1. All major contributors for our secondary come back. Combine that with the new blood we already have signed (and possibly might have coming) and that improves.

2. Speaking of our linebackers... this is the year that we've been waiting for ever since Mark started 3 true frosh at LB. Some have made the argument that this unit had a sophomore slump. Whatever. Bye bye 2017. I believe we will see that unit take a major step forward as clear leaders and the heart of the defense. Linebacker improves.

3. I hate losing Chad, as he was not only a steady performer but also a leader!. He wasn't, however, a huge difference maker. This is meant no disrespect to him and I really believe that he could blossom in the pros in a way that he didn't here. But, teams were never terrified that they were facing #9 . That being said, with JJ, Jack and Garvon returning and all three being trained by Kool from day one, I expect more performance out of the DE position. Overall, I think we'll see more speed, and sudden violence from that group, the kind of which we haven't seen since probably 2001. We need more depth, but help is on the way. This improves.

4. It sucks to lose our starting DT's. I wish them well, but I also believe it is a mistake for them to leave early. With the rest of the D being older, in better condition and fully trained and ensconced in our D system plus Kool's tutelage, they could have really shone brightly. Having said that, if we sign Nesta and a couple others, I have a feeling that the net result will feel like our D is just fine and hopefully dominant.

I have hopes and doubts about Willis and whether he's a Greentree allstar, but, if he truly does play like they say he's played in practices this season, and Ford really does devote himself to S&C and Kool's training, and Bethel takes a step forward, we will be fine. Would we be better if 80 and 7 stayed? Of course! But, if everyone else comes to together, the net result will be that we are no worse off. Having Nesta sign with us and be special in his Frosh year, which he totally has the capacity to do, would aid in this.

5. Final thought - our ferocious D of 1991. We had an amazing Secondary. We had junior linebackers who has played together since they were frosh and could almost read each other's minds. We had fast DE's like Rusty, Darren, Kevin, etc. But, can you easily rattle off our 4 deep at DT that year? Obviously some of you can, but my point is - that particular D (unlike the 89' D which had two NFL all pros as our starters) performed without AA's at the position.

That 91' D was absolutely fast and light absorbingly suffocating, and they did this with good and adequate DT play, but not incredible DT play. The heart of that team was in it's back 7 and was supported by its DE's.

Our 2018 D has an opportunity to reflect the 91' D. Optimistically, next year's crew actually has the potential to get better DT play than 91'.

Not saying they will be as good as the 91' version, but I do believe they can be effective. And, if either Kosi or Jarren can take the reins, the 2018 Offense has more offensive firepower, IMO, at the skill positions.

Let's hope. I think with another year in the system and a better secondary we could absolutely be better on defense. People bash Manny for his schemes towards the end of the year but many times players didn't communicate or filled the wrong gaps. In the bowl game alone, we had players in position all night long and they simply didn't make the plays. On every one of their TD passes we had a DB within arms reach of making the play but they either didn't turn to locate the ball or did so and just missed tipping/intercepting the ball. And to make matters worse I believe 3 of the 4 TD passes were on 3rd and long. We just have to be stronger and execute much better and I think we could improve a lot.

Disagree about chad . He was our most consistent performer in the last 2 games along the dline and it wasn’t close really

Sad fact: ain’t gonna happen because Manny Diaz is our DC

He’s been a subpar to mediocre DC his entire career, and even though many cane fans want to believe things will be different with Miami talent, history is always our best teacher.

He is who we thought he was (Denny green voice)

I really do believe that one or two players will step up next year that no one here really expects. I have no idea who but it will happen.

Sort of like how this past season a guy like Mike Jackson stepped up in the secondary and made many big plays for us. If anyone here says that they expected him to break out in 2017 back in January of last year you are lying through your teeth and should just be banned from the site. I don't remember anyone at this time last year saying he would step up and fill in for the loss of Corn.

We have to trust that the next men up are prepared to show what they can do. We also must trust the process and that the coaching will take us in the right direction.

Ditto. I hope he proves us wrong but statistically we will finish around 50 in team defense, excluding TOs sacks and TFL. Our 3rd down Defense will continue to suck thanks to Manny

The secondary will clearly be the strength of the defense next year. I can foresee a ton of cover sacks as a result. With the linebackers being a strong unit next year as well, that should definitely help in the run game as long as they improve with gap integrity.

In essence, this year we depended on our d-line to make up for some deficiencies in the back seven. Next year, it will be the direct opposite.

The two outside lbs on that team ran like 4.3 40s. Do we have one player that fast now? I love our three kids but that group was special. I’ll take half that good this year.

All I see right now is curl and slants over the middle still gashing is

When we can stop a decent qb I will feel better about Manny

Losing 2 quality DTs and serviceable LB only hurts

If Nesta and another kid was coming in at the Jan term I would feel different

good post, this jaded/troll crew on this site are on the edge of their seats waiting for this train to revert back to shytsville but it aint happening regardless of who stays or goes

I’ll add, that Shaq does compare with Mike, no disrespect to the man who gave us The Hit on Vanover. Also, those DTs were not quite Miami level,, but with Steve in the one back and a Heisman QB, the offense made up for it. Wasn’t The Rock on that team?

You probably didn't notice Toolbox Trent?
He was in beastmode!!!

Honestly believe Trent is the guy we're going to miss the most on Defense.

I'm skeptical on the Defense overall. Still not sold on Diaz. Outside of the Notre Dame game, it didn't seem like we imposed our will on anybody we played. He definitely needs to tighten up.

He said that Chad was the most consistent. He said Chad wasnt a difference maker or a player that DCs had to gameplan for..and hes right.

Great 1991 reference, OP. Mark Ceasar was our best DT on that Defense. LOL. Let that sink in. You have given me hope for the D this year with that comparison because it is **** sure spot on.

And anyone who went into the 1991 season knowing that Smith-Barrow-Armstead would dominate the way they did are lying to themselves. Armstead didnt even start the year before. And that 1991 secondary reminds me alot of the secondary we have coming back this year. Big time Safety. (Daryl Williams - Jaquan Johnson) and a big time DB (Ryan McNeil - Michael Jackson) and some nice pieces around them to compliment. (Hurlie Brown, Herbert James - Malik Young, Trajan Bandy, Jhavonte Dean)

Heres hoping you are right.

our defense will remain mediocre until we fix the zone defense. Its awful, holes everywhere which is why qb's get so many easy completions against us.
