The D should improve and here's why

One of this years freshman LB trio will be the one to step up. They were recruited for Mannys scheme so it makes sense.

We have no consistency in our running game to convert 3rd downs and erratic QB play/protection. Get the 3rd down conversions up to keep the defense off the field and they will play better.
 
If our preseason rating improves then there will be reason for it, and the major components will improve, enabling it to happen.

I always have to laugh at so much wasted time on specifics and subjectivity, when a logical big picture overview completely dominates that crap.
 
Our defense won’t improve unless the linebackers step up. I dont Know why it happened but I thought they were the worst position group on defense for the season overall. We need that edge back

Not every coordinator is elite at their job. You are asking why as if Manny doesnt have a history of getting carved up. Its not like this is some out of the ordinary result for this scheme.

Irony is FSU hired a guy that runs the defense we all wish we were running, while we have a Chuck Amato disciple running our D.

I was asking why, as just like, why? Your answer indicates you think its the schematics of our zone D, thus on manny, correct? Not disagreeing, I truly want to know what makes his zone D suck. What elements?

A "great" DC like radio, for example, has no genius scheme, he runs the same cover 2, and its as good as its players. Are you saying manny's zone D, HIS SCHEME, is wanting? I'd like to know how. Serious, not sarcastic, I really know not why.

Our biggest weakness IMO is our inability to defend the middle of the field. Offenses have the most success when they attack our LB's and Safeties. If you go back and watch the Wisconsin game you'll notice that every time they needed a long 3rd down conversion they simply attacked the zone behind our LB's.

Well when your LB's are just standing there starring at the QB and not re-routing WR's it puts stress on your Safeties, makes them have to cover more ground. Then there's a nice little soft spot in our zone right behind the LB's. Easy completion.

Our LB's never get adequate depth in pass coverage, that's why they seldom make plays against the pass.

Our Safeties also play too **** loose for my liking. Wisconsin had their Safeties 10 yards off. We had our Safeties at 12+.

I understand we were great at producing TO's, Sacks and TFL's...but any DC who employs an aggressive 1-gap scheme will produce TFL's and Sacks at Miami. We have athletes up front. So I don't put too much stock in those stats. If anything, it's reflective of Kul's coaching not Manny's scheme.

I'd trade some of those stats for a better 3rd down percentage and not allowing mediocre QB's to carve up the middle of our defense.

We didn't get any better at covering the middle of the field from 2016 to 2017 so please help me understand why we would be any better in 2018.

I just don't see it. I've said it before, as long as our LB's/DB's continue to stare at the QB during pass plays then we will struggle to defend the intermediate/middle of the field.

I am no Xs and Os guy but isnt the majority of our Defensive schemes heavily dependent on pressure and/or a pass rush? Seems like our D started becoming average as the year went on because our pass rush wasnt as dominating as it was at the beginning and middle of the year. And Diaz didnt adjust. I could be wrong.

No, you're not wrong. However, I think some of the OC's we saw countered our pass rush with a quick passing game, which has been a thorn in our side all season. A quick/short passing game negates an elite pass rush, and we struggled to cover those routes.

We didn't exactly look great in man the last 3 to 4 games. Our current set of corners were exposed.

Unless I'm wrong it looks like we don't pattern read with our linebackers. They look like they are spot dropping which to me is insane especially against spread teams.

Really ashame because our secondary gets drastically better with the addition of 2018 kids. Campbell commits and he starts. I saw enough in the Army game to tell he is the goods. Losing McIntosh and Norton to a lesser extend really hurts on throwing downs.

Yeah, they just stand there and stare at the QB most of the time, which prevents them from getting adequate depth in their drop.

They have no idea that WR's are running right behind them cause they're not getting their eyes to the receivers. That's why you can complete short/intermediate throws right next to (or behind) our LB's all day.

Somebody needs to light a fire under them this offseason. Maybe the expectations were too high for the lb group but I and I’m sure others expected more from them
 
The secondary will be a lot better. Should be one of the best in the nation. Best guys are all back. Delaney not a big loss. Incoming freshman should add some much needed explosiveness.

Linebackers need to lose weight. I don't care if they're undersized, they need to be flying all over the place phucking schitt up.

The defensive line is the wild card and it's the most important position group by far. Sucks that the 2 outgoing DT's share a brain, Norton should have come back. Willis, Joe Jack, and Garvin all have explosive upside, a lot riding on them. Djack and Bethel are going to be solid. Ford and Patchan are wild cards. Both have a lot of ability. Nesta is a must sign and they need to add some other freshman who are ready to make plays day 1.
 
The depth is still worrisome. Not only at Dline but also LBs, you hope Charles Perry can come back healthy but I don’t have confidence in the LBs we recruited. Other than Patrick Joyner who I think is going be a stud, the others just aren’t up to par imo.

Kid was an animal against the run. Not sure Djax can match that but have my hopes that he comes back healthy and makes an impact.
 
Our DT play will really dictate how good our defense is next year. At least, in my opinion, that's always where it starts on defense.

We really need to find a high quality JUCO DT to start next to Willis next year (in addition to getting Silvera and Briggs). I don't know if that's possible this late in the game, but we'll see. Miami has picked up high quality players late in the recruiting cycle before (like Thomas last year).

Silvera sounds like he could be a difference maker for us down the road and log minutes next year, but I don't think it's a good idea to have to rely on a true freshman in the middle of our defense.

We'll see.
 
Not considered about the defense as much as the offense. Our D has been good, but not great. Our O was absolutely horrible and struggled moving the football. I was more excited watching the defense play than our offense bc at least they balled out with the turnover chain.

You guys obsessed with the defense, should start looking on the offensive side of our team to see where the main problems come from. You can’t be world beaters on defense when our offense consistently goes 3 and out.
