The Mentality Of Our Recent Transfers

Of course a kid that transfers to a program is going to have less of a diva mindset/demeanor than a highly touted recruit but these types of recent attitudes going back to the Adrian Colbertsons have been quite refreshing.

Ambassador Colbertson still keeps repping us.

How quickly will this thread devolve into SoFla drama Kings vs. national brand respect?

Yup, I'm on the national brand respect bus. Been there for several years.

I think the allure and brand of the U still resonates with the national kids more so than So FL ballers. It will be apparent upon Diaz and staff to bring back the swagger and playing style that Miami was so well known for to have a better shot at kids locally. That, and winning games in that same fashion will only make their heads turn and seriously look at Miami as their destination of choice.

I believe the mindset of HS recruits and transfers are significantly different. HS kids are more easily swayed by BS, where older kids in the portal have some experience at determining 'what's up'. I think Miami is much more appealing to the kids who have seen other places.

Just a thought.

Grad transfers are coming to make money. Hill is in his money year just like Gerald and Adrian were. Put up or shut up. Guys like Phillips are coming to prove themselves. It’s a work ethic and urgency that most freshman don’t have. I love having hungry transfers on the team. They will push other guys and create a sense of let’s win now

I have a feeling Willis will be the same way too, dude is going to be an absolute beast and rep us any chance he gets.

Willis is an example of what can happen when talent matures and realizes changes need to be made. Most transfers go through that as well and that’s why they have a sense of urgency that Diaz keeps talking about.

Hill needs to work on his image and put out more great tape for scouts. I expect the kid to be dialed in from day 1.

The U has been fortunate to sign transfers with adversity in their background. Some from injury, others from plain humility. The experience matured them. They learned if they want to eat they have to work and earn their seat at the dinner table. High schools kids coddled and praised since youth football believe their entitled. Not all high school recruits, of course.

I suspect our old guys from the school 80’s came from more adversity than today So Fl kids. I remember Playmaker saying he was happy to just have 3 squares a day. Albert Bentley rode bike-cycle to school, and everyone knows Ray showed up with just one pair of jeans. While the hoods might still be ruff, I am not sure the kids are the same fire cured.

You’re right. I’m not from South Florida so I cannot compare the Miami culture of the 80s, 90s, and today.

Cable TV was in its infancy and no internet. Now you have 24/7 news cycles and sports, and some kids tweeting how great they are. And, to be fair, some how blessed and grateful they are.

I agree with this 100%.

It is different. Seems the kids back in the day, like Ray, May not have been able to have an IPhone etc.

Sfla kids are spoiled and don't realize there's a big difference stepping on a hs field to stepping on a div 1 field.we need a howard,jj,butch type of coach.a coach who knows what needs to be done to prepare these kids for that environment.coker, shannon, golden and right both took the wrong approach and it showed on Saturday.Manny gets it with the savagery going after assistants, using the portal and messing with Willie at the coaches seminar.plus telling some players that it's not working out here for them.he's basically putting everyone on notice either do it or hit the highway.

I love the tough love approach by Diaz and the rest of the coaching staff. Accountability is key, particularly on the football field and in the classroom. Another thing I liked that Manolo stated was that the locker room has to police itself; the coaches aren’t allowed to be around enough for more than 15 practices before Fall camp. That’s an awfully long amount of time for kids with attention spans of gnats these days to have by themselves, working on their craft themselves. It’s apparent upon the locker room to have a few alpha dogs that will see the coaching staff’s vision and bring it to light for the rest of the team. That includes showing by example and if need be, getting on others to shape up, or ship out.
