Isn't this out of the school's hands? If the rule is allowing a player to go out and market himself separately from the University, it would seem that the tax burden falls on the player.

Of course it does, however, the "smart" schools will bring in somebody to help them manage their income while on scholarship at their respective university. You have received this income BECAUSE you play for Miami. Universities should offer that up while these kids are on scholarship. Coaches need to know that their players are following IRS reporting requirements to keep them from getting into a situation that keeps them off the field.

Miami probably doesn't have much of an issue now as there truly aren't very many marketable kids on that roster currently. At least none that would drive a business to pay them, over one of the better known professional athletes in the area.
 
I'd imagine the great players coming out of HS won't be so quick to take bags if they know they can make it on their own. Just maybe a few of the SF kids will stay home. Wishful thinking anyway!

the average fan doesnt give a **** bout hs recruits down here. theyre better off in a college town where theyre more known

miami hs stadiums are tiny compared to say, texas. the average fan isnt going to that game though. the average fan doesnt know a single player on this UM team right now (to the point where a big business is gonna spend money on a college player for advertising deals). the only businesses i can see doing this are caneswear, all canes, and other UM specific stores. we dont have a big time player that will help businesses expand sales.

obviously, a UM degree is better than a bama degree (unless you plan on living in bama), but a bama law degree is better by the rankings.
 
It will only make Miami more competitive In recruiting actually. EVERY school has boosters and the cap limit of only signing 25 guys for each recruiting calendar year is good as well. Most of the big name schools are already getting majority of the top talent , so now with this it will even out a bit with hopefully the NCAA off the back of Miami so that our boosters can do what these other schools do regularly and still be in compliance

If we get major corporations and local businesses paying players lucratively for their likeness, cherry picking south Florida and other major markets will get much more difficult.

@RVACane u know what’s crazy my bird is from Miami lol.......I traced her bracelet and that’s where she was from and I found that out after I got her. It was meant to be lol.......also she learns anything I say in two weeks so I should teach her to say fire Diaz or fuq the Diaz brothers.

Agreed. They’re all about capitalism until certain people join the club.
 
Kids today care about their “brand”, no matter how delusional it may seem to us.

If this thing materializes as expected, it’s got to be a net positive for UM.

But right now there are too many unknowns for anyone to be certain.
 
With Instagram everyone can make some extra cash. Jimmy Murphy after being on Sportscenter could do a post for Smoothie King or Sergios. The players are always showing off on game day FashionNova will send them some clothes and a check. It's not just football players either FSU has a female soccer player that has 1.5 million followers, with that following she can expect 50k per advertisement.
