tommy Streeter clone, and while that didn’t turn out to be the case; his impact on the 2017 season is enough to be memorialized into Hurricanes Lore IMO

The 2017 season is one of the most memorable seasons from start to finish in my life as a young/not super young fan. I was 9 years old when the Hurricanes won their last national championship. While I’m certainly not anything near a football guru, I certainly was even further away from that in 2001 lol. I understood “really big players, really fast players, really hard hitting players” and a **** of a lot of guys that I needed to trade for on my Vikings franchises in Madden 03 to Madden 05 (the best era of madden FWIW, Culpepper, paired with Edgerrin James and Santana Moss/Andre Johnson/Randy Moss…who needed draft picks lol) but anyways…

Headset Guy was 2002 when Xavier Bettia missed. Wide Left 1.

WR Xavier Restrepo passes Hurricane great WR Santana Moss as all-time career receiving yards leader with 2,573 on 2 Nov 24. He would finish his time wearing Orange and Green with 2,844 receiving yards.

📅 Game Overview —

#1 Miami Hurricanes vs. Boston College Eagles

Date: November 10, 2001

Location: Alumni Stadium, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts

Final Score: Miami 18, Boston College 7

Teams:
  • Miami Hurricanes (ranked #1) — 8-0 (5-0 Big East) entering the game
  • Boston College Eagles — 6-3 (3-2 Big East)

This game was one of the closest — and most pivotal — on Miami’s unbeaten path to the 2001 national championship.

🏈 Game Summary

🔹 First Half

  • Miami’s offense stalled early, but Todd Sievers kicked three field goals to give the Hurricanes a 9-0 halftime lead.
🔹 Third Quarter
  • Boston College struck first in the second half: Sean Ryan caught a 9-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 9-7.

🔹 Fourth Quarter — Climactic Finish
  • Miami added a 47-yard field goal from Sievers to make it 12-7 with just under a minute left.
  • With 13 seconds remaining, Boston College was threatening near the Miami 9-yard line when Matt Walters intercepted a pass and then Ed Reed wrestled the ball away from Walters and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown, sealing the game 18-7.

👉 This play has become legendary — sometimes described as Reed “yanking the ball from his teammate” and racing to the end zone — and was crucial in preserving Miami’s perfect season.

🧠 Importance in the National Title Season

Although this game was not part of the 2000 season, the victory was a key moment in Miami’s 2001 campaign that ultimately led to their fifth national championship. After finishing the regular season undefeated, Miami went on to defeat Nebraska 37-14 in the 2002 Rose Bowl, capturing the national title for the 2001 season — counted as the school’s 5th national championship.

🏆 Ed Reed’s Heroics

Ed Reed, one of Miami’s standout safeties and future Pro Football Hall of Famer, finished this season among Miami’s top defenders and was a key leader on defense. His interception return at Boston College was one of the signature plays of the season and helped maintain Miami’s undefeated run.

Wasn’t Headset Guy part of the Wide Left Game in 2002?

Wide Right Two was a missed last play field goal that would’ve tied the game, plus the Michael Barrow’s of attempted murder of Tamrick Vanover.
